UPDATED WITH PHOTOS: Day Two of WCMF rocks

Chubby in action

Day Two of the 15th Annual World Creole Music Festival featured Grammy award winner Dobet Gnahore’ of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), alongside Third World, Jean-Phillipe Marthely and Joceline Beroard of Kassav, ‘Dominica’s own’ Carimi and Midnight Groovers.

Dobet set the evening air alight with her supercharged, exciting performance and that sort of start gave way for Marthely and Beroard and Third World to ‘bring the noise’ with their timeless classics that speak volumes regionally and internationally.

This was the second time that Third World performed at WCMF and lead guitarist Stephen “Cat” Coore said, “We feel great. The reaction of the people of Dominica was fantastic and we expected nothing less. The times that we have been here before we’ve gotten a great reception and we have a great relationship with the people of Dominica and all the eastern Caribbean, so we give thanks for the Festival and for the wonderful audience.”

Next, Carimi proceeded to rock a crowd that was already very familiar with their up-tempo R&B/Compas fusions with a performance worthy of WCMF, before Chubby and the Midnight Groovers took the party to daybreak with Cadance-lypso.

“We’ve been coming to Dominica since 2002, since we started. It’s like a love story. We fell in love with the people of Dominica the same way they fell in love with us. We can’t explain it, we can’t tell you why. But it’s just a special relationship we have with the people here. They do not negotiate their Carimi and we enjoy it. It’s a very small island and the people here are very friendly. We feel at home and we have a good time when we come here and you can tell by the reaction that we get a lot of love here. And the relationship is going to continue,” stated Mickael Guirand, lead singer of Carimi, during the post-performance press conference.

Look out!now all you touch my nerve, all you dissing “De Culture! There is no misunderstanding about this, Love to Carimi! this is who we be, a loving country, we love to share the love,But my people, Dominican dosen’t give love to their own!Groovers is the Hardest working band for a long time, they entertained us along with Exile ONE; Gramack and the long list of the “Cadance lypso Warriors” that influence Zouck soca bouyan and the vast range of beats that are out there. Now Bouyan is in, and and people knocking bouyan, because it is going through a transition, instead of embracing de culture, the only way it will get better, they dissing it.while they bigging up other bands and glorifing them, they tearing ours apart.Man lets big up our Culture, lets support our culture,COME ON MAN! NOW about that WCMF is time our musicans benifit from that! This is OUR THING, and our musicians are not getting nothing for the kind of money that is being spend.I am saying this here and now, there should be a “host band” made up of guys like FREEDY FITZROY CORNELL and a crew with these guys,to form a back up band, to back up our solo artist like,HARLEY, GILE FONTAINE, TONY VALMOND,and the list can go on; there are great Dominican bands out there playing reggae soca and GOD knows what.DOE tell me you will not get them to come if the price is right?.EXILE ONE should be encouraged to come as often as possible, i guess they woulden’t want to pay the piper.FITZROY WILLIAM can be featured with all the songs he wrote, Man that would be music to enjoy,FITZROY have some reggae songs like HIT ME WITH MUSIC, Dreams of AFRICA with STARET FRANCIS, that great blind musican,i can go on. With the amount of money that is going out, our musicans should have a bigger PAY DAY, iam not saying put all of them on one show!?BUT COME ON what about the Women, every year they should interchange.any way “HAPPY INDEPENDANCE” LET THE TALKS BEGIN:

I THINK THIRD WORLD BAND IS THE GREATEST THEY JUST WAS A BIT TOOO SHORT. WE NEED TO BRING THEM MORE OFTEN. THEY ARE REAL PLAYERS OF INSTRUMENT. NOTHING TO CAUSE VIOLENCE BUT MUSIC FOR COOL MEDITATION. PLZ COMMISSION CON’T TO BRING GROUPS LIKE THAT.THIS WILL ENCOURAGE LESS VIOLENCE.
