Youth Officer, Matilda Popo, has said young people are taking full responsibility of matters pertaining to their affairs and are also empowered in the process.

According to her the National Youth Council of Dominica (NYC) through its action is motivating the young people to do better in their quest for development and they need to be complemented.

She was speaking at the 10 th Annual National Youth Awards ceremony held at the Dominica State College (DSC) Auditorium on last weekend.

“Tonight’s function demonstrates that youth are positive and they play a critical role in the development of the country and must be given all the support needed so that they can continue to demonstrate their true potential,” Popo stated.

She mentioned that when youth are focused many great things happen.

“When youth are together greater things happen,” Popo noted. “Therefore I am sending a special message to the young people of Dominica to continue supporting your peers, work as a team because there is strength in team work.”

She advises young people to remember that their achievement did not occur in isolation.

“Your mentors, your parents, friends and well wishers have encouraged you to reach this milestone. Please remember to extend gratitude to them,” she noted.

Popo told young people to continue to recognize that they are powerful and can achieve great things.

“Even if you do not get the praise that you are expecting when you do well, give yourself a tap on the shoulder and continue to do that on a daily bases,” she remarked. “This will definitely assist you in reaching that desired goal. Remember that no one can hold you down or limit you, you are the only one who can limit yourself.”

She called on all corporate citizens, including the non-governmental organization, the private sector, parents and well wishers to recognize the work of the NYCD and where possible give your support to it.

I need to compliment Mrs Popo for her great speech to the young people. I know Popo for a long time and she is a true motivator, she always encourages the youth and I am speaking from experience. Young people really need that level of encouragement and I believe that Mrs. Popo did just that. I want to support Popo by calling on all corporate citizens to play their part and support the young people so that we can have a beautiful Dominica.

Sorry but I always feel uncomfortable when faced with fake Africans, holding forth on social responsibilities. It just makes me feel uneasy that is all. It does not help that that youth oganisation is headed by a Govt.Minister who is a follower of left wing ideology. I would like to know who funds the budget for this youth organisation that reminds me so much of the Communist Youth League of China. Only the red scarf is missing. Be up front and tell us who finances you!

      Hello,Titiwi,
Please think before you talk. Please contribute in a positive way. This is not a fake African, in my humble opinion, this lady is a true African. She loves what she does and do it with a passion. I am a testimony of her work. She loves to see young people develop in a holistic manner. Keep on doing what you love to do Mrs Popo, my african. I believe you need to extend your work to the wider nation. You are really a motivator. Dominica needs more like you.

The youths are the future adult citizens. D/ca needs them to help enhance it. One day they will take their rightful places in the D/can society. Those who especially excel deserve to be complimented and to be encouraged.
They must be reminded that those youthful years pass quickly into adulthood. Therefore it is imperative they take advantage of the golden opportunity offered to them and not waste them.
The D/can youths of today have a greater opportunity than those in bygone years. If there is one thing I love to know and see is youths growing up nicely, respectfully, ambitiously and with discipline, who are also models to other youths who could emulate them.
Yes! Be thankful to all those who have assisted you so far with more to come, especially your parents, other family members including your mentors of the NYC.
Good luck youths! I wish you well. May God bless you and surround you always during your learning years to adulthood, employment and thereafter.
