Four-time calypso king Dennison Dice Joseph is the new Champ of the Camp.
He was crowned after defeating a number of calypsonians at the final edition of the Showdown Mas Camp which took place at the Harlem Plaza last evening.
He sang his much loved single “Send Me.”
Soul Puss came in the first runner-up position while Peter Prosper gained the second runner-up spot. Their fellow calypsonian Young Bull got the third runner-up spot.
Last year, Yakima, Soul Puss and Peter Prosper were all crowned Champ of the Camp after a tight competition.
Dice will attempt to gain his fifth calypso crown tomorrow evening when the Calypso finals will be staged at Carnival City.

After reading the comments here I really think people believe that calypso is based on popularity of song and message ONLY. Do you all realize that rendition, melody, articulation, presentation and lyrics are all being judged?
Also, while the performer on the stage the same people complaining the judges cheat were the ones singing and dancing along. Do you really think that by doing that you have the right to comment on the results of the show. Sewo and don’t pay attention but do not post ignorant comments.

Simply put…Pat told the judges who to crown. I know that for a fact. Anway it is a psychological thing. If Dice does not win a crown prior to the show, it will break him down. Already he has to deal with Tasha P coming into the finals with 2 crowns for the season, a very popular Soul Puss who beat him in the semis bad and rumours about his stale lyrics. The only way to boost his confidence was to have given him that crown last night. SImple! It was unfair to the persons who worked hard. Dice is a fantastic artist but not the best man on the night.

Anybody who knows Dice knows that he is no puppet and certainly has no master! He has it all and the others bite the dust. Young Bull can’t sing… Sour Puss messed up his words and just doesn’t have the stage presence of a King. Dice deserved his crown last night. I was there and he was excellent.
Remember Calypso is bigger than Dominica and our King has to represent us internationally also. He needs to have charisma and songs that speak to people not just in DA but to the world. Don’t complain that DA calypso is going no where if you try to put down the only calypsonian that can take it to the next level. Let the man do what he was born to do!

Some people seem to forget that lyrics and melody, presentation, etc was still part of the show last night. Everyone knows that when it comes to singing calypso, Dice is consistent in all these aspects.

I listened to the show and Soul Puss lines were sometimes muffled. It was said it was possible due to his costume. Soul Puss has a good sound but so does Dice. In fact both sounds are in the top three for 2011. That being said though Dice was about 85% and he was rightfully kinged King of The Camp. While Young Bull had the best presentation as it was described, his singing is mediocre even at his best.
In relation to the other tent Mass Champ was superior in performances delivered. Also in the other tent it was obvious that the winner there was pre-selected, winning with a raspy voice over other competition that was at their best. But I believe that was done since Tasha P is the best hope to place in the Top four for the Calypso Monarch and had been the most consistent performer at that tent for 2011.

It is so sad when you guys speak this way. You humiliate yourselves and appear unintelligent or moderately intelligent. This is not about leaving anybody alone or pressing anybody. This is about judging shows right, and not about personalities. Dice is a great calypsonian and I love his songs but when he don’t have what it takes to be the king then it should not be handed to him on a platter. That is the issue here. It is that attitude of favouritism that causes all the problems in this country. A rule is a rule: A law is a law: A yardstick is a yardstick. Those should not change depending on individuals.
Calypso is judged on lyrics, rendition, melody, articulation and presentation and presentation is only 10 points by the way. Soul Puss eat some of his words and Young Bull is a great entertainer but cannot sing. How do you all expected them to win mass camp?
Dice was the one who was consistent in all the areas, he was articulate, he has stage presence, he had great melody. I am not a Dice fan but it was obvious. Calypso is not about the most popular song, or road match, or the song that will make the crowd jump up. When the fans busy singing, partying and dancing while the contestant on the stage performing, the judges are focused on what is going on stage.

I listened to the show via de internet all the way in JA and I was very disappointed with the results. In my opinion the judges need to judge the calypso and not the man singing the calypso. Soul puss better known as Dave Patrick Pascal song was way past dat of dice and he really brought out the message in dat song. Soul Puss don’t give up. While most people are unhappy with the results, Pat and Dice cannot be blamed for the judging. Come on people some of you are being very unfair in the statements that you make about them. Blame the judges. At the end of the day we can huff and puff “the judges decision is final”.

Crowd response, diction, lyrics, melody all play a meaningful part in the final score. I agree many are disappointed in the outcome but it is what it is. Look at what happened last year to the people’s king BOBB.
At the end of the day many of you say based on the radio callers, and bloggers that Bull or Puss should have won. It is important to note that based on the radio and dno in 2009 Labour party would lose the election.

I was at that show, and I must say that this is the biggest “voleur” I ever witness in calypso. Pat walk up and down that stage totally uncomfortable with the announcement he was to make. Even Annie came and whispered in his ears “not to do that” and he still announce Dice as winner. Boy Mr. have a guts!
How comes it took so long for the decision by the judges to be made. Did Pat veto the judges decision? Is his tent so he is really the King Maker. Checker I respect your song more now after witnessing last night. I think you should try to incorporate a line about last night in your song for tomorrow.

I didnt attend the show but we listened to the live broadcast… and by listening alone we could tell that he did not deserve that crown. Whilst interviewing the crowd it was clear that the most popular of that night was between young bull and soul puss.
At some point, we need to start judging these shows fairly.

I was at the show last night. The champ of the camp is Soul Puss, the crowd favorite, Young Bull, Sye third, then Dice. Ferdina, all you had to do was have LIME give Dice his own Scouter. You did not have to mask it by making it the prize and having the judges commit such an injustice just so all you LIME artist would end up with the scouter. Pure blatant vole
The judges were not from the official judging pool from the Calypso Association. Ferdina had nothing to do with the judging line-up. I agree with you that this is the worst calypso decision I have ever heard of and witnessed. Pure voleur

Listen right dice is a great king however, I think Pat organizers of Mas Camp and most Dominicans setting up Dice to win regardless of whether he has a good song or not. Lyrically Soul Pussa beat him. But at the same time lets think about it you have pat aaron writing songs for both Soul Puss and Dice, and so far from what i hear of the second songs Dice second song better than Soul Puss (both written by Pat Aaron) so my question if pat deliberately writing mediocre songs for other calypsonians he writing for, for Dice to win and if that is case, how can we have any healthy competition?
