The new video of four-time calypso champion Dennison “Dice” Joseph is now online.
Dice had completed a video for his 2011 calypso “Send Me”.
He has said his interest in creating a video was inspired by a lack of calypso music videos in Dominica.

I Have watched this video many times and can say that I do enjoy it. I know little about Calypso but I find the big battle that is going on is unnecessary. Let’s just promote our Island and its people, put all political differences aside, stop hating, the guy is an exceptional singer!

I enjoyed listening to the song. It takes me into the Carnival spirit, and the Dominican spirit which is quite unique. Then again I am a Dominican living in England, and I return almost every year. Good show.

Just for the information of those who think Mas Camp is giving Dice more attention than the rest of the crew, in case you are interested in the truth, In life, there are some people who take the initiative and do things for themselves, and there are those who you have to light a fire under them to get them to make a move, sounds familiar?. Do you know how many shows Dice has promoted and produced by himself in Dominica and elsewhere? Herry Royer called and offered to do a video for Dice, Dice who always wanted to do the same, jumped on it, wrote the story line and directed along with Herry, I was only there for the first scene at Mon Pros, as you probably noticed. But also do not forget that it is God not Pat who gives talent otherwise I would probably keep all for myself. Remember I competed for four years and never won the crown, God blesses us in different ways my brothers remember that and give thanks. When I write for an artist, I give each song 101% if it dont pass my test i shelve it. But alas each man has a different capacity, a different level of talent, there are people always pushing that vibe into the ears of the weaker artists and creating a jealousy and hate among artists, sowing discord among brethren, it is not a good thing my brothers, GOD BLESSES EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS (GOD’S)PLAN,if you want to blame somebody for that, BLAME GOD
Hello Pat, do you still believe those words that you attempted to sing many years ago? Continue to write you do a better job there. One thing though….give us a little more variety where the music is concerned. This one sounds like many before it.

Good video but I don’t understand why some of you won’t comment on the lyrical content other than saying ‘Good Lyrix..’
What does the lyrixs say? Same as previous years. Listen ‘Gang Star’. There is absolutely no originality.. a poor story line, no wit … What about the satire that Chalk Dust spoke about…Is it mask?…there is absolutely no creativity. No one can really hold a discussion on that song… What about regional and international appeal. That is a typical calypso that cannot leave Roseau. In a nutshell lyrix is not all about filling a song with big words and rhyming now and then, It is about using simplicity to make huge impact. ‘Send me’ is not strong lyrically and you have the reason. Besides, if Pat is a musician, he should know that his melody phrases are too wordy in that song. This is affecting the singer’s ability to accentuate properly. In other words, the song is not properly metered.
On another note those of you who think that voice has a major role to play in calypso come let us crown Bob every year, Or crown Tarina even if she doesn’t perform. In addition, people like Baron out of Trinidad would never lose a crown. Sugar Aloes would be king for life. A good voice is an asset yes, but at the end of the day, the competition boils down to lyrix, Melody and presentation. So far, ‘Send me’ is deficient in lyrixs and melody so let us wait to see the presentation. Pat, I know you are reading.. I would appreciate if you respond to this. Let us know of the components of Dice’s lyrix that makes it the best in the competition so far…
Since you know so much about calypso and hope that Pat Aaron is reading your post, can you name any songs you have written that have won crowns and/or made it to the finals? We would alI love to see the quality of your work and contribution to the art form from your analysis.
Also, keep in mind that Dice is the ONLY calypsonian that can sing a wordy song with CLARITY. Also, it is not only about his voice, he has stage presence, an excellent presenter and all his songs are honest and sends a message – SOCIAL COMMENTARY WHICH IS WHAT CALYPSO IS ALL ABOUT.
It does not surprise me how little you know about calypso Juge, your statement has no basis and needs to be retracted. You need to learn what lyrics and melody is all about.
Maybe you just don’t get the meaning of this song… but thousands of us do. This video has been viewed over 5000 times on youtube over the past 24 hours. We get it and LOVE IT!
Judge I can sense political resentment in your blog. I believe that if you put aside your political biasses you will accept the fact that calypsos year after focus on political and social commentary and may i add that this is so irrespective of the party in power.
When i listen to the calypso I do agree that the theme is familiar but then can you tell when we had a calypso season in which the government malconduct had not been the dominating theme.The story line chosen is very appropiate considering the political climate in dominica and it very obvious that Pat as always did great justice to the theme in the form of a well composed lyrics. To state that there was no wit and satire is absolutely false. Send me even if dice is no angel send me is satirical and witty.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a ” wordy” calypso. i would think that a song would be considered to “wordy” if and only if the lyrical composition does not jive with the rythymic and melodic composition. As long as the lyrics is in dynamic harmony (Timing ) then thats fine. However one calypsonian may have major problems with one lyrical dynamics whereas another may not. In Dice’s song there is no indication that he struggled with the dynamics. No harm intended i believe that the bob sometimes have difficulties coordinating his lyrics with rythmic patterns. I listened to Bob last year and this year and on numerous occasions i find myselfing editing his songs so as to compartmentalize the lyrical flow. I must say though that this year Ihave seen some improvement in bob’s calypso.
I also agree that the song ‘Send me ” is not necessarily the strongest calypso , lyrically. I will also admit that if Pat had given this song to the observer or anybody the song would not have the same appeal and so this is where the artist becomes the wild card. bob’s song ” Back to the drawing board ” is just as strong or even a bit stronger lyrically but makes . I do hope that Bob can match Dice’s delivery and presentation.
PATO I also think that the BPM should be reduced on the song and hope that if this song is used in the competion that Dice will ask swinging stars to take down the tempo. I reiterate that dice did show great control and his diction was just fineI just think that the lyrical content calls for a more conservative tempo.
To Pat keep doing what you do. I believe that the Judge’s criticism has political undertones. Assuming that Dice’s song does not have satire and wit it is rediculous to suggest that you are incapable of writting a calypso without those noted elements. The “OLD SPEAKER” calypso is loded with wit, satire , sarcasm and realism.
Catchy lines you say!! Listen to the lyrics.. That is what you all need to do. There is a subtle story. This is the meaning of calypso (social commentary).

King of Video, people’s king, king of voice, king in marketing a 4 king man… But making a video at this time is a sign of weakness… his first competition is Quarter Finals. Is he using the video to gain advantage over Bull Shit, Lady B and Acker who are currently creating bigger impact than him in mass camp tent? Do we expect a video from Bob and Sye Soon? What about explosion? This man has the best lyrix in the tent… Why didn’t they make a video of the Ash falling down? The management of Mass camp has no respect for the other calypsonians. Look at how they are treating man like Soul Puss.. this man made mass camp make money last year… to this date he cannot even put a song on air… The calypsonians in this tent are not happy with what is going on …Dice getting all the promotion….what about Bob the 1st runner up last year… If Caressa had gotten a cold Bob would be King..Remember that!

Stupes, Lady B had to be CALLED BACK TO THE SHOW BECAUSE two finalist from last year aren’t singing this year..so Lady B was out from eliminations – therefore that point is MOOT!
Secondly, Dice is a very good performer and has excellent diction, clarity and charisma. It doesn’t matter what Pat writes he delivers it well and makes the song part of him.
The video will not be judged in the finals so how is he using it to get advantage over the others? What is so wrong about him making a video? Even though you hate on him, he will still have the MOST SUPPORT!
Dice wrote and produced this video ON HIS OWN. He is getting more promotion because he works hard and he is creative. He deserves it. No one is choosing to promote him more than others. He is just doing his job well. Other calypsonians can try and compete but once again he is one step ahead of the game. Don’t hate and appreciate what this man is doing for the art form of Calypso.
Can we give praise for the fact that he want to promote art form through video? That is the whole point of the posting. If ‘Tete on Belly’ can make it to the finals and with a poor singer why can’t this one compete?
And what is the issue with Dice getting preferential treatment? HE HAS WON 4 CROWNS FOR MASS CAMP….. WHO ARE THE OTHER WINNER? In reality you invest in your best talent and that is the business in calypso, He is the one most likely to bring a crown. You are a top performer in any industry that you work in and you are likely to get the most investment. IT IS COMMON SENSE.

I think some of you Dominicans are like fowls, when all you eat all you wiping all you beak. The video is great, it is of excellent quality, it is a job well done. However, dominicans, don’t forget that Val “Young Bull” Cuffy was the first ever calypsonian to produce a calypso video in Dominica with his popular hit (can’t remember the name of the song though) “Doh let your woman drive in the front seat, with de bus man.”

Nice Video should Pat give Dice the advantage over the other guys he writes for? Is this a way of telling the other guys “Yow guys you all are trash and NOT king material?” Bob has a great song, Trendsetter has a great song also. technically Pat made it easier for the judges to cut the other guys early.
It’s all about delivery my dear, so no matter the song, it’s the calypsonian, not the calypso.
Pat did not write for de Trendsetter….
But he is in pat’s Camp.
Even if he in Pat’s Camp it does not mean that Pat wrote the song. Plus if you go to calypso finals it is all about delivery on the night of the show. We see it over and over again that great songs make it to the finals and if they don’t deliver they don’t even get placed.

We must build people up more, speak words of encouragement and not dispair. When he does wrong correct him, when he does good praise him for his efforts.

We are all in this world together. Talents are always being made. However, if we remain bias about a certain talent and we cannot look beyond our one sided mind, the talents in Dominica will be surpresssed. Dice is good but we cannot espect him to win the crown all the time. Sometimes he does not even deserved it, but because some people are so racist and i say racist they want to choose him all the time. I like the quality of the video and the lyrics is saying something, but the song does not have much melodie in lines in it.

Great video- the quality is immaculate. Arguably the most talented delivery calypsonian. It is just unfortunate that Dice he can’t seem to stay out of trouble. If this guy could channel his effort into being productive the sky is the limit.
