DFC to recruit 55 Volunteers for 15th World Creole Music Festival

August 25th 2011, ROSEAU, Dominica: —- The Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC), producers of the annual Dominica World Creole Music Festival hopes to recruit up to fifty-five (55) local volunteers to provide support for the various functional areas of the festival scheduled to be staged here, October 28-30 at the Windsor Park Stadium.

The recruiting process which commenced earlier this week is being coordinated by DFC Board Member, Simeon Joseph and WCMF Hospitality and Volunteer Coordinator, Mrs. Marilyn Charles, is expected to be completed shortly to allow for a period of training and orientation of the selected volunteers.

Speaking about the development of selecting the of volunteers who will be serving this world-class music event, Mr. Simeon Joseph explained that the process has proven to be an exciting one bringing together a cross section of the people with varying talents and interests.

“By and large most of the people being interviewed were honest and I am confident that the DFC will be able to secure a cadre of dedicated, productive and a customer service oriented group of people”, explained Mr. Joseph. He went on to say that many of the people have a good idea of what the festival is all about and therefore that should make the process of volunteering more effective and rewarding to the DFC.

According to Mrs. Charles, “the next step will be choosing the numbers for each functional area of the event and scheduling training and orientation. The customer service element of the training will also include a safety, security and health training with Consultant, Mr. Marcus Francis.

“A talk through of the assigned areas and responsibilities is also a vital element for a successful event as they facilitate event management, spectators, artistes, media and staff facilities”, explained Mrs. Charles.

Volunteers will be approved and accredited by the DFC Events Management Team and will be expected to add value to the spectator experience, providing a helpful service within the WCMF and in the wider community without financial reward. Volunteers will be needed in all the key functional areas of the festival and will assist greatly in ensuring a memorable 15th World Creole Music Festival.

All the stuff going on and on yet when will one hear of a few millions profit.. So many folks can be seen walking around the place with vip and all kinds of passes like a big piece of bling, for such activities, tout mon tonen vip. After all, if a profit is to be made, something has to be done about all them free tickets and vip passes. One does respect that fact that there are some officials who must be on the vip list, especially those in high office and the heads of the big sponsors, but surely not every tom, dick, and harry just getting free tickets for the fest.
After all, when one would see a few thousands in the fest, do not think for a moment that Dominica is making millions. After 15 years , Dominica should be reaping huge profits from the festival. Now that there is new leadership, lets give them some time to see whether or not the millions coming in. Please, please, is it illegal for Dominicans to be given the privilege to get a proper account of the world creole festival? Is it illegal or indiscreet to have the small man on the street have a read of the financial report – by professionals- of the expenditures, funds received and profit(if any) and other information? Remember business and friendship don’t really mix well. Have heard it said, ” My friends are those who pay me!” Friends of the festival are those who pay their “hard owned money, and support the festival head on. Not those who are looking for a free pass and a free ticket or getting a free ticket and trying to sell it!
C’est Musique ah nous! C est place ah nous!De love for the country real strong so no worries to give back to the Nature isle and not always wanting everything free of charge. God bless Dominica! A chosen Land!

Every year I’ve been a volunteer for the WCMF and to the people who think that you don’t enjoy yourself, you are very wrong! I have enjoyed myself every single year, even if it came with a little work! Congratulation to the 55 people who will be chosen! It’s a pity I won’t be able to make it this year! Do have a wonderful Independence this year!

I am very disappointed that at every turn we seek to exploit our people. 55 people will be exploited. DFC is looking for volunteers to do the hard work. They will not be entering free to enjoy themselves. They will be entering free to work and work hard. It is unfair and it is exploitation because everyone else in the organisation will be getting paid. It is unfair!! Even if the pay is meagre and minimum, it is wrong to be asking for volunteers. Why not volunteer your time also? Why doesn’t management volunteer their time? If we want to save money, we need to cut bigger amounts not the small man. SHAME!!

We down play these things to make it look like we are involving other people. NO! It is using people to make ourselves look better. In any event, DFC usually gives away more than 55 free tickets which contributes to its continued losses. At least, give the people a stipend. Some of us have worked in Creole Fest and it is hard, it is donkey work. If you are at work you have no time to enjoy show. Common DFC!

Not to be paid? These volunteers are not unemployed persons, I hope. Because it would be a disgrace to recruit the unemployed and take advantage of them in that way while others enjoy their lucrative salaries.
Congratulations to the volunteers who are true patriots.
But DFC should be talking about JOB CREATION and not CHARITY. The WCMF in 15 years should be able to pay for services, things are tough and there’s no free lunch. I hope some of the volunteers are the opportunists who receive complimentary tickets, wine and dine in the VIP lounge.

but the irony is the 55 volunteers going inside free please not that vat have to be paid for them so to me they are not paying but vat have to be paid for them and that is 1 5% of watever is the cost for the night. that just makes no sense at all to me cuz that is putting more overheads on the venue.

interesting…well i guess they looking at big profits for a reduce and unattractive line up…

we seems to love doing things in a backward venture what a shame for folks who should be educated!!

why not let 80% of patrons entry free..all three nights..

then you have the corporate sponsor who get their share of the deserved pie..excess passes…all where you turn patrons with pict ids..like they some roadie, manager or extended tech crew…

do we really sit back and think..how will the fest make monies..

sad but our profs folks dont attempt or think out of the box..maybe they need to sit in on the jazz fest promotors and learn something basic on doing showbiz events..

just too much ignorant mind set in Dominica!
