PRESS RELEASE – A Reading Room was opened at the Trafalgar Primary School on Tuesday, 18th May 2010.
This Reading Room Project came into being as an attempt to improve the literacy level of some of our students and to encourage the good readers to continue to develop in Reading. It is in addition to the School Library, Class Libraries and what is already being done for the improvement of reading at the Trafalgar Primary School.
The room was designed by Ms. Corine George at eacher at the school , with the assistance of the Principal – Mrs. Doreen Watt, other staff members, students, parents and well-wishers. It has a listening centrer an area for students to use the computer, display shelves for the books, a reading center for the smaller students and another reading area for the bigger students. There is also a white board and a flip chart in the room. Storage cupboards also form part of the room.
The whole floor was carpeted and a rug was placed so that some students can make themselves quite comfortable reading on the floor. Drawings and captions were placed on the walls and the vivid colours specially chosen to stimulate the students to be eager to come in to read.
Mr. Nicholas Goldberg, Senior Education Officer, speaking at the Opening Ceremony congratulated the school on this initiative and stated that: 1) Reading is here to stay. 2) Reading is used in everyday life. 3) Children need to be taught that letters have sounds. 4) They also need to know that sounds and speech make up words. 5) They need to be taught how to put the sounds together to make words. 6) Schools need to provide a good learning environment. 6)Teachers should use teaching aids and make the walls in their classrooms attractive. 7) Students’ works should be put on display in classrooms.
Mrs. Nazarine Titre, Education Officer South, spoke on ‘The Benefits of Reading’. Pastor Maurice Morancie dedicated the room.
anyway Dominicans are so easily swaggered. do u all know the kind of person Corine George is? when we sit and we praise people for other peoples work, thats really bad. Most of this work was done by Mrs. Watt. the same principal the said teacer doesnt even like. So when u people sit and and praise this girl get some background information first.
Thanks so much for this contribution. When I went to school there we did not have a reading room. I know that they will appreciate it.great job. Read more
Excellent work!!! Congratulations to Ms. George, the Principal, staff and students of the Trafalgar School. Reading is fundamental to education and it’s good to see the young ones being given the ncessary resources to sharpen their skills. ALL THE BEST!
From the looks of this room, very interesting. Good going Miss George , your are an inspiration to most of the students there, keep up the good work and i hope the parents appreciates this worthwhile effort and play a greater part in assisting their children to read at home as well.

Well done corine I know you transfer all yr energy into this project. hope this is a stepping stone for much more for the school. Students, teachers please appreciate and make use of this reading room. We all know our students need this. Hope to see more for the next school year. GOD BLESS YOU – MISS GEORGE
thumbs up to the teacher, students and parents. one thing though, parents do not depend on the school to do it all; play your part at home with your children. read to them and vice versa. have a story telling time even if it’s for just five minutes. it will go a long way.
You go Corine…proud of you and what you are doing for the school with the assistance of everyone. I hope that the students appreciate this venture and make the most of it.
This is a n exccellent initiative. Good work Corine, administration and other staff members of the school! I hope that teachers like Corine are encouraged and supported by the Ministry of Education to get the necessary qualification to further enhance this initiative. This is the type of teacher who should be selected to become a reading specialist at her school; that is ,if she is so inclined. I hope this room will also be used to do reading intervention-help the slow ones to catch up so that they to will be eager to come to the reading room on their own.
