Just wondering when the communication service for mobiles will be more stable. It seems to be hit and miss. Sometimes you can get through and sometimes you get the automated message: ” the number you have dialed is unavailable” I know people are doing their best and I am not criticising but part of the recovery process is communication between friends and family in Dominica and abroad.
The thing is: we have to learn from this terrible event because if we don’t, we will be caught out again. It could be next year.
We need hurricane-proof backup systems for the utilities – deep-sunk water containers/wells in each district, massive hurricane-proof warehouses for storing foodstuff etc and there should be mandatory standards in house building. Like near hurricane-proof roofing etc.
Finally, it is a bit disappointing that scientists have not found a way to divert or dissipate hurricanes. Something like an ice crystal bomb that could cripple a hurricane when it is in its infancy.
Surely the cost of such measures would be infinitely less than the human and financial cost that a hurricane can bring.

Anyone else getting crazy about the development and the information flow following this catastrophy?
Maria came 3.5 days ago. Since then the world hardly knows that something bad happened anywhere out there. This is a real mess. Main information came from one overflow with a small plane, and from HAM Radios, those guys use long waves I guess to communicate worldwide with other freaks, they usually don’t belong to this century. Guys, you are the men!! Q95FM doing a great job now, only information exchange for the people walking in.
But beside that? Nothing. The whole east of the island, Marigot down to Grand Bay, is farther away from help than mars. Why the heck doesn’t Domlec have ANY backup systems? Why doesn’t hurricane protection include building a hurricane-proof power station? Why doesn’t Digicel have any backup, why isn’t there a generator that supplies power to just a router and some lousy internet cable? To adress help it would be a bit useful to know what special
medication and material is needed, what important machines broke.
Wrong time to mention? What else can you do now sitting at your computer, beside throwing money in that direction? Next cat. 5 is waiting folks, Dominica has to look after that at latest when rebuilding. That is no joke, whoever wants to sell the Dominicans (filthy expensive) power, phone service, water, has to serve and spend enough money for protection against wind. A country out of power and any communication for nearly 4 days is a debacle.
Three hours ago the reported death toll suddenly doubled. May all those r.i.p. . Hope and prayer that there is not much more to come. The world urgently needs to know what is happening out there. Giant help is needed, that much is clear. So spread the word, as there seem to be not many other ones who do that right now.
First information abt. damages https://pressroom.oecs.org/hurricane-maria-situation-report-1#

Guess Mr. Skerrit took this with him when he went to Antigua. This video should be an instant pocket opener. At least 20k people watched now, yesterday at this time I was no. 106…
My friend left Loubiere on a helicopter flight to deliver aid to Grand Bay and environs south. Flow service back up, top up your family number if they have flow. Things are happening but slowly, we all have loved ones there and must stick together. I agree, we need to see more action on the ground!
Kal, Shut your mouth you are not thinking properly, and get your facts right before you start writing rubbish.
Do not blame them. Dominica is a small country. How much can they do, all at once or soon?
Have you ever experienced a storm of any nature where you reside? Where in the world is free of disasters? You may be in Mars, somewhere in space. Even there has its storms. Our disasters may very well originate from there.
I hope you are not in Canada also the US and Europe for we get a lot of that in spring, summer, autumn (Fall), rain, thunderstorms, lightning and winter storms.
A few years ago before Christmas Ontario had an ice storm. A few years prior to that Quebec had a worst ice storm. There was no power or very few people had it in various areas, some for months.
In the area I reside, the power went out a Saturday evening and was restored the following week, Tuesday evening. This is Canada!
Therefore, let us be compassion and do our utmost to be patient. My family and I are as anxious as anyone of you to hear of our relatives and friends.
Let me further inform you. In Canada/Ontario, we have telephone service. There is only one telephone provider that if the power goes off we can use the phone. Others as Rogers, may last for only 24 hours and then their customers will not have phone service.
Of course the Internet would be down. Those who have their phone system through the internet will also be out of luck. It could even affect cellular phones.
When there are storms as an ice storm which affect the telephone lines, Bell Canada is the only one to my knowledge which phone lines are up and running; not their internet service. I was fortunate when we had the ice storm I was able to use the telephone because of this provider’s service. Not that I care too much for them but they appear to be reliable at times as such.
So go easy on DOMLEC and others in Dominica. When I look at the pictures, the destruction of Dominica, it saddens me. We can only hope our loved ones are well.

Looking for Francis Severin in Elmshall & Oliver Sorhaindo of Delices for Clara Severin.
How many Francis Severin are there in Dominica?
I know of one, the son of the late Webster and Jean Severin.
This Francis is the cousin of my sister-in-law’s daughter. These reside in T & T. I spoke to them after the hurricane and was informed this “Francis Severin” was in T & T on business. He went to B/dos so he could be closer to D/ca in the event he can get some travel means of returning to Dominica.
I do not know if this is the Francis Severin you mean. I also realize there may be more than one Francis Severin. Let us know. God bless!
