DFC announces final line-up for WCMF 2012

Zouk Machine makes a return to WCMF

The Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC), producer of the annual World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) has announced the final line-up for the 2012 staging of the show.

The show will honor cadence-lypso legend Jeff Joseph, popularly known as ‘Jeff Jo’, for his sterling contribution to Dominica’s music culture and for his many years of dedicated service to the island’s cultural and artistic development.

A night of Bouyon, Zouk and Compas will open the gates to the 16th annual World Creole Music Festival on October 26. Patrons will get the opportunity to enjoy acts from local bouyon band WCK, new bouyon sensation Asa Banton, Haitian Compas group Kreyola and Zouk artistes from the French West Indies including Zouk Machine, Tanya St.Val and Luc Leandre.

Night two, October 27, will bring to the stage Barbadian Soca band Krosfyah led by Edwin Yearwood, local soca band Fanatik, Derick “Rah” Peters of WCK fame, Onyan of Burning Flames, Fredo of Seventeen Plus from the USVI, reigning calypso monarch Dice and road march king Sye. Also on the line up for that night is Disip Gazzman of Haiti, Reggae star Tarrus Riley, and Triple Kay Global.

Roots music will be the highlight of night three, October 28, with a major tribute to Jeff Jo. That night will feature Damian “Jr Gong” Marley out of Jamaica, Ophelia Marie and Michelle Henderson. The Original Grammacks International is also expected to make their debut performance on the WCMF stage paying tribute to their late leader Jeff Jo. T-Vice and Chubby and the Midnight Groovers will also perform on the closing night of the festival.

The Friday night of the festival is also dubbed “Dominica Night” which is intended to give Dominicans the opportunity to pay homage to their country, organizers say. That night will also showcase rising musical artistes from DOMFESTA,  Cadence Lypso competition winners, Colton T, Asher Thomas, Shameka Sorhaindo, and Chad Astaphan backed up by BREVE.

A mini opening ceremony celebration to kick off the weekend is also carded for Friday night.

its very sad that after sixteen years of WCMF, when the festival should be at its HIGHEST STANDARD its now taking a turn for the worst.A dominican star such as nasio should never be left out.Psquare and Macheal Montano should be the top acts for the festival..so many hott soca artists in the caribbean and none of them are ON.At the end of the day these folks would attract many persons of different age range. If the ticket gonna remain so high they might as well raise the standard of the show…very weak line up,after sixteen years!

qui diabe ‘asa banton” his version of bouyon music can NOT match up to that of WCK…if thats what we call music and lyrics, one ought to give his songs another listening ear..to me, our bouyon music is going down down down if thats what we r entertaining… they should at least put someone else on the line up besides him..there r so many other popular bands and individual that the people want to see..

      October 10, 2012

Asa Banton is not trying to match up to any other band HE is a young man from where you maybe hate so badly GRAND BAY moving to his style of music which is not repetition like the triple k can perform HE entertains a crowd… GIVE THE YOUNG MAN A CHANCE he has been to places all over the world,, isnt that enough proof he is one of the great? RELAX..DO NOT BE A HATER..

My fellow Dominicans, there are many differet forms of the creole language.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creole_language
“A creole language, or simply a creole, is a stable natural language developed from the mixing of parent languages; creoles differ from pidgins (which are believed by scholars to be necessary precedents of creoles) in that they have been nativized by children as their primary language, with the result that they have features of natural languages that are normally missing from pidgins.
Road sign in Guadeloupe Creole meaning Slow down. Children are playing here. The literal translation is “Lift your foot. There are small people playing here”.

The vocabulary of a creole language consists of cognates from the parent languages, though there are often clear phonetic and semantic shifts. On the other hand, the grammar often has original features but may differ substantially from those of the parent languages. Most often, the vocabulary comes from the dominant group and the grammar from the subordinate group, where such stratification exists”.

please visit this site which will educate on the many different form of the creole language.

      FYI:
When the WCMF originated in 1997, to the organizers, the word “creole” (Kréyol) was used to identify it as one of the only truly indigenous music events in Dominica.

indigenous: originating in and characteristic of a particular region or country (in this case, French creole).

Words and meanings sometimes play different roles over time. Like the word “gay” used to mean happy or jubilant, as in the well known heterosexual Dominican band “Gay Lords”.

In the interest of increasing profits, organizers today tend to rationalize their motive by invoking the literal meaning of “creole.”

rationalize: to ascribe (one’s acts, opinions, etc.) to causes that superficially seem reasonable and valid but that actually are unrelated to the true, possibly unconscious and often less creditable or agreeable causes.

To my knowledge, we have only seen French, Spanish and English creole acts at the WCMF. This sets the precedent for Arabic, Dutch, German, Malay, Ngbandi, and Portuguese-based creole acts in the future.

Then it will truly be a World Creole Music Festival.

why do we always seems to just include what ever we want in our festival.take a look at at Jamaica .them people never invite calypso..zouk or even the same creole music we are trying to compare with reggae and so on how come they don’t invite swinging stars, wck. or even our princess of of music Michell Henderson to there reggae festive.please the biggest and best was in the early days of the festive.just see when our music icon dies then they give tribute.please give Nasio Fountain his flower NOW,those who in charge need awake up call.BAD JOB.I don’t want to know what is the 17 years going to be.Micheal Jordan, tom and Jerry ,or maybe Jessica Simpson.lol

    September 6, 2012

To the moderator or administrator of this blog, kindly, can you please find out from the Dominica Festival Commission, what is the meaning or definition of the term “World Creole Festival”.

Your answer if you receive one, would be greatly appreciated.
If you are skeptical about my request,I would like to inform you that my friends and myself have attended seven (7) Creole Festivals. We come first of all because music is universal, secondly it is known Dominicans give a mean “Fete”,thirdly it’s about Caribbean togetherness, mainly O.E.C.S Unity, fourthly Dominicans are
some of the nicest people you will ever meet
(that is a fact )every nationality has it’s
weaknesses. Fifthly,we have stayed at the same establishment, they are like family to us now.

There is another reason why more folks will
show up for the last night, “Jr Gong “.
Kymani Marley was in Antigua about two (2) months ago, flew up from SKB because I like Kymani, his style and songs , the show was great but at the end folks were saying, Jr Gong
would have gotten a bigger crowd ,so it was revealed that Jr Gong would be in the Nature Isle for The World Creole Festival and the brother will have company. So Dominica when Morgan Heritage graced your stage, you had
Reggae, give. Jr Gong and his entourage some time.

I love Nasio music myself, had a conversation
with him and for whatever reasons ,he is not headlined in Dominica but outside of his home country he is a star. Continue to support him by buying the music, but don’t dis the festival, it’s
very disheartening hence I asked the question?
Define “World Creole Music Festival ” creole means many things to differebt people,it was not called Cadence,Bouyon,Zouk or Zydeco music festival, the dorminant words are World
    Creole and Music.

A suggestion would be to have one night exclusively for Cadence, Bouyon Company and
    Zouk.

My friends and I look forward to being in the

Nature Isle for Seven (7) days, hoping to tackle
some part of The Waitukubuli National Trail and
    Fun times at the park.

Thanks for the space I was given on your site and hope my posting don’t infuriate anyone. One love and remember the Caribbean is a melting pot .

    September 5, 2012

the main problem is that zouk/compas/soukous music is not popular as before when the festival started… so they must include reggae/dancehall or soca acts to pull the crowd because those are the genres that are hot now…the compa acts need more promo, they might be good, but cant pull a large crowd which may be worth what they are charging but personally i like the line up… they should have tried to include P-Square because they are a mix of zouk/r&b… and both young and old like them… Damien marley is good, but not so hot…a dancehall artist would have been a better choice…but he will still bring a good crowd and good performace… so big up… please support the festival.. the line up is good

Ok seriously you guys are poor in planning, this line up is poor and weak in my opinion. All these bands have performed at the festival with the exception of the Jamaican artist and Asa Banton.
This would be my Line up
    Friday Night
    WCK
    Asa Banton
    Kaysha (Zouk Artist)
    Misty Jean (Kompa Artist)
    Tarrus Riley

    Saturday
I would keep the legends of Soca with the old skool guys of Flames, ck, 17 plus
    Zouk All Stars
    Triple Kay
Bracket (From Africa – Singing Yori Yori)
    Mr. Vegas

    Sunday Night
Gramacks, ophelia Michele, midnight groovers (all together)
    Damian Marley
T-Mickey (kompa -son of sweet mickey)
Small Axe band – Soca from St.Kitts
    Dan Junior – Zouk Kompa

Where is P-Squared? I mean come-on man? Give de people a little real vibes especially the line-up for Sunday! Is that your way of saying work on Monday so we can skip Sunday even if Jnr Gong on Sunday or we pay for Jnr Gong on Sunday and “take what u get” in the rest of the line-up? Certainly not impressed.

I have never commented on a WCMF line-up but this one definitely is out of whack!!! Come-on man, my money I paying!!!

Eddie Toulon gone but surely not forgotten. atleast when he was here emphasis was placed on the “creole” in world creole music festival, now it seems its placed on “world music festival”and the creole part is forgotten.mr present chairman dont you like creole music?cause in my opinion you keep pushing the creole music further and further away from the festival.

    • Dizzy
      September 5, 2012

Just so you know, “creole” does not only refer to patois. Almost every country has their creole ranging from Haitian to Jamaican and even Louisiana has their french based creole. If you all only want to hear patois then the show should be called World Patois Music Festival.
