Students of various secondary schools in Dominica were given a first-hand opportunity on Monday to experience the University of the West Indies (UWI) at an open house event hosted by the UWI Open Campus.

Representatives of the four campuses namely St Augustine, Mona, Cavehill and the Open Campus sites made themselves available for questions by the students.

Speaking to reporters, Kris Liburd, President of UWI Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) Cavehill chapter said the university is currently on a recruitment drive and is trying to encourage people to think about pursuing degrees with the institution.

“The University of the West Indies is a regional entity meaning that it is a university created for Caribbean people by Caribbean people and we really want people to capitalize on the opportunities that can be had from being students at the University of the West Indies and even after graduation,” he said.

According to him the open house is one of the university’s methods of giving the students some insight as to what to expect at the various campuses of UWI in terms of the scholarship opportunities, academics, and co-curricular activities offered by the University.

Liburd added that the University is diverse and embraces both its regional and international students.

Meantime, Nigel Bradshaw Student Recruitment Officer of the St Augustine Campus, added that the University’s Caribbean nature makes it different and causes it to stand out amongst other universities.

“Our Caribbean nature is so unique and sought after by International students. Students want to come to us because of a number of things for one they have seen our excellence, they have seen our capability of being able to put persons on peddle stools that allow for global recognition. The University of the West Indies has a very global sense. “

Bradshaw added that the university is known for creating global citizens with Caribbean foundations.

The UWI open house will continue tomorrow for members of the public wishing to pursue degrees with the university.

Very nice. Stay in School young people, stay in School! You are our future. Our Doctors, our Lawyers, our Teachers, our Prime Ministers, our Fishermen, our Farmers, our nurses, our bus drivers etc. We rely on you all. God bless the School teachers. Skerritt, the Teachers need a raise! for God sake. I saw a Teacher the other day who didn’t have bus fare. Come on!
