Daddy Chess triumps at Soca Monarch competition; Carlyn Xavier captures Groovy Soca top spot

Daddy Chess

Fanatik lead singer Carlyn Xavier has emerged winner in the Groovy Soca Monarch round of the 2011 Soca Monarch competition while Chester “Daddy” Chess Letang has retained his crown in the Power round of that competition.

The 2011 Soca King Chester “Daddy Chess” Letang wants to see soca music in Dominica take full flight.

Chess stood tall over nine others in the power segment of the Soca Monarch competition at the weekend and defended his soca monarch title for the third time in a row.

This year his song was entitled “Shameless”.

Daddy Chess, who is also well known on the calypso stage, said the soca contest has the potential of putting Dominica “on the map”,  and his hope is that more Dominicans will get involved and become more serious about the soca genre.

Daddy Chess is also one of the front performers of the Swinging Stars band.

Carleen Xavier secured second place with “Like A Fanatic”.

Anwar, who performed “Release” placed third and Delly was fourth with “Sweat”.

In the Groovy segment of the contest at Pottersville Savannah Carleen Xavier proved herself deserving of the top spot with her performance for “Music Fever” and was crowned winner in the early hours of Saturday morning. Phillip Horsford came in second place with “Dancing Shoes”, Dice was third with “Grown and Sexy”, and Clint H fourth, with “First Price”.

Among other major 2011 carnival competitions last week, Tasha Peltier won the Calypso Queen competition while Sheldon “De Professor” Alfred retained his crown for the third time as the Junior Calypso Monarch. Just last evening Nicole Rodriguez won the Miss Teen Dominica pageant.

    Carlyn Xavier

This is aunty Liz here, girl. So now I know for sure that you are still with Fanatic group. I hope you will continue to be part of the reason this band will develop into something big–God permits.

Congratulations young lady! You have made your aunt proud here, in Toronto, my beautiful girl. Didn’t see you in performance, but I know you have the voice, the figure, and the moves–I can imagine your stance on that stage. Second heading into first place. You are going to get there, my gorgeous young lady!

Aunty Liz knows that you can do it. Just stay cool, okay! Humble and discrete; you will have exaltation. I pray my young lady, that God will watch your ways; and that He will guide you on the way up.

Way to go, Girl! I am going to email to your aunty Carol. I am sure she does not know yet, how you have made us proud. God bless you, my darling! And take of your daddy with lots of Love, over there, okay!

Who are you decide who is worshiping the devil or not. And when did you join me in praising Jesus on DNO. But you are quick to jump and criticize my congratulations to my own niece right. Did you not read where I also prayed that God will guide her ways. Yes, I am calling for God’s guidance to the paths she will take as well.

You go ahead do the judging to your heart’s desire. You will have your rewards.

        And, have a good evening!

Chess should not win Mr is not a peoples person. Mr dont greet the common man on the streets and he wants there money and support of them. alot of peeps are of the opinion Mr is fresh. He leaves his work to his home with his head phone to his ears , a plastic bag with two bread in his hand, his head bend watching the road and he walks straight to his home and back to work the same way. Cant give my support to someone like that. He got to take a page from Ency , dice sye hunter n the rest. Jeez
no hard feelings he got to change his attitude.

are you judging the person or the talents that he has? he is not a politician to be here, there and everywhere. All you can’t do better but always judging. What happen you ask him a dollar and he didn’t hear because his headphone was on? LOL

        February 28, 2011

I agree citoyen, people are different,i see him as warm and quiet. This person has something against Chess. When will we as a people learn?

      February 28, 2011

I want to know what is ur real issue with Daddy Chess? Is it that he doesn’t give you a second look? People walk with their headphones on everyday on he streets. What does his plastic bag have to do with attitude?

It’s people like you that just hate on people for no reason. What does him walking to work and back have to do with attitude. You are a sick individual. You must be blind if that’s ‘the way you see it’ because he definitely has the crowd’s attention when he is on the stage, just like Ency, DIce, Sye and Hunter.

Don’t pretend, if Sye had won you would say he is copawayzon too. TONEH

Great show, great performaces, great judging!!

Mark my words, in a few years time this show is definitely going to supersede the calypso finals show in Dominica like it has done in Trinidad and other countries in the region. It is just a matter of time!!

the fact is the calypso competition is becominig much too political and the lyrics monotonous. Only one set of composers songs seem to be dominating and sadly these composers (such as the KINGMAKER), as good as they are have a political agenda and seem to only want to write on one set of topics which is frankly getting really boring.

Hats off to all the competitors in the Soca Monarch show. Keep doing your thing guys. You will soon get the respect you deserve since it’s only you guys who can really put DA on the regional and international entertainment map!!

    February 28, 2011

Congratulations to them both! I think some of our competitors need to put a little more of the stage presence in order to compete, although those I did see were good. But performing is all about the total package. The spring in the waist :-D and all of that! Do our best to be the best so the the competition is so tight next year that the judges have to reconvene, lol, like is a jury where they cannot figure out if the person is innocent or guilty. I know Dominica has the talent. We saw it that night and with a little more spice we can make it! Some of the background props were great too like when the people were exercising. We are a people of talent and we can compete on the world stage!!!

carlyn performed like a diva,,,, but this henderson guy what’s up with him,,,, for so long he’s been in the biz i don’t find he getting the appropriate shine like he should lol

    • justice
      February 28, 2011

Congrats to the winners….carlyn is a DIVA no matter where she performs. she got a powerful and beautiful voice. And was she the only female in the competition? If she was a big PLUS to that! And “mouth of south” u talking bout clint henderson? I personally dont think he is as great by himself as he was with a band. My opinion is that he needs to join a band. By himself he is not so great.

      • DDD
        February 28, 2011

        I fully agree!!!!!

      • Facts
        February 28, 2011

No she wasn’t the only female. There were two of them and she did deserve her stance.
Clint however, I can honestly say did not work towards getting the title. Based on judging criterias Chester did surpass him for Power so did others as well as in Groovy. First hand at the show anyone should be able to tell especially if they KNOW music.

      • TheTop
        February 28, 2011

Clint just need to go behind the scenes,,,He is a good performer/writer/producer. Even if he joins back a band he is better pushing other artist and making his own money!

Also king dicey should at least be 2nd in the groovy section.

Lastly, we need a boyoun Monarch….A competition for the boyoun artist. Not our music nuh? The Competition will make the lyrical content and the music improve drastically!

        Am listening!

Mots, Carlyn is my niece, my brother’s daughter. Thank you for your compliment about her. She inherited that vigor from her aunties–eight of us. Wish I was there, but that makes me proud here man!
