Collywood launches local soap opera

A new locally made and produced soap opera is set to hit Pay Per View mobile screens worldwide.

Collywood producer Junior Hart is hopeful that it will place Dominica on the map and will quickly establish the island as a thriving place for Caribbean TV.

“This will be the first time that Dominicans abroad can watch Dominican produced films and soap contents on all of the platforms such as IPods, and various tablets and mobile phones,” Hart said in a release. “This means you could be in the lounge of an air terminal with your digital tablets watching a Dominican movie produced by Collywood.”

Called ‘Tenants’  the soap opera is supposedly the first of its kind in the region and it is aimed at developing local film production. The soap opera will also be distributed in Africa by Media Navigation under the platform of African Caribbean Cinema Initiative, according to Hart.

“Tenant is a good TV content that places Dominican cinema/TV on a global platform especially in the trend of developing low budget production through home videos and local story telling,” Hart explained. “It is an extension of African stories and Africans love to see television content that bridges the gap between them and blacks in the diaspora.”

The production is currently on Collywood TV under it’s digital pay per view platform  http://www.collywoodcinemas.com/COLLYWOOD-TV-PAY-PER-VIEW.html

It can also be accessed through a banner and video player on the DNO Home Page.

    WTF????

Collywood people wrote ALL these positive comments except Roseau Valley who apparently knows nothing of what he speaks.

Anybody who knows anything about television production knows that Collywood is FAKE, MEDIOCRE and CRAPPY. A PURE JOKE!

Who all you think all you fooling? STUPES!

Is Roseau Valley also a film critique ? We know he or she is a serious political and socio_economic analyst. But i find the analysis solid, fair, deep, professional ,sensitive, genuine and sincere.

The critisms were more like positive suggestions for improvent and if they should be embraced and accepted in 99aced

A distinction must be made between offering a ‘critique’ and making ‘criticisms’.

Furthermore, criticism itself can be constructive, positive and/or negative. I note that my contribution below has prompted many responses and some contributors have accused me as being a “hater” and being negative.

Thank you for recognizing that my comments, as unsolicited as they were, are not meant to dampen the enthusiasm of the producer, actors and those who enjoy watching the production.

Clearly, from a technical/artistic perspective, the films are lacking in some regard but as a budding initiative, it must be complimented, encouraged and praised without setting a bar for mediocrity because it is Dominican.

From a business perspective, my comment on the costs has to do with strategic marketing- the point was made that the Producer should have made a concerted effort to build a core viewership by having introductory pricing structure as part of the promotion budget and also consider package discount rental. For example, the first two episodescould have been free to encourage viewership or where one purchases 5 of more episodes as a package, the cost would be reduced etc.

After two episodes, I was able to form an informed opinion on the production. One who knows anything about films can make a preliminary assessment with regard to the quality of the production without having viewed all 16 episodes.

Generally, the Producer/Director and actors should used the comments made therein to improve the product where possible and within budget. I am certain that Mr. Hart, as a professional understands that and unlike those who believe that my comments were too critical, I am sure he welcomes the feedback and attention that my contribution has given to his production.

I invite Mr. Hart to have more episodes filmed in the Roseau Valley having the Trafalgar falls, Freshwater lake and the Sulphur springs etc as scenic backgrounds. Speak to the Hon. Dr. Collins McIntyre for some concessions in that regard. I am sure he will be very supportive.

      Respectfully
      Roseau Valley

I sorry to be negative but Collywood TV is pure rubbish. Most of the programs are of terrible quality….they had some ancient african cartoon pure nonesense. Tenants is filmed mainly in Giraudel, YES Giraudel is a beautiful village but this is just crap. Junior Hart need to do better than that…

You are not being negative, that’s your opinion. So what shows on Dominican TV is better than Collywood. I happen to see some program made up of advertising done by a local Dominican producer , if you are talking about crap production and pure rubbish, you should see that one. Pity majority of Dominica dont agree with you.

      November 1, 2012

Oh and another thing..if you feel Collywood is rubbish. Dont watch the channel. Simple. But I know for a fact you are not doing nothing, not even a fraction of what Collywood has done to provide employment for unknown people. NOW THEY ARE KNOWN IN COLLYWOOD. Bless up

I really don’t see how any body with eyesight or hearing, can like this show :-?. The actors can’t act, the lighting is poor, majority of the time you can’t hear what’s being said and why is the camera like two feet from the peoples faces, which makes them look horrible.

Lol..I could kill that slick, but I know its soap. really enjoyed this concept. As a Dominica living abroad, I try to keep up with Dominica. For years I have been disappointed with music and theater coming out of my country, even that organization Come See TV, they have given off a bad vibes. Collywood I find is great, I cannot believe someone had the initiative to create something like this in Dominica..no disrespect. Dominica, you need this, we need this. All the talk for years about marketing Dominica abroad, this is it! The government and those so called marketing people like Mr Piper should get on this Collywood train, it’s going to make all of you look bad. Well done Collywood…just dont let them pull you down with negative comments. Keep your heads up and keep doing what you doing, you all aiming for greatness. Blessings

Cant believe this was produced in Dominica. This is ground breaking stuff! I paid 10 US$ dollars to see Dominica can dance and what a waste of money…I saw some other production coming out of Dominica on Come See TV and that also was poor streaming quality. Collywood is miles apart with their production quality. It’s about bloody time someone in Dominica start to produce some serious stuff for Caribbean people abroad. These guys know their stuff. Hail up Collywood, just hope you keep it up and grow..you will have my full 100 support and its not just in words, I have just seen 5 episode and will be going through the rest by next week. Well Done great stuff!

I must say that I love the concept of the Tenants, I can see where this is going by the director. I have worked in TV in the US for many years. I have looked at the comments on this page and see that 98 per sent is positive and seems that the local people at home are enjoying Collywoood idea. The gentleman who stated that camera angles and music should be reviewed..I don’t agree. In this business, one thing I have learned, everybody and I mean everybody have their own way of doing things. Even in my professional arena, production costing millions will be scrutinized by other director and producers. I refrain from giving my personal views because the person who has an idea, he will execute it in the way he sees fit. The big question here is, will the MAJORITY like it? Once the MAJORITY likes it then I believe that person or company is onto something…because the MAJORITY rules as they say. Collywood seemed to have captured the MAJORITY despite some of the individual small minded comments which seems to be coming from people lacking knowledge and really don’t know what it takes to produce this kind of work with no major funding. I loved the series after purchasing all 12 episode, will be waiting for the next round as they say. Coming from a professional camera man, I have to say that Collywood, you are on your way over there in Dominica. This is a sure hit in the Caribbean market. Well done, Dominicans you wont know what you have got until it leaves you and get taken in by other nationalities. :-D

I was so excited and paid to watch an episode I must say they must consider the price cause £2.00 an episode which last only 26 minutes is a bit much. Maybe if it is charged at a fix price will be much better.

I also paid £2, I dont think thats too much, remember production costs, the artists and technical stuff have to get paid, and I understand that Collywood get no help from government. Big up. I think that is very good. Come see TV is charging all U$10.00 for poor quality…sorry what I saw on Collywwod PPV I was well happy…going to watch the other Episode weekend.

I applaud this initiative. There is Hollywood, Bollywood, Nollywood, why not Collywood but why Collywood and not something closer to Domyhood?

The producer Mr. Junior Hart and the entire cast must be commended. This is the Next Level that I would have long expected from Alwin, Nigel, Hyacinth, and Alex. I hope that Mr. Hart will work with these individuals in developing this exportable product. It will definitely do a lot to expose Dominica.

With excitement to support local, I purchased and viewed the first two episodes. Generally, I found the production to be of a very high quality with effective cinematography, the use of the natural scenes and beauty of Dominica.

The lighting is great and does well to enhance the theme, mood, setting of the story. The stories are original, innovative and fresh. The actors are appropriately casted and their performance on screen` is encouraging.

I like the plot, settings and the depiction of the natural scenery and way of life in Dominica. The films will definitely create a link to Dominica for overseas-based Dominicans. I also got a sense of believability of circumstances and identified with the experiences of the characters.

However, after viewing the first two episodes, I was a little disappointed with the contents, the story line and the gender stereotypes. I also found the characters are too loud and engaging in too much quarrelling and unnecessary emotional outbursts. The subject was not very family friendly. This is the same reason that I do not enjoy some of the films from Nollywood (Nigerian movies), the style that Collywood seems to be imitating.

I found the films lacking in terms of the integration of appropriate music- the reason I like Bollyword films. It exposes the unique Indian culture.
I thought the films could do more to promote the unique Dominican culture and incorporate some local foods, cadence or calypso or in fact any appropriate background music that better sells the story. A greater effort has to be made to capture the interest of all the senses.

The films seem almost void of special effects and a better job must be done to improve camera angles and determining when to have close up etc for better effect.

The first two episodes should do a more coherent job in giving the viewer a better idea of what to come next in the series. I did not get a comprehensive understanding of the central point that the director is trying to make in the series of short episodes

One would appreciate that the way the characters are presented is important to the understanding and analysis of the story. Therefore, the Director should allow us to learn more about the characters primarily through the appearance and dialogue with each other- not through monologues with the camera. I did not like the monologue scene of the male character while seating in the car simply talking to the camera. Boring!

It would have been better to have him walking down a street speaking with a friend or on a Domino table, or on the beach etc saying the same thing in a social conversational setting

Lastly, I respectfully found the episode to be too short and not entertaining enough for the price of $3.58. Had the price been lower, I would have been more encouraged to watch all 10 episode. It would have been better to get viewers hooked with a low introduction price for the first 5 episodes and then increase the price after wetting the appetite

Good luck and best wishes. I hope you accept my review in the same constructive manner in which I gave it, albeit unsolicited.

    Respectfully
    Roseau Valley

I enjoy the show and found the price no problem. What I dont understand with comments like this. The same old same old. Can I ask the respectful gentleman, why don’t he put his hand in his pocket and do a better job? This is what I don’t understand. For years nothing has been done, and here comes an organization with their own idea, using their own money, working and building Dominican artists. It’s all well what you are saying sir…but if you are in production, why are we not seeing your production…it’s always easy to say this and that, but talk is cheap on here, but the walk and making things happen like what Collywood has achieve is a different ball game. I have watched 10 episodes and you cannot judge one or two episodes, I think the music is different because what you talk about is old hat sir..that is the same old thing…I like the way everything is put together and the ideas are different. I saw last night episode 16 and I really enjoyed it. This series will grow into something great and I believe it will become as big as young and restless. Remember as Black people we do not have the funds to make great big productions, so we have to make do with whatever is available. I LOVE WHAT IS HAPPENING. Not everybody will enjoy what Collywood is doing, but who cares, as far as I am aware, they have blown up Dominica in a short space of time. I dont even think Junior Hart is even bothered about certain comments..he know what he is doing and they are focus. Good Luck Collywood and keep up the great work!

Are you for real £3.58 in the US is too high a price. If you can’t afford this in this day and age, God help our people. I dont know much about the business side, but what I do know that show must have cost some serious money to produce especially 16 episodes so far..if the man is going to undersell the product then whats the point. I think the price is no problem for me I paid £18 to watch all 9 episode and I really enjoyed Tenants. We are suppose to be better off in nthe USA and the UK and we are screaming about a few dollars. I know I am supporting my own people back home as the actors have to be paid and production costs have to be met.

Its beyond me how u can say the production is of a high quality?

The lighting is horrible, correction there is NO LIGHTING! This is evident in some episodes some of the actors faces are completely black from shadows.

The audio is crap. Some instances there is no audio. There is no balancing of the audio levels, Sometimes its too high and sometimes too low.

The editing is amateur at best. This is evident in the cuts being made in the middle of a scene, and from the quality of the footage you can clearly see this show is shot with some consumer grade camcorder and is no where close to professional standard. From what I understand from one of the actors there not even a script, their just given a scenario to ad lib in front a cam.

We as Dominicans need to be more REAL! Cause its from Dominica doesn’t make it good or acceptable automatically. This is the most horrible production to ever come out of Dominica and we shouldn’t be embarrassed to say that.

      Eventually the truth will reveal.
