Ladee Bee, Royette, De Rose fail to make make semis; Dice and 19 others in

Royette

None of the three calypsonians who were included in the quarter-final round of the 2011 calypso competition after others dropped out, will be a part of the semi-final round on February 20.

Lady Bee, Royette and De Rose were last week given a spot in the quarter-finals after three other calypsonians decided to step out of the race, but their performances at the quarter-finals on Saturday evening did not prove well enough to put them further in the competition.

But four-time Monarch, Dice, lived up to his fans’ expectations, and sang his way to the semi-finals.  Young Bull, who made his return to the calypso competition this year, and Peter Pros, who made his calypso debut in last year’s competition, are also among the 20 calypsonians selected to make it to another stage of the contest.

Also, Tasha P, Leandra, Sugar S and Lady Star were among those chosen from the 32 contenders to advance to the next round.

Soul Puss, Observer, Explosion, Bobb, Sye, Exposer, Benno, Trendsetter, Third Eye, Boople, Mighty Lugas and Checker are part of the 20 confirmed for the semi-finals.

While I like Dice style and love that song ” Send Me”, I was in my bathroom singing away when I realised the message in the song, its like saying even though I am guilty of the same crime just send me. How can sin correct sin? Two wrong cannot make it right.

If you claim to listen you will understand because apparently you don’t, that yes he claims to be guilty and “would not dare” but its the people who want him to go and sing because they want a liberator. The people are the ones who choose him because he is “a bold face singer” unlike the others who see and know but are afraid to sing and “face a leader and call corruption by its name” and to “tell pastor and priest here’s wrong now practice what you preach”

A- HOLE, WHEN HE SAYS THAT HE IS GUILTY TOO, HE IS TALKING ABOUT HIS WRONG DOINGS WHICH WE ALL HAVE. HE NEVER SAID HE WAS GUILTY OF THE SAME CRIME OF OTHER SINNERS. READ YOUR BIBLE.”YE WITHOUT SINS CAST THE FIRST STONE.” THAT DOES NOT MEAN I HAVE COMITTED MURDER, RAPED, STOLEN,OR TAKEN PART IN CORRUPTION LIKE YOU DID. CHEW ON THAT!

Fanatic, If its one thing you can’t teach me is the bible, I can show you things in the bible you never know was there, so stick to calypso. now stop for a while and listen to the lyrics, even though I am guilty of breaking the law of the land, overlook that and send me to correct those that are breaking the law of the land. ( I am guilty too) meaning I am guilty of the same offence. Don’t be blinded by your support.

          February 8, 2011

He is not saying that he will correct anyone because he is guilty too, though his guilt is not of things similar to that of the leaders who impact more people but rather he points out their wrongs as seen by the people who are sending him. By the way what is he guilty of or rather what impact has the wrong he has done had on you or society as compared to the wrongs of our so called leaders?

All of u are all wrong. you all do not know anything about what calypso really is and the history of calypso. even the history of da calypso and the calypso association. They actually do not like dice and are bias when it comes to him. let me make it clear here that i am a fan of true calypso and no one calypsonian. but the calypso association has removed and added certain rules just because of dice. like no acapella. sit and go back in time and if u are not bias u will see the truth. its my first time writing here, i am usually very amazed at the comments and vow not to write, but when it comes to true calypso which i love dearly, i have to write. we need to understand the dynamics of things and be objective in our discourse, note i write discourse and not disscussion.

    • Anonymous
      February 8, 2011

Acapella was not removed. If a calypsonian chooses to sing acapella he should do so in the same melody and rhythm he was singing the song to in the previous verses and choruses. What actually happens is that both these elements are normally broken and the judges have no choice but to deduct points/score lower in these areas. Get your facts straight. There are many musicians on the judging panel to notice the difference in tempo when an individual switches to acapella and back.

      Know your facts!

      • Brit
        February 8, 2011

Anonymous you and Ossie need a little English lesson, no offence intended but it is time that we Dominicans know that ACAPELLA means making music with your voice, while EX-TEMPO( which is what the calypsonians do) is cutting off the band music to speak part of your song instead of singing it. The world is listening and reading to you and OSsie making that silly mistake over and over. Like I said no offence intended, look it up if you are in doubt.

Ozie has lost his influence on his audience just as the church has lost it’s influence on modern society. Before I knew about calypso, I relied on this man’s judgment for almost every aspect of the art form. In recent times, he has become so DICESOMONOUS that he forgets to even mention the simple criteria like lyrix, Melody, Rendition and Presentation that are necessary for taking anyone to the final. The man has become very subjective and his commentary has lost balance, fairness and objectivity. There is nothing wrong in a commentator disclosing his or her favorite calypsonian, take for instance , Mertle always say that caressa is her favorite but I have never heard her gone overboard to even suggest changing the rule to accommodate this man. Ozie must remember that he is not in a rum shop keeping a conversation. The whole world is listening sir. You have lost my respect and many who I have asked in the past to follow your commentary. Q95 and Kairri are better stations to listen for fair calypso commentary..Bye Ozie.

    • ras
      February 8, 2011

and i think Ozzie is entitled to his opinion, even as a commentator.

    • truth be told
      February 8, 2011

Are you calling yourself judge or juge? If it’s the former then you are a terrible one. Just remember that Ozzie is not alone. Many other Dominicans are also fans of the young man’s talent. Let’s remember that over a short span of years he has won 4 crowns, 5 in my book (year of tarzan). He is one of only 3 to win 3 consecutive crowns and that the one who did before him, did so 30 years before, which means that over that 30 year period there was no other, of all the calypsonians who spanned those years, who were more talented than him. You may have your ill feelings towards the man but you have to respect and appreciate his talent. Hayi Chien Di Dah’n blanc

      • Vibes
        February 8, 2011

No one is disputing the young man’s obvious talent, but you must admit when an influencial radio commentator makes a silly statement like: “Dice should be allowed to bypass all the rounds straight to the finals” you must expect people to take issue with that. Afterall, so much can happen on the night of the show, like forgeting one’s lyrics, singing in an off key etc. It is still supposed to be a competition judged on the night of the show and not a preordination. otherwise, why have a show in the first place if you knew before hand what the outcome was going to be?

        • Brit
          February 8, 2011

If we can make excuse for Ossie and Dice why can Skerrit do what he is doing whatever it is?

  9. Adult ED
    February 7, 2011

To the ignorant Dominicans note; Dice did not get the opportunity to defend his crown so technically he still has King Status. Ossie is making a valid point that Dice should not have to go through the eliminations. Rules are in place to guide the process and can be amended or made flexible to address Dice’s situation.
In terms of Dice’s performance receiving 10 out of 10 this was obviously well deserved. It is a fact that Dice’s calypso talent is superior to his fellow competitors. On this night he performed according to his ability and only Tasha P was close. Alvin thought 9.99 for Dice just because (he did not have a valid reason for denying Dice 10).

You guys are confusing readers. He took part in 2008 where he was defending his crown he won in 2007. So how can say that he is still king. He lost to Hunter so he was defeated.

So he did defend his crown.

i believe that Lady bee sgould have been ssent to semi finals. Her song contains lyrics as graphic as they are, are what the dominican society is currently facing and having a hard time dealing with. Our court systems should be less sympathetic to the accused man and start thinking about the victim who never really gets justice for the way in which they have been violated. and the doctors who do not want to examine the children when they are brought to the hospital after they have been abused. take it easy, god forbid that this should happen to your child. we shall see your perspective on the issue then.

listened to the quarter finals show and I was somewhat surprised at the song selected by the OBSERVER. The song was about the King Maker. No disrespect to Pat aaron but I thought the lyrics was unsuitable for a competition. In a calypso competition it is defintely not wise to give praises to your competitors. While the song mention the Pat Aaron made Kings special emphasis and praises was bestowed upon Dice.
The song was written by Pat Aaron and in my opinion the song is well suited for the season compilation, a Pat aaron production. As stated the song focuses on the work of Pat Aaron and I have no problem in giving the man Pat his rightful recognition. The lyrical format brought out arrogance , coy and brash.

I believe that a veteran like The OBSERVER shhould know better than to sing a song praising and glorifying his competitor. during an actual competition

Maybe you could post me a copy of the Sun News Paper.

I am certainly not surprised at the comments of this individual. He could have just said that there is no need for any finals. Just give Dice the damn crown now!! What a shame!!!

And to imagine, this guy actually sits as a magistrate and is expected to dispense justice without bias, fear or favour?

theres no need to place the mans proffession on the spot light. and most ppl shares the same views. the last time dice sang he was the crowned king, and aernt the kings supposed to go stright to finals?????????

@fair is fair: It’s true Dice left as a King but remember he’s not the reigning king….the rules most likely refer to the reigning king. Dice already have so much maleh – leave it like dat where he works from scratch to WIN his crown…then let’s see what else dem idle people will harp about!

I love Mr. Lewis’ commentary. Though some would like him to sound more balanced, he’s not judging the show so he’s entitled to his personal opinions.

          Dice againnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

COMFORTER’s omission was really blantant! That shows how biased, and one-sided calypso judging has become. It is no longer about substance, but rather POPULARITY, NEGATIVITY, ANTI-GOVERNMENT LYRICS and SMUT for one to make it through calypso these days!!!

i loved comforter’s songs but i think he should have sung his other song instead. and honestly, a calypso is like a story, beginning, mddle, end. he still had more blood running and the song did not have an end. the show was judged right. i from possie but fair is fair. he also san off-key and that also set him back.
