As the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm celebrates its third anniversary this year, the group has decided to assist three students whose families have been affected by cancer.
The students are Andrel Alfred attending the Dominica Grammar School, Jamael Christopher who will attend the Goodwill Primary and Nathaniel Joseph who will attend the St Mary’s Primary.
Each student was presented with $500 at a special ceremony held at the Wellness Centre Cancer House in Goodwill on Wednesday.
This donation will be used to assist students during the new academic year 2016-2017.
Over the years the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm has hosted bake sales accompanied by one food sale to raise monies to assist and this year a total of $2,100 was raised.
“This year is a special year because it marks the third anniversary of the group, and in this regard we felt that it was absolutely necessary to issue three scholarships to three students, hence the Youth Arm went out and beyond to ensure that this goal was achieved,” President of the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm, N’Aaliyah Jno. Baptiste she said while addressing the presentation ceremony. “Today we stand proud to deliver these three students and make a special appeal to other students from various schools across the island to join a youth group, more specifically join the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm because you can make a difference in the lives of your pairs.”
According to her, nowadays one never know who will be affected by cancer; “hence we, the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm, are here to support our peers to make their lives just a tad bit easier.”
“We stand firm on our motto: Being Cancer Free Brings Joy to you and Me, Youth in the Fight Against Cancer,” Jno Baptiste stated.
The Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm was formed on October 2013 at the Convent High School. It is a group of individuals who understand the seriousness of cancer and the devastation it causes not only to the victim, but the people around them who face financial and emotional distress.
The aim of the group is to educate pairs about cancer through various programmes to build cancer awareness and advocate on behalf of the person touched by cancer and to support children affected by cancer.
The youth arm will also give two full scholarships to two students who will be promoted to 5th form to assist in their CXC expenses.
The group also recognized Marlyn Phillip who has devoted her products to the cause and assisted during the bake sales.
Kudos. Well done youth arm.
