Twelve students, who will begin pursuing their secondary school education in September, are now recipients of the National Cooperative Credit Union (NCCU) scholarship.

Janae Rabess of Canefield received the NCCU Ltd Merit scholarship, while Soyinka Corriette of Bath Estate and Tanisha Nicholas of Tarish Pit were awarded the Hudson Savarin Scholarship.

Dejohn Shillingford of Bellevue Chopin, Josiah Dejean of Morne Prosper, Jaden Laville of Pichelin, Tabitha Durand of Trafalger and Jaheim Prince of Trafalgar are now holders of the Edward Elwin Scholarship.

Kern Davin Cadette of Morne Jaune was presented with the Ambrose Cuffy Memorial Scholarship, Travis Massicot of Paix Bouche received the Vernice Bellony Scholarship, Tyrese Jno Baptiste of Soufriere was awarded with the Marie Wilkins Scholarshop and Jemimah Mills of Mahaut was presented with the Shand Jolly Merit Scholarship.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony on Friday morning President of the NCCU, Michael Augustine, pointed out that there are presently 56 scholarship holders across the island.

“We are constantly bombarded today with information about children in trouble but it is young men and women such as those I see here today who give us lasting hope for the future,” he said. “Over the past four years the NCCU has awarded over $300,000 in scholarship to students all over Dominica an average of $82,000 per academic year.”

Augustine added that three partial scholarships are also awarded to students who wish to attend the Dominica State College.

“Helping these deserving young men and women is one of the most important things that the NCCU does and it is in line with two of our seven cooperative principles which are education, training and information, and concern for the community,” he noted. “The NCCU believes strongly in the personal literacy of our young leaders.”

He added that the organization will continue to remain committed to assisting the students to succeed.

In the meantime, Jemima Mills the recipient of the Shand Jolly Scholarship thanked the NCCU for allowing her to fulfill her lifelong dream of attending the Convent High School.

“I am most honored to be the recipient of the Shand Jolly Merit Scholarship, your generous support is helping me to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending the Convent High School,” she stated. “Growing up in a single parent home where my mom had to work very hard to make ends meet has made me realize the value of taking my education seriously.”

Mills noted that she will ensure to do her very best at high school.

Chief Executive Officer of the NCCU, Aylemer Irish, encouraged the students to continue striving for the best by studying hard and getting good grades.

Congratulations on your achievement. It is good that you can say thank you publicly, but you are going to high school now, therefore you should know by now that the letter ‘I’ when used as a pronoun, should always be capitalized. There are also a few errors in your statement, please go through it, and make the necessary corrections to yourself. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your response to Jemima’s comments.

I too noticed a few spelling mistakes, and wanted to suggest that Jemima might want to invest in a dictionary.

I hope this is viewed as constructive criticism.

Well done to all the recipients

We are all proud of you Jemima. Work hard and do not forget where you come from. Use that as motivation to reach to the sky. Most of all, do not forget what you have already learnt; no short cuts, please. Be a shining example and make your former teachers and your parents proud.

Thank you NCCU; keep up the good work!
