Sidney Jules awarded by US Embassy for excellence in CXC

Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Bridgetown D.R Seckinger presents Jules with plaque award

Sidney Jules receives award from US Embassy in Bridgetown officer D.R Seckinger this morning at brief ceremony at his alma mater St. Mary’s Academy (SMA)

An award of $500 USD, a plaque and a certificate will be presented to Sidney J.M. Jules who gained nine passes at Grade One, general proficiency in the 2009 CXC examinations.

The award was as part of a collaboration between the Embassy of the United States of America and the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) which are rewarding students with the most outstanding CXC results in the seven Eastern Caribbean island nations to which the Embassy is accredited.

According to a press release, previously the Embassy and the Caribbean Examinations Council discussed how best they could encourage and honor excellence in education. The Embassy and CXC eventually came up with the U.S. Embassy CXC National Awards for Outstanding Performance.  Top students in 2009 Brittany Evason of Barbados, Gregory Tuayev-Deane of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Lena Taupier of St. Lucia, Arlene Hayes of Grenada,  and Zoe Gonsalves of St. Kitts/Nevis have already received their prizes.   Prizes will shortly be awarded to Ariel Maynard of Antigua. The student’s secondary schools will receive a set of 50 American literature books.

    Go forth young man…

Congratulations. Immerse yourself in all the academic opportunities presented to you. The path is not always smooth, but with resiliency, hardwork, dedication, and discipline, opportunities will be abound. Do not be distracted by detractors. Let the detractors serve as a catalyst for your success.

Here is a poem, by Williams Henley, you should read when the journey becomes burdensome. It is one of my favorites.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul

    Congratulation Sidney!

This goes to show that the young men at your level can attain commendable level of academic excellence. Coming from an all boys institution makes it a greater cause for celebration. I am happy that you efforts paid off.
It is very interesting and lamentable at the same time to point out that your name was batantly omitted from the list of awardies during the youth rally in October. Not one person saw it fit to highlight your achievement and use you as spring board to encourage the other young men who society is so often quick to judge ….
You blessings can never be taken away from you. Continue to bloom where ever you are planted
