12 qualify from calypso eliminations

After a two-year absence, four-time calypso king, Dice, is off to the February 5 quarterfinals of this year’s calypso competition.

His calypso “Send Me” was well received by patrons at Krazy Kokonuts Sunday evening.

Trendsetter, De Exposer and Young Bull ( Val Cuffy), who also thrilled the crowd with their songs, have made it to the quarterfinals.

Forty-nine individuals participated in last night’s calypso elimination round, and 12 were chosen among them to advance to the next leg of the competition.

Several female calypsonians were to form last night’s line-up, but many were not able to secure a place in the quarterfinal round; however, Leandra, who came on the scene a few years ago, pleased the judges enough to move on to the next round.

Calypso legend Picky, Third Eye, Mighty Aca, Man Himself, Educator, Comforter, and Kendes are the others confirmed for the calypso quarterfinals.

Tarina was absent from the elimination round last night after missing last year’s competition.

    @ Petition for Lady B

Everything in this country is now petition? The judges decision is FINAL! Although I like the sound from the studio recording we have to remember that the calypsonian has to deliver the song during the competition. We can stay comfortably behind our PCs and listen to the studio recorded version of the song and wonder why it didn’t go thru but at the same time why didn’t “you” (this is a question I have to ask myself as well)…Why didn’t I volunteer to judge during the competition? Or better yet do I have the competencies to judge a show and still take the pressure of Dominicans afterward?

It is a very relevant song and maybe it could have been masked differently but we all have to understand that we all have varying tastes and preferences. I think sending 12 out of a field of 49 was a tough job and the judges did an excellent job that night. I hope they keep it up for the rest of the calypso season.

lady bee has a very good calypso but she did not deliver it good enough last night and that is what we fail to realise that the recording is one but performing it before the judges is another
