15 to compete in Cooperatives Calypso Competition

15 calypsonians will take to the stage to compete in the first ever Cooperatives Calypso Competition scheduled to be held at the Harlem Plaza on December 1.

The winner is expected to take home $7,000 in cash.

The competition is being organized by the Cooperatives Division as part of activities to observe International Year of Cooperatives.

The 15 competitors signed contracts for participating in the show on Wednesday morning at Calypso House.

At the contract signing ceremony Registrar at the Cooperatives Division, Mariette Cannoville, said new strategies must be developed to educate citizens on the cooperative movement on the island.

“We are faced with a lot of challenges for the show but are seeing a bright light now and everything is falling into place and persons may wonder why cooperative division having a calypso show but as I say what better way, let the calypsonians do the commentary on the cooperative movement in Dominica, let us hear in song what is happening within the sector,” she said.

Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services and Community Development and Gender Affairs, Joyette Fabien, says, the cooperative movement has played an important role in Dominica’s economy and participants must promote the movement as the way forward.

“From small beginnings it has made remarkable progress over the years and now provides persons with opportunities that address their practical needs,” she said.
