Carlyn XP – Drunk in Love (Beyoncé Reggae Cover)

Carlyn XP imageBelow is a new release by front line vocalist for Fanatik Band, Carlyn XP. It’s a cover in reggae with a touch of rock rhythm stylings of Drunk in Love originally recorded in Hip Hop by Beyoncé Knowles.

We present it as a refreshing blend of quality vocals by Carlyn and the production skills of her marital and music partner, Cornell Phillip.

Everything is good about this recording. If we did not have the knowledge that this was a dominica singer, we would have been prasing this song. This recording is clean and the vibes is right. However, the guitar part is good, but i do not think it should come in in the intro. I would prefered to hear some strings or a horns.

Massive production… Great effort Carlyn XP. love your logo!!! Vocal clarity and pitch wicked!!!! Ingenious with that R&B cross over. On this one DA lead and then JA might consider!!!!

A few remarks on how we seek continual improvement. Firstly I think that the tempo is a bit too fast and thus not allowing your voice to express that true drunkenness state, especially the first 2-3 bars of the lyrics (Beyonce intro). I place my observation on the first three words (I’ve been drinking 2x does not connote a state of drunkenness) and then you see how someone DRUNK in love gets gradually aggressive in the various vocal intonation that pursues (Beyonce version). Your first and second expressions of “drunk in love” are too abrupt on drunk it would sound better like drrrunk. A bit too excessive with the drum rolls and then you started with an acoustic rim shot and at 1:52 – 2:13 one hears an electronic snare drum, not too sure what effect you were looking for in the measure of music. In addition not too sure what effect you were looking for with the male autotune back up on “Graining (grinding) on that wood, graining (grinding), graining (grinding) on that wood”. Finally in cover versions especially with the calibre of Beyonce on this song in particular, one literally has to get into that vocal zone to a certain degree you did. Drunk in love associated with blurred speech, laughter, aggression, breathlessness, elements that are most evident in her original. I noted and enjoyed the hick up effect on “oh baby”!!! Finally in cover versions always retain some key signature piece of music/instrument from the original (there was a distinctive keyboard tone which is actually a Major effect of the song… also (we be all night, love, love … love love is the highest vocal pitch Beyonce reaches in the original (a key signature of the song), you opted to use back up vocals… I am sure that you would have been able to surpass that octave she sang it in!!!!).

That’s where dem Jcans have the edge on us especially when it comes to doing cover versions. They have mastered these very fine points. However the average person who listens to music dont check for all these minute production fine points and details especially when partying. Something we will gradually learn and incorporate into our music because producers do look for ALL these details in determining which songs are gonna make it big on the charts. I listened under headphones for at least 10-15x on each version. Surprising there are moments when you actually sound like Beyonce in terms of the actual octave she sings it in!!! With all that said we believe that this version in particular going very very very very far. Brilliant effort and justice well served on this cover version. Your voice is simply mesmerizing…

I disagree with this lengthy analysis, they don’t need a fine tooth comb on that one. The production is good, just too many drum rolls, done, they will take it from there, Fingers knows.

Nice vocals, girlfriend can siing, yyes!
Could do without the drum rolls though, bit distracting and they are in the wrong places although ala Lucky Dube, the rolls could be more sparce. The One-drop alone would av do it justice. Very encouraging cover.

Make sure you guys save one for me. I will be there to receive it next year by this time–God’s will be done

In the mean time make sure that the two of you remain “drunk in Love”–the cord that bind you two together; which cannot be broken. Love you guys!
