Roseau, Dominica – (June 17, 2016) The Government of Dominica provided concessions valued at over US$60,000 for the filming of the Discovery Channel’s American Tarzan , an endurance adventure show which premieres at 10 pm on July 6, 2016. Locally, the Discovery Channel can be viewed on Marpin 2K4 channel 19 and Digicel Play channel 55.

A forty member crew arrived in Dominica in March this year and spent 8 weeks scouting for and filming American Tarzan. Assistance was provided to the crew in facilitating entry and exit of equipment and supplies, obtaining the necessary film permits and licenses and establishing medical evacuation plan if needed. Preliminary estimates indicate the film crew spent in excess of US$300,000 on local goods and services while on island, and contributed approximately US$1 million in economic activity to the local economy.

Dominica will receive extensive television coverage once the show premieres to millions of Discovery Channel viewers worldwide, and through rebroadcasts of this episode. The Dominica episode is the inaugural episode of American Tarzan and will feature seven competitors enduring various challenges across Dominica’s rugged terrain to earn the title of American Tarzan.

Director of Tourism Colin Piper commented, “This series and the promotional opportunities it provides to Dominica are precisely what DDA hoped for when we developed, staged and distributed our Nature Island Challenge; certainly American Tarzan and the Discovery Channel now can showcase the beauty and charm of Dominica globally.”

Initiatives to support filming in Dominica are facilitated through the Dominica Film Office in order to meet the Government’s objective of stimulating economic growth through creative industries.

Ever nation, every state in the U.S. and many cities in each state in the U.S provide tax credits for filming. Canada is so generous with its tax credits that many U.S. film production companies film in Canada. Dominica is, wisely, doing the same thing. The benefits from such tax credits is the dollars that the film crew spend in the country/city: including hotels, restaurants, catering, shopping, hiring of locals on the set, etc. People, please stop being so ignorant.

The level of stupidity and negativity in some of these comments is staggering. Did some guy say some ‘episodes’ of pirates of the caribbean were filmed in Dominica. lmao no wonder he couldn’t recognize any of the locations. I recognized most of them despite all the editing (Like that part where they’re shooting arrows from the set in soufriere to the one in titou gorge). It was fun boasting to my friends overseas while watching the movie. Plus there was a disney highlight and a few others where they talked about the filming in d/a. The trailer for that new show is already being spread virally by Dominicans all over the world on social media. Bragging rights yo!

Here we go again, Skeritt can give India thousands of dollars, he can give a TV company thousands of dollars while the people of Marigot are begging for a new hospital. On the hills of all the tension in Marigot and Dominica by extension, if the timing is not to bring more anger to the people of Marigot, then what is. According to Spider the country is going down slowly. What other way to force civil unrest and blame Mr. Linton and the people of Marigot for the unrest in the country. Skeritt is no fool, he heard of the people’s intentions in terms of their next move which might not be pleasant, therefore, all he is saying indirectly, you all are not the boss, I am. He mentioned at a meeting in England last night that the Marigot hospital was relocated and $1.5 million were spent on the relocation, he knows that is a lie, again a another move to anger Linton and the people of Marigot. According to Coipel, the longest road has a bend, the longest rope has an end.

Off course the government was always going to support this. These Red labor baboons see this as a very rear opportunity for their underdeveloped pathetic island to get some exposure. They are secretly hoping that this will put Dominica on the map and save their ever sinking tourism industry which has been in decline since they came into office. They think that this film will make up for Mr. Tonge’s shortcomings after his failure to properly maker the island. They think that this will be a cheap shot while they mask themselves in their laziness but they lie. After this is all said and done not even a complementary doctorate their Labor cabinet will get because Punjab is in India, not America. This exposure will count for nothing. Simple question, what have we gotten since Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed here? Optimism is good but you have to be real also. I’m waiting for my laborite followers to dish out the criticism below; feel free

How do you say you are Dominican and bad mouth the place so much just because you don’t like the Prime Minister? To say “These Red labor baboons see this as a very rear opportunity for their underdeveloped pathetic island to get some exposure”. So now DA is pathetic and underdeveloped the same DA you were born and raised in. If you don’t have nice things to say don’t say it because if for anything that same Dominica would stand on your behalf and welcome you home if America rejects. Don’t forget where you came from. Stop sitting in Florida spewing nonsense out of your mouth. Guess what? I don’t vote for no party in DA so that one was free of charge.

Your concept of economic stimulation is skewed. By us you’re thinking small as in me or mine. A $60,000 was not cash given it was services provided for free such no VAT on the import of film equipment, making medical services available etc. those services cost money, in turn the film crew spent $300,000 and stimulated 1 million in economic activity, that how an economy grows. The very same Dominicans who criticize the government about lack of growth are in fact the ones shrinking the economy by spending money earned of sent to them to Dominica in other countries such a St Lucia and St Martin, you basically growing those economies and shrinking DA economy then complaining at the same time. There are some people who love buying goods from other countries other than from their own country. You know, this has been going on for years.
Canadians do the same, if not most of them. They shop in the US. Those who reside close to Buffalo, NY go to Buffalo. Others go to New York City. Those stores offer sales and widely advertise them. There is a Friday the US stores named “Black Friday.” It has spread to Canada.
Some shop on Amazon. This contributes to business closure and loss of jobs. That is the type of world we now reside in. Then they blame the government. Broadminded people know better.
I heard on the News that more people shop On-Line than in the local stores. They get lazy too and also bank On-Line. Not me, as long as a I have my two healthy feet, thanks be to God. I vow never to shop or bank On-Line.. In any case, it is not always safe. A hacker who was imprisoned said, people are foolish to do business on the internet. He knows best!

Clearly no understanding of how promotion works. If Rihanna put wck on a song it is likely they would do it for free but collect royalties for the rest of their lives. Probably the most they would ever get off one song. We Dominicans don’t understand long term sustainability. We suffer from myopia and tunnel vision. It is the same issue driving the crime rate sky high. People want things but don’t want to put in the work. Some people will steal $10,000 for a one off large payment, whereas if they were to work hard and invest in themselves they would earn over 5 times that in a year every year, if smart enough. They do not need us or Dominica, we need them. We need the promotion. $60k for that kind of promotion is priceless. Especially when the govt did not have to pay in cash. The amount of money it could generate in the long term could exceed a mere $60k and could potentially put money even in your pocket. Short termism is embedded in you. But not just you. Think long term

Dominica will not get publicity if the show does not say that filming was in the Nature Island of DOMINICA and give the location of the island. I have seen events filmed in Dominica and shown on American television and they never indicate that filming was in Dominica. I hope the DDA insists that the name and location of Dominica are included in shows/events filmed in Dominica by foreign collaborators. The idea of promoting Dominica through filming of mass television events in Dominica for overseas broadcast is very good once the island is identified in the shows.

    Unbelievable!

Why should Dominica government give East Caribbean Currency to the tune of $162,000.00 dollars to the Discovery Channel; when the show is supposed to have a producer? The producer is supposed to cover his/her cost. What’s the purpose, for this, when it’s the Discovery Channel who should pay a fee for using the sites in the country for their purpose.

I smell a stench, something is wrong: To talk about how much money they spent on the island does not even make sense, that goes along with the territory, if they remained here and filmed anywhere in the United; in any State, they would have to pay for filming even on the streets. Something is really wrong with Skerrit, and his circus clowns!

The Discovery Channel has more money than Skerrit has in the Dominica treasury, how can a bankrupt nation pay money to company richer than the country?

    • Mystic

Since I have no intelligence, and do not know what Dominica will benefit from this; state what you believe you will benefit from it!

If you are looking for free advertisement you will not get it!

Remember Pirates of Caribbean? Some episodes were filmed in Dominica; when it was screened in Canada, my cousin Kathy, and went to see the movie, we thought there would be some publicity given to Dominica, I did not recognize one single place as a Dominican that I could say that’s Dominica.

We waited to read the credits at the end of the movie; within a split second I saw the word Dominica, with no actual information about Dominica. Let me tell you, there is nothing Dominica will benefit out of that; the production company shall be the only benefactor, making money of their sponsors of the program through commercials!

        Stick that in your craw!

When we condemned or express dislikes of a person comment, we need to have something better to present, to use against the person comments in order to successfully refute their thoughts and ideas.

So, I look forward to a single comment from just one single foe who intends to give thumbs down: Facts, and Elizabeth, you are not allowed to comment, because I know what you two ole queen will say; it will not be kind, keep out of this; okay!

I will only have something nice to say when whatever prove to be productive. If you all want to advertise Dominica that is not the way to go. The appropriate thing to do is buy Television time as the Jamaicans, and even small St. Kitts does on prime time television programs.

If you all do not know how to do it ask Sam Rafael he will tell you, since I’ve seen where he bought space on national prime television advertising his business prior it its devastation by Erika.

A woman even won a trip to Dominica at Sam’s expense. Giving almost two hundred thousand dollars to Discovery Channel, is not going to help; and I do not care who want to call me out of my name; go right ahead, call me a dog if you all wish I do not care! That will not touch a single vein, or a muscle in my body.

I have a profession where I could be in Dominica a long time ago where I could invest in some sort of Electronic manufacturing business, but under Skerrit regime that will never happen!

That Mountain Chicken Carpaud (Crapo) Mentality Sly Eye Indian doctor of nothing Roosevelt Skerrit:

Hhahahahahahahahahahahahahahah: must go first, but since you all love his dimples more than work to earn a living: Keep him in power, and be contented to get a dollar from every five years; and remain poor.

    • UDOHREADYET
      June 17, 2016

Telemaque… please read the article clearly, it wasn’t well written but the $60,000 is not direct financial assistance… it for services the film crew would pay for otherwise, this is how place like NYC and Hollywood attract filmmakers by reducing their tax and providing security and medical services.
The government did not charge the film crew VAT tax on the import for the film equipment, they also provided medical assistance if needed the total cost of the services provided was about $60,000.

At the same juncture the film crew spent $300,000 locally and stimulated the economy by over 1 million.

Dominicans in turn should NOT be spending their money in St Martin and St Lucia and Trinidad because that is what shrinks the economy. The idea that goods elsewhere are better is a myth and if in fact some goods are better then the right parties (stores) should be notified. this is what people in teh US do with their stores if they don’t have a product.

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        June 17, 2016

You have even made it more plain so that everyone can see another of Skerrit’s blunders. Do you believe if they were filming on any street in London, or any place in America, the State, or the city of London would give them money to take care of money they spent to take of themselves?

Now you informed me; the reason behind it is even worst than I thought. Now assuming the government begged them as usual; to come to Dominica for the precise purpose of doing something specific in the interest of the nation, and prior to their arrival that was stipulated, that would be a different situation altogether.

We could consider that quid pro quo! But in this case that is simply giving away of the poor taxpayers dollars.

    • skepticalone
      June 17, 2016

Some reality. Financial support seems to have been mostly tax breaks and other support rather than direct cash. It is common to assist production companies in covering some costs and usually islands will fight with other for the privilege. The tax breaks given, and logistical support given allowed Discovery to come here and spend considerable money in the private sector!! Buses, security, hotels’ restaurants etc etc etc. Finally when this show airs it will bring exposure to Dominica above and beyond the many people who came to work on the show and will return as ambassadors.
The same kind of people who bash everything for politcal reasons will complain that Dominica is never of TV, that we don’t spend enough on marketing etc. There is truth to that. However when something positive happens they can only criticize and blame. They have no better ideas that are realistic and will bring short to medium term gains. “Build and airport” is all they want to scream. Man up, sometimes…

      • “Roseau, Dominica – (June 17, 2016) The Government of Dominica provided assistance to the tune of over US$60,000 for the filming of the Discovery Channel’s American Tarzan”(DNO).

The way I interpret that in the quote above is simply this way, Dominica government (Skerrit the Dictator); gave away sixty thousand dollars in United States Currency to Discovery Channel: an equivalent of East Caribbean Currency totaling approximately one (162,000.00) hundred sixty-two thousand dollars, and no matter how you try to minimize or spin it, the facts can’t be changed; it is what it is!

@Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque “The Government of Dominica provided assistance to the tune of over US$60,000 ” as opposed to “The Government of Dominica provided $60,000 “. You try to come off as well educated but your lack of reading and comprehension skills give you away. That and your inability to write anything that can be considered a coherent argument. Your rhetoric (at best) is grammatically deficient gutter politics.

Have you heard of concessions before? I wonder if you and your family (if you have one) ever get along. For you seem to be the type who loves being heard. Grumpy old guy.

If your stupid comments pertain to me, don’t you think you are less intelligent than a jackass? You do not know me, you have never seen my face, how can you describe me as a grumpy old man?

        Are you an idiot?

Have you ever dealt with me on a personal basics which give you any reason to deduce from my expression that I am grumpy?

Let me expose the jackass you are: A grumpy person is someone who is bad-tempered or sulky! Let me educate you some more. A sulky person is an individual who has a bad temper, resentful, and refusing to be cooperative, or cheerful. Have you ever dealt with me in person which caused you to form such opinion of me?

If that’s the conduct of your mother, father and you all three of you need to get cultured, and get a kindergarten education; because you are an idiot.

If is one thing for sure a computer will is exposed those of us who did not spend much time in Kindergarten!
