14 for Junior Calypso Monarch competition

2011 Junior Monarch, De Professor (Sheldon Alfred)

This year 14 participants from schools across Dominica are expected to participate in the Junior Calypso Monarch, organizers of the event have revealed.

The event is organized by the Leo Club of Dominica and serves as a form of motivation and building of self-esteem for participants while providing an opportunity for young entertainers to expose and develop their creative talents.

The Leo Club said participants and winners of the competition have gone on to succeed in the National Calypso Competition including the four-time king Dennison “Dice” Joseph. Another competitor in the event, Donna Lee Peters, also known as “Duchess” and a four-time  Junior Monarch, has been very active on the calypso scene.

In 2012 the Leo Club has partnered with Krazy Kokonuts, not only to host the Junior monarch competion, but also a tent which they say will give the participants an opportunity to practice their songs before a live audience.

The show, which for the past 13 years have been organized by the Leo Club, is sponsored by LIME Dominica, Krazy Kokonuts, Kairi FM, Fast Cash, the Sign Man, among others.

Proceeds from the gate goes towards community-based club activities such as the Leo Club’s annual Christmas Pre School parties and donations to needy organizations such as The Grotto and The Infirmary.

The tent is to be held on Sunday, January 29 at the Krazy Kokonuts from 3 pm while the monarch competition itself is to be held on February 9 at the same venue.

last nite when they anounce the compitition, they said it was going to be held at Harlem Plaza, there was no mention of tent and no mention of krazy kokonut.Something fishy there.Futhermore Harlem Plaza is more conducive for the school kids to get to.
Don’t try to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
PLease rethink that move,it won’t work.

Eyes Red as PRO of the Leo Club I believe I am well informed enough to respond to your comment. Firstly, there is nothing fishy going on. Wherever you heard the show was to be held at Harlem Plaza had their information totally wrong. Although during discussions about a venue for the event at club meetings, Harlem Plaza was brought up as it has been the home of the show for a few years. But when we weighed up all the options Krazy Koconuts was the best location for the club.

We at the Leo Club also agree “Harlem Plaza is more conducive for the school kids to get to” but we had a decision to make and the folks at Krazy Koconuts was very accommodating to us and so we decided to have the show there.

As with almost every other situation, change is always a difficult thing to accept and we did expect some opposition to this decision but the show will be held at Krazy Koconuts this year and during our postmortem we shall discuss whether this was the right decision or not.

I want to thank you for your interest in the Junior Calypso Monarch and hope you will attend the Tent on Sunday 29th at 3PM & the Monarch competition on the 9th at 5PM at The Krazy Koconuts
