CASTRIES, ST. LUCIA – The sweet sound of Cadance is expected to pour all over the seventh edition of the annual Oktoberfest En Kweyol this weekend.

The event, which will be held at Samaans Park from 2pm, Sunday October 5, will be headlined by Cletus Halibut Abraham originally of Belles Combo of Dominica.

Hailed as one of the greatest Cadance bands to come out of Dominica, with Halibut as the lead singer the band delivered memorable Creole hits such as “Qui Ca Ou le vieux”, “En Meme Tou la”,”Apres Carnival” and “Mal Elever”.

Additionally, their chant of “Mizik A -Nous” has become an anthem of sorts of the World Creole Music Festival in Dominica. Arriving here on Thursday evening, Halibut says the feeling was nothing short of nostalgic. “It was 35 years ago that I performed here with Belles Combo and now I am back as a solo artiste and I am really looking forward to it,” he says.

A champion of Cadance music, he says fans can expect to hear a number of the hits from the past on Sunday. “Cadence music was the first electrified music from Dominica and this is what I enjoy doing and love to see persons dancing, singing and enjoying themselves to Cadence music,” Halibut says. “Cadence music has never had a negative vibe it can be deep, it can be fun, it can deal with social issues. So on Sunday I just want everyone to come out and have a nice time with myself and the rest of the performers,” he says.

Other performers hitting the Oktoberfest stage on Sunday are Lighting Stars, DYP- Saint Lucia’s number one party band and indigenous folk groups Secret Solo Band, Avot Sevis and Mamay La Kaye. There will also be performances by the artistes from the Piton Soca Starz camp.

For most persons however, the highlight of Oktoberfest en Kweyol is the international beers.

This year there will be a wide range to sample. These include the staple at the event Paulaner- the special edition Oktoberfest beer out of Germany. Then there is the big bottled Parbo Bier Djogo from Suriname, Jillz Cider from Holland, Strongbow Apple Ciders Honey, Affligem Blond and Brand Zwaar Blond of Belgium and Guinness Extra Stouts from Ireland.

Oktoberfest En Kweyol will also feature other products from WLBL, including Heineken, Piton Beer, Piton Radler, Guinness, Carib Beer, Desperados, and Strongbow Gold Ciders. Oktoberfest will also feature a wide array of sumptuous creole food as well as art and craft. The event is seen by many as the official start of Creole Heritage month in October and is endorsed by the main organizers of Creole Heritage month activities, the Folk Research Center.

It is also supported by the St. Lucia Tourist Board, alongside corporate partners The Wave 94.5, Radio Caribbean International, Landmark Events. Wave Rider and Paradise Water, the official water of the festival.

Importantly look at the organization behind lUCIA,s fest – international sponsors – in our case what is being advertised is three nights of pulsating music , no creative thinking of adding value to the WCMF like St. Lucia is doing with theirs; they have attached an international beer tasting event that will grab the interest of beer drinkers around the globe; so when it is over for them the beer drinkers from all over the world would have enjoyed a tropical cultural island which is likely to turn into more stayover visitors in the future. In Dominica after the three days of fete and more fete there isn’t anything tvisitors have o take back with, nothing of added value is achieved.

BA St Lucian what you say?Dominica has nothing that St Lucia wants? You don’t want Kubuli because you do things differently in St Lucia? So why you need to have a creole music festival too? Or a journal kweyole too? Or a literary festival too? All AFTER Dominica started it? All you obviously copy cating Dominica and you coming on this site and say we telling lies? You need to be honest with yourself and if you cannot post something uplifting don’t post devisiveness and rubbish.

Ohh Please don’t be too ignorant, Creole Heritage month has been in St. Lucia for a very long time since in the 80s as far as I can recall, it is part of their culture just like ours SMH, and who said they have a festival that can be measured with ours??? And do you actually think they took Jounen Kweyol from us…they basically have the same culture the only difference is we have independence in November…So please don’t be ignorant.. Dominica and St. Lucia are very alike, I got a rude awakening when I lived there in the 90s …

Simple, only in Dominica we like other(s) things more than our own. Other people take pride in what they have (own). Look at the headline sponsors of many of our local event.. CARIB (not Kalinago), HEINEKEN and I dare say PITON as well. And not forgetting BLUE WATERS ( not Loubiere, Trois Piton or NAture’s Water. ( )

Don’t get me wrong, I am not anti products from owr sister CARICOM countries at all…..Just saying.

St. Lucia is free to import Kubuli beer if it wants to. However, St. Lucia has its own Windward & Leeward Brewery since 1975, part of the global Heineken empire, which could have been Dominica’s if we hadn’t farted around at the time. That brewery produces the ubiquitous Heineken- as well as the local brand Piton (plus Guinness stout under licence). Personally, I prefer our own Kubuli but that excellent beer would have a tough time against Heineken, especially taking into account the distribution costs from Dominica to St. lucia.

Good luck to one of our many ambassadors, representing Dominica and making us proud a long time ago, contrary to what the johnnies come lately are claiming. We been placed on the map by many persons and I have been proud of being Dominican many, many, moons ago. Therefore I felt offended by persons or party who think they are so self serving and talking to us like that, bear in mind we are all over the Globe many more than in Dominica, and surely not that gullible. We love St Lucia, and wish them success during their festival, and invite all St Lucian to come to the nature Isle and enjoy the real W.C.M.F. My ST. Lucian friend warned me that if we do not cherish our W.C.M.F. they will steal it from us, very honest but I do not want that to happen. Lets all make sure that does not happen at all!!!!!! I am a proud Dominican many, many moons ago. Are YOU?????

      • Jefferson
        October 4, 2014

Mr. B A Lucian said they do things differently. I guess he meant like the disgraceful empty crowd watching an international cricket game at Beausejour compare to bachannal Windsor Park Stadium always with a huge crowd.
Mr. B. A Lucian also said they don’t want anything that we have. Ok that’s his perogative. But who said we were giving away anything that Dominicans cherish like the pulsating and vibrant WORLD CREOLE FESTIVAL and entertaining CREOLE IN THE PARK?
I hope Mr B. A Lucian clarifies himself and stop pitting islands against each other.
