The Chinese Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has awarded twelve students with scholarships to pursue university level education at some of the top universities in China.

The award ceremony was held at the Fort Young Hotel on Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 where a special appearance was made by President of Dominica, Charles Savarin and his wife, Mrs. Savarin.

The scholarship includes coverage for tuition and medical insurance.

The students are Nikacey Jno-Finn who will pursue Clinical Medicine; Kerchel Fan Fan – Biotechnology; Danila Paul – Financial Management; Daniel Scotland – Clinical Medicine; Bobb Jenkins – Information and Computer Science and Daron Lloyd – Electronic and Information Engineering. Other scholarship recipients are Ghandi Matthew who will study Civil Engineering; Nahim Brumant – Architecture; Curtley Darroux – Telecommunications Engineering; Karhmalee Severin – Clinical Medicine; Bertrand Swain – Environmental Science and Engineering and Kathlyn Paul – International Relations and Diplomacy.

Saint Jean

Minister for Education, Petter Saint Jean, said that the awardees must count themselves as privileged as this opportunity is still a dream for many other young Dominicans who were not given this stepping stone.

“We are on the way to realizing a modern, prosperous Dominica, and the twelve awardees here this afternoon must see yourselves as privileged to be a vital part of the human resources on which this new Dominica is being built. For you the students receiving this award today, I say that I know you are filled with emotions, excited that you are going out abroad to study, you are finally going to China…but for you, what is actual reality is still a dream for many young Dominicans,” Saint Jean stated.

One of the recipients, Curtley Darroux, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to study abroad, and although it will be a culture shock, he said he is willing and ready to take the challenges head on.

“I am indeed grateful for this opportunity, in obtaining the scholarship to pursue studies in the People’s Republic of China. To me, it’s a complete change of environment, (a) different culture which I may have to adapt to. Saying it will be an easy task, is another statement, but with the commitment and determination and all the support I’m getting, I think that I will overcome these obstacles, and am confident that I will make my myself, my family and my country on a whole, proud,” Darroux said.

Darroux hopes to become an engineer in his field and hopes to implement the skills attained at university into his home country for the development of the telecommunications sector.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well I want to congratulate all the students who receive a scholarship because I believe in higher education. Now when I look at the names I recognize ten names where their parent or relative are current members of the current administration. It makes me wonder if they received their scholarship base on education qualification or family political Affliation .

Tony it seems you are the one who gave the parents the membership cards . Lennox grab two and you made so many excuses. Give these scholars a chance, their grades speak, their school records over the years speaks.

While noble, how many of them will return home? Will the elders who still control Dominica, listen to innovative ideas when they return. That is the challenge for developing nations like Dominica.

Wow look jalousy. These kids will be leaders because they all have high grades. You salty people will still remain basic with minimum wage while they will move on the greater things. CONGRATULATIONS YOUNG PEOPLE! don’t be distracted by these losers. Soon the same UWP losers will be boasting the Chinese scholarships, you see Lennox already in China begging, just wait soon he will be singing all hail to china and step on the Taiwanese flag. Fight for politicians still and don’t develop yourselves. While they will be changing their tongue for money you will be still salty.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well shouldn’t it concern you that Ten of the twelve students have family connection to this current administration. Regardless of political Affliation our citizens should receive scholarships based on their education qualification. I hope the Government have them sign a contracts guaranteeing that they return to Dominica and work for at lease five years for the Government to satisfy their scholarship.

O.K seem nice for the students, but lets hope it’s Peking, Tsinghua, Fudan, or University of science and technology of china, they are going too, not some substandard school. And also maybe they should give some money to other students to pay for American university, After all if china president XI Jinping daughter, drops out of their own country university, and move to america to attend harvard university, why are our student, have to go to china. Dam things must not so good there, Yea there is something strange about this chinese communist, who love to sent the children to capitalist american schools, and the expensive one too  Or i forgot, president XI also resided in America. And I know the “Evil DR Supremo” son who just graduate high school, is not going to any chinese university this year

Sit in Atkinson and talk **** and go on internet to look up name of Chinese universities. Meanwhile the students will be better of than you in a few years. They don’t need Harvard and the president child dropping out has nothing to do with their success because they don’t think of other people’s business they are focused and thinking of their own success and opportunity to make use of free school under good conditions. Btw rich people in the states are sending their kids to china to. its exchange, the next level people go to countries with different language and culture than what they are used to so they can have the best of both worlds. Stay on DNO still losers and complain in a few hears these doctors, engineers, scientist etc will be sipping champaign while you will be still on DNO with a computer you still owing courts for. Bye felicia

What foolishness. Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton studied in the UK. Do you think that means the Clintons believe there’s something wrong with U.S. higher education, or did they simply want to broaden their horizons, as these young Dominican students will be doing in China?

Primrose when UWP was there I heard the same things for students going to Cuba, the same Cuba the UWP called Rosie communist for. Stop making noise for politicians they are all the same just check out Lenny in china today, a place he despised and called Skerrit communist for. Those who forget the past are deemed to repeat it.

Wow…her mother have a big block house so she should not be eligible for scholarship. You really something. The block house must be paying for with sand oye. Do you have children? If you do, were you able to send them to school, help and support them as much as you could to make them at least have the pre-requisites to apply for a scholarship? Education is not cheap and you don’t know if these parents eating their lapo bodah to send their children to school. So unless you have been there shut your mouth.

Not everyone will be successful and I’m sure there are fields which take priority over others. Did you notice the fields the children gonna be studying? Most of them were either medicinal or technical. So if these were among the top fields being considered by the government, then that’s what it is. We have too many business and accounting students and not enough technical. We need to stop importing human resource. Use your head man shate. Not everything is political.

DA girl you know damn well it’s true. All these young people are children of known DLP supporters, and this seems to be the main criteria for a young person to get a scholarship to go study. I see one in particular who left school just recently, didn’t even complete college but that student received a scholarship, yet I know of students with a college diploma who’ve been applying for years, to no avail, they have the abilities and don’t have means, but because their families are not “red” enough they will never qualify. So no, I won’t congratulate this bunch; not the students’ fault, but this stinks of nepotism and cronyism.

Primrose stop hating, the person child has more knowledge in her little finger than you have in your big head and she can speak mandarin. The university require High School diploma and they will still go over what we do here in “college” so your friends with their “college diploma” still have to go over it again. You well know your friends “college diploma” not worth much with the watered down version they got here. Leave people children alone they all have better grades than most “college diplomas’ here and their courses not business administration and document processing, check their majors. These are the leaders of tomorrow the country needs. You can hold your congratulations they don’t need it to focus.

“hopes to implement the skills attained at university into his home country for the development of the telecommunications sector.” Good idea but…. I have approximately 4 friends I can think of on the sport that has been in China going on 7-8 years now. There should be a way to ensure that the young people return to aid dominca
