“Forces” prevented Soul Puss from shining in calypso final

2011 calypso contender Soul Puss believes a force took over the calypso final last Saturday at Carnival City, preventing him from doing better in the competition.

Soul Puss was regarded as a strong competitor this year but did not do well enough to place in the top four at the end of the calypso final early Sunday morning – repeating lines and executing little energy.

“Maybe my body was there but my internal part wasn’t there,” he told DBS radio.

Puss, who was facing just his second year in the final round of the calypso competition, said he was faced with strange distractions in his dressing room backstage that he is convinced made him falter during his performance on stage.

“I would ask people involved in calypso, that whosoever they have when they’re bringing them to guide them along, do not take away an artiste’s talent by any forms of forces. It’s not right and my talent was taken away on that night by some force which was unexplainable… I sang over verses and I didn’t know I was doing it.

“In finals, there are powers in calypso, powers to deter the talent of other calypsonians,” Soul Puss stated clearly.

He performed “Be not afraid’ and “Singing for supper”.

I mean there is good and evil but now it is going way out of hand in D/ca. Every thing that goes wrong we tend to say is obeah. Other caribbean people classing we D/cans just as the Haitians cuz all we tend to talk about is vodoo, and even bringing those things to the media where persons all over the world can hear. If our head aches is obeah, if our toe knock is obeah!! I don’t see the difference between we Dominicans and those Haitians allu giving a hard time. There is evil and it is real but not everything that happens we have to just say is dat. I was ashamed when i went to several different islands and when i told people where I’m from they saying how D/cans love obeah. It’s better you all stop with that nonsence cuz is dat allu put allu mind on..

Well Caribbean people have every right do, because Dominicans too like to run and do their little obeah. Every thing for them is to go and do someone something. even the school chirren doing it now. SO why you feeling like DOminicans hands are clean? We all know that is not the general population, but way too many people like to go and see who doing them or who they can hold back.

Dominica like to do it and play innocent. For Haiti, they will tell you is their culture, Nigeria too. So if Dominicans do not want to be seen that way, then they need to come out from their bad ways.

    March 9, 2011

I just listened to Matt In The Morning and he gave an explanation he claims Soul Puss gave for his demise on Saturday. Now, I am a child of God and no evil shall touch me but my friends, as sure as there is good there is evil. Some people take this calypso thing very seriously and this is not the first report of evil doings in calypso. I think the calypso association needs to take heed and provide better security for the dressing room area. The fact that any one can enter into another person’s space is not right. Whether or not there was something evil you need to understand the psychological effect on an already stressed calypsonian. It can be compared to the question and answer segment of the queen show. It is inexplicable.

Soul Puss, I would advise you to strengthen your faith so there will be no future occurrences. You sand Be Not Afraid but you were clearly afriad. Live by your words and Be Not Afraid.

Soul Pous, you must stop blaming outside forces for your poor performance and mistakes. Look within your camp first. You speak of “forms of Forces”, who or what are you speaking off. But you must tell the public who within your management team gave you a something to, as they say, prevent persons from wanting you to win.

I agree, no body know what he felt, and the reason he felt as he did. Tooooooo much speculation and rationalization. Soul Puss, review the whole situation, your preparation, attitude, frame of mind, your support system, management etc, and plan for next year. I wish you all the best, I really liked your songs, so “be not afraid”, you can do it.

    March 8, 2011

Soul Puss while your analysis is not impossible I believe it was more a case of pressure knowing you had one of the best songs for the year and could possibly be in the top two after having been in the top four in your first finals last year. In addition, with all the hoopla created for Tasha P by the pundits and others to be the first female monarch prior to the competition even though her second song in particular was of little or no substance may have also impacted your ability to perform. In the end Dice was sacrificed and Tasha P prevailed and the only forces that existed that night were that of the judges to force the hands of history. Come again next year man, the woman thing can now be laid to rest and calypso once again be the focal point!

    • What dat!
      March 9, 2011

Stop the RUBBISH!!! Tasha P was a hands down winner!! You FOOLS belive that calypso is all about politics and that if a song is on any other topic it is not lyrically sound?

we dominicans are to hypocrite. we all know evil exist and sooner or maybe only when it knocks at our door then we admit. Soul Puss is not talking nonesense. there are many exaMPLES OF UNEXPLanable forces in calypso finals. As a writer i have learnt to let evidence speak. let me give you all some history. I was a young teenager backstage with toyota cheerleaders ( hope most of u remember these past famous cheerleaders) anyway that was the calypso finals when scrunter suddenly lost his voice, well i make no apologies for what i am about to say, but Picky had a doll backstage and people were acting strange, people couldn’t move and most of the cheerleaders found themselves crying because we could actually feel a supernatural force over us. Calypsonians were quarrelling walking round and round backstage and no one could remove the man with the doll. I will never forget that night. So trust me it was not the last time and it will never be the last.

      March 9, 2011

I can already hear the lyrics. Maybe something like this:
On the big night, something strange was happening,
strange tings they say backstage was happening,
. Soul Puss lost his internal parts, started singing without a heart,
he repeated verses, like there was no tomorrow,
and sang his last note into sorrow. Somebody tell me what happened on d big night when d Soul sang without a heart, he repeated verses like there was no tomorrow, kaiso turned into one big fiasco,
put d blame on d forces he cried, my body was present,
but something else took my internal part, woywoy woy talking bout d night Soul sang without a heart!!!.

Strikes me as pathetic when we see the progress of White Societies, as opposed to those occupied by Blacks. I suspect the reason for this is our preoccupation with obeah, black magic, voodoo or some version of supernatural manifestations doing as they please in our midst.

That mind you, even as we continue to shout to high heavens our Christian beliefs.

You loss, Soul Puss. Fair and square. Think what can I do next time to pass muster.

Hey Soul Puss, I respect you as a Calypsonian man but you taking this thing to the next level when you think that some evil force caused you to lose man. Just be better prepared next time man. This is a Calypso Monarch Competition and the best prepared contender will win…so ensure that your song is good, it’s content is relevant as well as the lyrics, melody, and any supporting acts/props etc etc.

All the best next time around man and please clear your mind of this superstitious crap man. You of all people, a Rastafarian at heart, should not cloud your mind with such evil thoughts man. Look at this as a learning experience and come better next time.

Soul Puss, understandably the magnitide and pressure of the occasion put a lot of mental stress and fatigue on you. However, you should realize by now that some cold feet and butterflies always come with the territory of performing publicy. I sincerely pray that you acknowledge your mistakes (we all make mistakes, some of us on small stages, others on big ones) and take full responsibility for them. That, I hope, will allow you to gather your nerves, regroup, and refocus you mind.

You have a great point marigotian, As a musican I know say the influence of weed and alcohol can really play on ones mermories when that someone is doing something that deserved undivided attention. My moto is get the job done , then celebrate after.

I remember years ago i was playing with a certain band in the winsorpak. That day was a big day.
The band did not played in a while and people were anxious to here them. Many of the band members decided to get real red to do the show. eventhough the band was sounding tight before, but that day it was a mess. it was the talk about in the town. We had to do a free conscert for the fans for the embarrassment we had put them through. imagine exile one , was one of the performing band.

Soul Puss, check your song again. The evil forces you surround yourself with have come back to haunt you. Remember the longest rope has an end…. so your rope has come to an end. Lol. Start singing positive songs and stop that politicking year after year. All you becoming like stuck records and no one listening to you all. We just enjoying the sweet melodies of the music but not the tasteless lyrics. All you workers (UWP) can never accept defeat honorably, but always blaming someone or something for your defeat, now you blaming evil forces. What a coward you are. I thought you were not afraid. But now we know who are afraid. All those who try to bring down people, have all come falling down, one by one. Do the honorable thing and congratulate the winners and tell your fans you will be back next year. I am surprised at the level you guys can stoop to, but should I really be surprised??? Look at yourself in action on that night, with rosary and all that crap. Man people should really beware of you all. Its sickening to hear you cry now.

WE ARE NOT AFRAID OF THE ENEMIES LIKE YOU AND THE MAS CAMP GANG!!!

    • Truth, Justice, Love, Peace and Unity
      March 8, 2011

So he is a Rastafarian and he is wearing a Crucifix and Rosary? Well, no wonder. Whose side is he on?
As Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “You cannot serve two masters. You will either love one and hate the other” and vice versa. The True God does not mix with also belief in practicing what which is not Christo-centered.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “For God so loved the world that whoever believes in Him might be saved and have eternal life.”
This does not mean that those who love God will always win a competition and also be successful in life. This is not the reason why Our Lord Jesus Christ came to earth. He asks for faithfulness; not success. The only competition which we should strive for and win is the eternal Heavenly prize and crown.
All the same I wish him well the next time he competes. Think positive.
It is understandable that artists will be nervous when competing. Consider that they are in front of hundreds/thousands of people. I have been in a similar position. It takes guts especially when competiting with other people. It is not easy.
Prior to a competition, artists should be resting; get some sleep in order to prepare themselves for the strenuous evening. This will assist them to compose themselves in peace and tranquility. They must not be tired. Otherwise anxiety will set in which will inhibit their performance. No drinking liquor or other such matters. Keep in mind only one person wins the first prize.
I reiterate, good luck next time. I do think you have done your best.
We must not be critical and judgmental. Just wish him all the best for his future competition. We are to elevate people, encourage them and not bring them/their spirit down.
I do agree there are evil forces. However, place your trust in God and God alone. Ask Him to assist you. If you have done your best and another receives the earthly crown, just say: “Lord I have done my best.” Better luck next time.
If God is with us who can be against us? God is greater than any problem we have. Console yourself with this my fellow Dominican. Pay no attention to the critics.
      God bless you!

:?: It is a competition why this society is so dark. enjoy life we win and we loose the next time he has to try harder thats all. keep the witch craft out maybe thats why we cannot succeed in marigot because when some thing go wrong we lay the blame game. Try and help him see where he went wrong on stage and help to improve. i know he is a brilliant writer and he is my friend but tasha won that crown she really deserve it.

But what is wrong with them big men making excuses like that? I never hear Tarina say is evil when she sang three verses or Hunter when the music cut off on him or Leandra who some years ago forgot her song.. I mean come on.. Like I heard a VERY corky interview with Dice on the radio.. Such SOUR LOSERS..
You buckle under pressure thats all.. Soulpuss is now Sourpuss..Stop them excuses thing man.

it seems every time a calypsonian make mishap is forces. prosper himself said that is to much pressure back stage, tasha said the same and those before soul puss could speak about that. tasha was focus with good stage management. the others was fighting amoung their selves who is goin to win who. last year that did not happen because soul puss maybe had another stage manager, different from this year. he performed with all his glory last year, so if their were forces he walked with his forces.

Well de man say that he felt something, the man was singing verses he did not know he was singing. Now that is funny, but it had to be forces, because I was wondering what in the world were these verses coming from. But then again, Dominica itself underspell, So i guess it just pass over you that night. I don’t believe it was nervousness because you accusom of performing on stage. But anyway, I hope you praying that force away. And sing gospel while you are at it.

Soul Puss, I personally rated you as the king, but concluded that my final analysis would have been on the night of the finals. However, having said this, I was really disappointed in seeing that you were the sole calypsonian who made a presentation at the Queen show on Friday night and I ask myself why. Why, Soul Puss did you not deny being an entertainer that night before the finals? You sang at the Mass camp on Thursday, Friday should have been your day for rest and final preparation. Again, on Saturday afternoon, I still see you at Parade of Fashion working and personally, I keep asking myself, what is wrong with him.

Next time please spend some time resting in order that you can be at your best. I really wish you the utmost for the future; you have the potential.

I do not believe in obeah but do know that it exist through jealousy and greed, among others.

Please keep your head up high, for with God’s grace, you can truly make it.

Mais zor! What I hearing with Soul Puss dere nah? He was nervous and was under a great deal of pressure – He should have said that instead. No “forces” were involved. You didn’t do as well as expected; Learn from that experience, and then do better next year.

that is nonsense to say forces stop you from performing. Everyone gets some kind of cold feet before going on stage and i know because i have been in the finals for more than 10 years. The later you sing the harder it is if those are strong because you are in the shadow. the shadow of Tasha killed soul Puss.

  71. HOMESICK
    March 8, 2011

Absolute foolishness! You didn’t perform and you that is all there is to it. Don’t come with that ‘forces rubbish’. You go back to the drawing board and sort out your short coming in order for you to be better prepared for next year if god willing.

Prepare, prepare, prepare like Tasha P did.

  77. hmm
    March 8, 2011

    Padna get really.
The force which prevented you from performing was the master who continues to make a puppet of you guys, using you all to push his agenda, ask PETER PROS.
You guys are given songs to sing that you sing without conviction but you must do it because you have to dance to the masters tune.
You guys were beaten by a well prepared, well groomed young lady who sang from the heart on issues she believed in,she sang with conviction, true social commentary.
Soul, you guys will continue to “bust”, as they say in Trini, until you all realize that social commentary doesn’t always have to be politics.Dice,Prosper,Bob,Sye,Soul, you all were victims of the same problem, busting and singing over lines, the question is what do you guys have in common? The answer, the same puppet master.Sorry but that’s the reality so please stop embrassing our country in the eyes of the world with this obeah nonsense.

while i may disagree bout this obeah story/ forces i really would like to kn o why are we afraid to or hate to hear and see the truth when its right there staring at us in our face? just because Pat Aaron has the balls to write about it in song he’s a puppet master? The man has talent and he uses it to bring forth what we’re afraid to admit , it is you the hypocrites who are embarassing this country!!!!

    • maindesk
      March 8, 2011

Soul Puss claims forces of the unknown you claim forces of a master so both of you are just the same silly jokers. In competitions there is failure and loss. That is all.

    • Puppet they like

Now who is talking the guy said ” forces” did mentioned “obeah” so what a you talking about and as for vitims you may not want to hear what is going on around you maybe you a part of the problem but that do nto mean they cant sing about the issues that have a lot to do with corruption you all speak about TRINIDAD canival what do you think rthey sing about it’s politics and whatever else at the time

And let me tell you the second song didnt get Tasha P the Crown it was the first song because if you research the second song you will find a similar song that was sung a while back but “Let our children be children” that was the one that gave her the
brake and it was well done well presented and if those guys didnt mess up I wouldnt want to be in any of the judges seat it would be tough and that’s the real reality . so when you want to take on who you believe to be their Master dont include these artist they are just entertainers .so stop using the show to make waves.. .

SoulPuss didnt measure up I had Trasha P and Soul Puss right up their because of the songs they had positive messages unfortunately it didnt work out that way we just have to wait and see what will happen in 2011

Best you own up like Peter Pros, I would have more respect for you…many calypsonians before you have messed up and not crap about ” forces”,….this has been a log carnival season and it took a toll. You did not perform so well in the second round…this is only entertainment…lighten up…there are more important things than this. It was a good show, and after all Peter Pros did shine….lol
