A call for WCMF “birthday gift”

A call has been made to local television providers to dedicate a channel specifically to the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF).

The channel will be some sort of “birthday gift” since the festival is being staged for the 18th time this year, according to marketing assistant at the Dominica Festival Committee (DFC), Leroy Wadix Charles.

He noted that the local media needs to be more active in promoting the island’s biggest event.

“I am appealing to Marpin and SAT to give us a channel as our 18th birthday gift … we are now mature,” he said. “If you need content, we will get you content. Give us an 18th birthday present. It will go a long way in embracing the opportunities… 18 years only come once.”

He urged local radio stations to promote WCMF acts.

“We are looking forward to the DJ’s especially the younger ones who are on the air every day to put in their repertoire, to rotate the music of the festival,” Charles stated. “If you need some of the music, make your jump drives available and you can call me at any time for whatever song you need.”

He noted that the print media must assist in trying “to get this thing off the ground.”

“We need to really put our foot down because this is only for Dominica,” he said.

He described the WCMF as the “greatest thing that has happened to Dominica’s arts and culture.”

“The culmination of the Bouyon, the soukous, Kompas, Zouk, Reggae, Dancehall … where else you can get that appetizing menu of entertainment in the world? Where else?” he asked.

Charles mentioned that the 18th edition of the festival is a “tremendous milestone,” because it has been through many difficult circumstances.

“We have withstood hurricanes, the financial depression, we have withstood the upsurges in terms of cost to produce this festival, the increase of band fees, performances … even to produce this festival and the subvention continue to be the same,” he noted. “But we continue to have that quality in the way we deliver this festival to the public and I am looking for the extra from the media houses.”

This year the festival will take place from October 24-26 at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.

This gift should also include a plea for an increased subvention by the government. For such a key component of our tourism product we need this increased subvention to improve the acts for the festival.

Get serious man. SO they will keep replaying old Creole Festivals over and over again?

Furthermore if you want something done, pick up the phone and set up an appointment with these the GM of Mapin or SAT and discuss the matter. Making those flippant remarks at a news conference will get you nowhere.

Promotion of of the arts in DA is severely hindered by the lack of comprehension of Copyright. Sadly we see foreign influx at the expense of our local talent!!!!!
