Organizers of Fete St. Isidore at San Sauveur say they are satisfied with the level of participation at the Monday morning parade and mass but are calling for greater involvement by villagers in the planning of the event.
“In terms of what captured the true meaning of the feast of St. Isidore, I think that turned out pretty well…..to me that epitomizes what the feast of St. Isidore when you see the village people dressed in traditional wear, dressed in you know, their nice ‘dan dan’ as we like to say carrying the evidence of what they’ve done for the year in terms on their farms, in their fields, in terms of the produce that they’ve been able to realize,” Dionne Durand, one of the organizers, told DNO shortly before the scheduled appearance of WCK, the main entertainment event of the day.
“But it would be remiss of me” says Durand “if I didn’t put on record that this is something we are trying to do for the entire community….I mean the communities of Good Hope, San Sauveur and Petite Soufriere. So, in terms of the planning of the event, we would like to see a little more participation from the villagers”
Durand is sounding the call for residents of the tri-village community to “get on board” next year and make the celebration “a true representation of what the Feast of St. Isidore used to be”.
One of the highlights of the week-end long Fete St. Isidore event was the Miss Isidore pageant on Sunday which was won by Ayesha Nicholls of San Sauveur.
First runner up was Kerlincia Bernard of Petite Soufriere and the second runner-up was Lina Nicholls of Petite Soufriere.
A La Peau kabwit competition kicked off the celebrations on Friday night with ‘Parish-wide participation’ including representation from Castle Bruce.
According to Durand, Fish Night, a signature event of Fete St.Isidore, “went well” on Saturday.
She says the idea of a food fair as suggested by Miss Isidore 2012, Ayesha Nichols, will be explored next year as organizers, in response to concerns by patrons, seek to fill the lull between the morning mass and the main entertainment event in the evening.
” We welcome ideas and that’s the thing about more people coming on board because I think the more people that would come on board, the more ideas we’d generate and we’d be able to do more.” says the member of the SanSauveur Fete Isidore Committee which has been praised for reviving and improving an event that was dying.
I was only able to attend on Monday afternoon, and I took along some children from Castle Bruce. I would like to say a HUGE thank-you to the fishermen who took us all out in their boat for a tour of the bay. The children absolutely loved every second of it – many of them had never been in a boat before – and we ended the afternoon by cooling off in the river, with some of the children actually jumping in from the bridge. We all had a fantastic time! Thank you again. I wish there were more local daytime events like this locally with activities for children.
I am calling on the people of Good Hope, San Sauveur and Petite Soufriere to show more support to the Isidore Committee. It is “our feast”, not the committee. The proceeds from the various activities and events go towards the renovation and improvement of the catholic church and for erecting a toilet for the church. The money raised will also help to improve the standard of living of the three communities. I was heartbroken to see the same set of people doing everything. Through cooperation and unity we can make things happen. Let’s change our mindset petty jealousy and work together to improve our communities.
Was anything said in memory of the people who lost their lifes last year about the same time – people it is not only about fete – lets take time remember
The landslide occurred in 2010 and at the church service in 2011 they were remembered.
I would like to say congratulations to my lovely goddaughter Ayesha Nicholls. Job well done, you made us all proud. I am so happy that the feast went on without any interruptions. God bless the villages and I do hope it is even bigger next year.
