Too all the beautiful young ladies I congratulate you and wish you the best of luck in this year’s competition. I frequently visit DNO but I have never commented before. After reading everyone’s comments I thought it was only appropriate to give my opinion. I am a former student at the Grand Bay Secondary School, and I represent Dominica everywhere I go. And believe me when I say that I have been all over the world. I must say that I am somewhat disappointed at the negative comment I have been reading about the girls, and all the division and hostility we have towards each other. These young women are brave enough to come perform in front hundreds of people with a chance of maybe one day representing our beloved country on a bigger stage. Let’s not be the ones to discourage our future. Because that’s what they are; Dominica’s future. Let’s be proud of our country’s people not because they are mixed, black, or whatever, but because they are Dominicans. I want to be able to bring my kids back home to show them why I am so proud of Dominica. We all blame the government because we want them to do everything for us. I just want to say that responsibility starts at home. We the people of Dominica are the only ones that can shape our future. Once again I wish the young girls the best of luck. And don’t be discouraged with the results instead support each other and cherish these moments for the rest of your lives.

Okay so Dominicans are honestly going to say that there aren’t and there weren’t any colour issues in Dominica? Also you all are saying this type of discrimination has never occured where individuals have progressed or moved forward in beauty competitions because of their skin colour even hair texture (usually referred to as “nice hair”) in the Commonwelth of Dominica? Not only in Competitions but in the education system and advertorial buisness for example there have been discrimination against blacker or nappy head girls in Dominica. I stand by my statement. I believe its you all with that blind mentality who seem to ignore or pretend that Dominica doesn’t have discrimination. I have nothing against my alma mater CHS. But when I attended 1993-1999 and when my cousins attended prior and aunts attended there was discrimination not only there but in the other Roseau schools especially in beauty competitions. So to those lil black slaves who prefer to stay blinded thats your buisness. Its intriguing how white people for some reason are always pointed out as racist by blacks. If the white man practise this kind of behaviour you all would label him/her a racist but I guess its all fair in DA. *roll eyes* 8)

As for the comment about learning new words I’m deal with numbers. I’m no expert in words but I also notice that you’re not one yourself. Obviously you left school in grade 6. Three comments and lots of spelling errors, I don’t think you’re in any position to dish out advice. Please live that to the more educated commentors. :)

You’re a real jack(*&! You think spelling errors on a blog reflects educational level?

Only a jack(*& would point out spelling errors from another while using ‘live’ when she really meant to say ‘leave.’ Poor Chile! ooops! another spelling error. I really did mean ‘child.’ Please let’s not confuse you any further.

    February 5, 2011

Although it is lovely to see the few contestants for this show, I was a bit disaapointed to see so few participants from the respective learning institutions for young people on the island.

Of all the numerous Secondary Schools and High Schools on the island, you mean to tell me that the show is just going to have a mare (5) girls representing schools on the island of Dominica?!

Last year if I recall right and I stand corrected if I got this wrong, was the figure a similar number, I belive around (6) participants or something like that?

I think it is time we start re-evaluating whether we do in fact have a need for this pageant, whether the structure needs to be changed to come in line with modern day pageants, or perhaps more incentives needs to be adopted in order to attract more schools to participate, not to mention the quality of the judging also needs to improve a long way.

I have suggested this before on this medium and spoken to several other people who also share the same sentiments with me, but my suggestions fell on death ears, as the people involved with such cultural matters tend to be so “closed minded” and unreceptive to positive change.

Anyway, my suggestion is for the Cultural Division to srap the current pageant’s format and possibly change the name from the “Miss Teenage Pageant” to a more inclusive and interesting “Mr & Miss Talented Dominican Teen”.

From recollection and speaking to people, I believe we had teenage males back in the 90s competing in the pageant, but once some body or bodies came up with the idea to just have teenage females and leave out the boys that is what we got.

*[Then we wonder why boys are involved with some of the stuff in our society but there goes, when they are constantly pushed to the back and ignored.]*

Amazingly, quite a few of the other Caribbean islands still continue the healthy tradition to help instill confidence, eloquence, ambition, civic mindedness, nation building and community spirit, drive for excellence, opportunities to maximise talents and educational strengths and more importantly to “bring up,” as opposed to “drag up”, outstanding young (Male & female) teens of Dominica to be ready to take on the world.

They hold pageants like National Teen Splash, Talented Teen of their island, to name a few, with rigorous segments of public speaking, raw talent, intellect, community spirit & involvment, grooming and fashion/cat walk modelling.

That sort of pageant will go a very long way in Dominica, as it will enable student participants to exceed their abilities and improve their fear of public speaking, performing and at the same time highlight talents they never dreamt they had before entering the pageant.

One boy and one girl from each school would be a very nice touch and also reflective of the schools we have in every nook and cranny on the island, as opposed to just a tiny, one handful of participating schools and students.

This will enable our teens to develop themselves in different levels and to ‘leave their best life’, represent DA around the Caribbean at regional pageants and on an international scale, enter pageants where a lot of scholarship money for college/university is up for grabs, for those willing to put in the hard work and dedication to excel.

So this is my idea that I throw out to all readers and the Cultural Division of Dominica. I wonder whether someone in there will respond to my suggestion, as I am not uptimistic? At least I still passed it on.

Blessings and I love you Dominica for life!!!!!

    February 5, 2011

ALL the young ladies are beautiful.

Everyone has a favourite. Personally I’d vote for Amy Auguiste or Stella Alcendor. My vote has nothing to do with which school they attend.

These young ladies are at an impressionable age, so the last thing they would want is for others to be knocking them.

As for the comments relating to skin colour, why are we the black race so racist. Why use derogatory words like mulatto.

    • LET US EVOLVE FOR THE BETTER
      February 5, 2011

Because they just cannot help themselves with the slave mentality that was passed on by their fore-parents to their parents who in turn passed in right on to them, hence the confusion!

How sad is this when a tiny island like DA people are still carrying with the old slave tradition of “colour coding”.

Let’s pray for our people to love themselves in the skins they were born with and not resent others who look different as we were all born in the skin we are for a reason by the creator and besides we are all special really and have a lot to offer the world, once we move past this rediculous colour issue in the region.

Do not adopt that foolishness like in the developed counries as it is not a pretty sight I assure you.

Um, Anonymous, that is EXACTLY what a beauty pageant is about….beauty on the outside. This isn’t a competition to see who is most charitable. LOL! That has, in fact, been one of the main criticisms of such shows – judging candidates on looks only.

Looking at some of the comments and all I can do is shake my head and laugh. #1 For the past years Convent have went up they have won their crown fair n square. Its sad that some Dominicans cannot get over things that happened in the past. #2 To the person that wrote the comment about Convent cannot find mulatto looking girls to go up , how stupid can you be……look at the histoy of teenage pageant and you will see a variety of young women have represented Convent. #3 If CHS, DGS and SMSS are not is this years pageant why are you booraging them on an article that has nothing to do with them. #4 Look at the beautiful young ladies who are going up for this years pageant appreciate, respect and support them. #5 Overall, I will agree that the judging system in Dominica needs a complete makeover but Teenage Pageant is not really the platform where the changes are really needed. Finally, have a great carnival and whoever is crowned miss teen 2011 I hope the Dominican public helps to mold this young woman into a great citizen through their support in what ever she does. It is high time we realize that these shows are not just beauty pageants but a showcase of Dominica’s best young talent and should be taken seriously in order to promote Dominica’s youth.

i agree with dgs not sending anyone up this year…..tooo much bias in this country…..I will not forget the year a young ms. murrain went up and did so well and that crown should have been her’s!!! unsuprisingly it went to the convent high that year which she did not deserved…..i think what the judges fail to realize is that these are young vulnerable young women who work their tails off to put on a good performance on that night. they need to be fair and objective when judging and let the best person win on merit not preference….we all understand that there is only one first place but things need to be done fairly!!!!

    • Troublemaker

The ladies look beautiful and wishing all of them the best of luck on the night of the show. Having attend GBSS now PCSS, I wish Miss Stella Alcendor all the best and she has my full support. Go take the crown sweety. I am somewhat disappointed that Convent, Grammar and SMSS are not participating but I guess they have their reasons. Stella Alcendor for Miss Teen D/ca 2011.

    February 4, 2011

Dearest SWEETSIICK: How could you say that about these beautiful young ladies? Maipuisant!!!

Do you know how these words of yours can scar a young person? You should be praising them instead of degrading them.

If these types of comments is an indication of who you are, I am ready to give you a freee psychological evaluation, because you are clearly suffering from JEALOUSYRITIS. Such hateful remarks about our beautiful young women are not necessary , and smell of insecurity from you – SOURSIICK.

Now that I have evaluated you, I give you permission to crawl back under your callabash. The canals in your brain are too deep to be healed. Poor thing…Now I will have to commit you to a psych ward…Here comes the straight jacket…

maybe convent lacks anything of substance rather than real comeptition. I mean they are there and CHS isn’t so maybe CHS is lacking ….. I’m not surprise this school standard has been detioriating for a while now.

      • To save their skin
        February 6, 2011

I almost literally wanted to tie my hands and not comment. Is it coincidence that at the Queen show as well the majority of those who walk away with the crown have the Convent as their Alma Mater? Yet we talk about the standards at the Convent having been deteriorated? The Convent for over 20 years have had 95% pass and more at the CXC exams; and I am talking facts!. So when we talking about standards let us encourage the other schools to take a leave from the Convent instead of criticising us and commend them for producing the calibre of people who have greatly contributed to our society y and will continue to contribute as long as the walls of the Convent still stand.

        • Ugh!
          February 8, 2011

Well schools like convent can boast of having 95 and 100 percent passes since your alma matter still believes in the selection process. I guess it does not stop at the gate. Chose the best out of what you have to sit CXC under the schools name and of course you will get the 100 percent passes. Its simple logistics!……..And God bless you and all the other public school students who grow up and contribute to society like I don’t know the ministers of government, teachers, nurses, construction workers, farmers, drain cleaners…. get my drift all the invisible people who make life in D.A. possible.

No, seriously…what is wrong with us DA’ans…? Everything has to be “an us versus them…” jesus!!! These are youngs girls making their communities proud, and doing something with their lives…just praise them, please.

If it’s not UWP vs. DLP, it’s Convent vs. this, and DGS vs. that, and St. Martin vs. god knows who, and marigot vs. portsmouth, and this vs. that…and the sun vs the earth…and the fish vs. the goat…give it up already…

We are such a polarized people.

I am DA’an, and I am beginning to think that all we do in DA is drink from the fountain of “HATER AID” IN THE MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT.

    • Hey just giving my two cents
      February 4, 2011

The enemy who has come to “steal, kill, devour and destroy” use his tatics to have us compete against each other in everything worldly. Our Father has created us in his own likeness and image and we are equal in his sight. We just have to understand that some have god given talents that we don’t have. We need to look within ourselves and identify “hero within” and work on bringing out the best in us without being envious of others. We should look at each other and see the beauty in each other. Jealousy, negativity, envious, hatred, intolerance etc and all the negatives in our society is the fruit of the evil one who uses us to do his dirty work for him.

Please emulate the one who has created us so we can sow the spirit of Love, peace, truth, in our lives and our community on a whole

THE judges who are judging these shows are not qualified. they only cheat for who they like…….. they come to the show knowing who is going to win be the show even starts. that’s why st. martin and grammar school didn’t participate.

    February 4, 2011

Convent High School and Dominica Grammar School are conspicuously absent this year. What’s up with that???!!! Convent did not even see it fit to defend their crown??!!!

    • Aaaaa
      February 4, 2011

Because covent isn’t fit anymore to defend a crown… never thought of that? Maybe they don’t like the panel of judges who won’t cheat. lol maybe they are low on the mulatto looking girls there. Its been 10 years and I’m sure that aspect of the school is diminishing or is diminished by now…

          February 8, 2011

Why do people of sound mind and judgement always revert to such foolish means of response. I mean if you do not like what was said then the least you can do is say it in such a way that would reflect you….. then again perhaps your foolish manner is you.

      • Troublemaker
        February 5, 2011

Why do u all insist on hating on Convent……we leave it for allu to get this year allu vex now if we had come is another story. Just accept it and make the girls put on a competition amongst themselves and please do not hate. Everything for allu is a voleh and a cheat. It’s called working hard with a team of hardworking teachers. Allu people just cyah accept the fact that people can do something for themselves and represent a prestigious school. HATERS PLEASE STEP ASIDE

        • To save their skin
          February 6, 2011

The fact that you think Convent sending up mulatto girls is already biased and racist to say the least. Arent fairer looking girls not Dominican as well? Give me a break? We have all colours in Dominica. I am 100% DOminica with roots from Vieille Case, I am fair with “nice” hair and I am more roots than half of dark skinned girls, so who are you to judge!!!!!!!
