Germina Jno Baptiste – a new Dominican star shines

Germina Jno Baptiste who was born in Dominica Commonwealth heads the Hated 2 Death cast in a leading role as Princess. This is the first time any actress from Dominica plays a leading role on the big screen.

Most actresses originating from Dominica have had only support roles; actors such as Herny Wilcoxon, who was born in Roseau Dominica in 1905, was the only male born in Dominica to have played lead on the big screen in Cecil B DeMille’s films, also serving as  DeMille’s associated producer on his later films. The other person was Prince Ital Joe, born in 1963, who did not play a lead role; he played a drug dealer from Jamaica in Steven Seagal film Mark for Death.

Jamaican movies have always been centred on drugs and violence which to most of the past and present film makers is the USP (unique selling point) for their movies.

Times are now changing, thanks to Collywood, a new Jamaican movie outfit a production company led by Jamaican-born Junior Hart. This new phenomenon is fast creating a new-style movie industry for Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean.  Collywood is much like Bollywood movies, or the African version of Nollywood and Hollywood.

After dubbing the company Collywood Jamaica, the Jamaican Hollywood, Junior Hart the CEO, has made Jamaica his home for the past 2 years after returning to St Elizabeth, his birth place, where he started to make and produce movies based in the rural parts of St Elizabeth known as the “The bread basket”. Hart has now completed 5 Epic feature movies in 2 years plus a new soap series which will be licensed to terrestrial and cable TV around the Caribbean and Africa.

HISTORIC MOMENT FOR ST ELIZABETH

The first of these epic Jamaican movies to be released by Collywood is titled “Hated 2 Death” which is due to be premiered on the 2nd July 2011 at Everglades, Parrottee, Black River St Elizabeth. This will be an historic moment for St Elizabeth as Hated 2 Death will be the first movie ever to come out of any deep rural parts of Jamaica. The movie will be the longest running time movie ever made in Jamaica/Caribbean which is just over 2 hours long and consist of 3 stories based on true life events. One of them being the murder of 2 Lesbians Phoebe Myrie and Candice Williams who were brutally murdered in 2006.

The majority of the cast members are from Jamaica St Elizabeth apart fro Gemina Jno Baptiste the first Dominican to act in a Jamaican movie. The Jamaican cast were all termed unemployed with no prospect of finding work anywhere due to the economic climate in Jamaica. Junior Hart signed them to Collywood where its Management is based in the UK. All the cast members now have an exciting career to look forward to in this new emerging movie industry from Jamaica. “We are looking to sign more people from all over the Caribbean to Collywood,  says Hart, as time goes on and provide them with ongoing employment, the Jamaica/Caribbean has no ongoing movie industry, and Collywood will be investing heavily in Jamaican/Caribbean talent and creativity, where positive stories in our culture can be told”.
