It is now officially confirmed that Leslassa Armour-Shillingford will represent Dominica at the 63 edition of Miss World pageant to be held in Indonesia on September 28, 2013.

Armour-Shillingford will be supported by the Discover Dominica Authority through the Dominica Festival Committee.

“Through Leslassa’s National and Regional participation and success, we have every faith that she will make Dominica proud at the Miss World Pageant 2013,” said Colin Piper, CEO/Director of Tourism said on Monday. “In our quest for 90,000,visitors by 2015, the rallying cry has been for unity, one concerted effort, and this is no different, we must all rally in support of Leslassa. ”

The Authority’s believe that Miss Dominica’s participation at the Miss World Pageant will have tremendous promotional benefits to Dominica and as such has pledged all possible support and assistance to Miss Dominica 2013, and her team in making this venture possible.

Armour-Shillingford holds three regional titles in addition to her Miss Dominica 2013. She has been crowned Miss Carival in St Vincent & the Grenadines, Miss Jaycees International in Antigua and Miss Caribbean Culture in Nevis, as well as First Runner up in the Miss Caribbean World Pageant.

Below is a full list of titles and awards at pageants she participated in:
Miss Dominica 2013 – Best Costume, Best Performing Talent, Best Swimwear & Best in Swimwear.
Miss Caribbean World 1st Runner-Up – Best Swimwear & Miss Photogenic
Miss Carival 2013 – Best Talent, Best Evening Wear, Best Interview & Miss Photogenic
Miss Jaycees International 2013 – Most Photogenic, Best Swimwear, Best Talent & Best Interview
Miss Caribbean Culture Queen 2013 –  Best Interview

She plans to continue with her platform of holistic education which takes into consideration the child’s academic, emotional and social development.

Some 116 delegates from around the world have already been confirmed to participate in the pageant.

Contestants will be visiting a variety of iconic locations including Bali and Jakarta, pristine beaches, awe inspiring temples, and areas of outstanding natural beauty around Indonesia.

This will be the 1st edition of Miss World without a swimsuit event. This after protests from hard-line Muslims threatened to force the pageant out of Indonesia.

Dominica was first represented at the pageant in 1978 by Mona Jno Lewis in London.

Did JoAnne Jno-Baptise not represent Dominica back in 87 somewhere around…the girl has talent and she should be supported, however, we can’t help but notice her name…Dominica is a very oppressive country we all know that, so why the discussions let’s just Keep Calm and Support Lesslassa – The Lando girl was equally beautiful and intelligent but not with names…

Go for it Lessoe! Dominicans are with you. Just being in that show makes us known on the world map. And hats off to you for agreeing to wear your natural hair. We black women of the world need to realize that what God has given us cannot be better than false hair. Too much H.I.B!!!

Why don’t those negative Dominicans just quit! The girl is beautiful, she is Dominican and is going to represent Dominica at the Ms World Pageant. This is a very prestigous pageant and I am proud that Dominca has such a beautiful representative. If Leslassa win, we all win, Dominica wins, that what matters. That’s why islands like Jamaica and Trinidad are so far ahead of us because all Dominicans do is whine. They just can’t see the big picture.

So what are you saying, she should not be supported because of her last name? Are you saying that because her family may have a little more than others she should not be endorsed? You would swear Leslassa had not won the national crown and any other regional titles..like she was given an opportunity she did not deserve….the square pegs in rounds holes all around this country is what people should have the problem with…Her chaperon, family and friends setup a huge marketing campaign like no other because they believe in her that much and they have the personal resources to support her but that cannot be held against her….We should be happy that her family is willing and able to send her with the support of the DDA to help promote the country. We all will benefit….DDA is not financing her entire trip…the family and friends and sponsers are finding creative ways to raise the funds necessary to represent herself and the country to the best of her ability…..What else do we want her to prove?
People speaking here have absolutely no idea the work that goes on in the background to do what has been done and figure is a just another bourgeois child that get a free opportunity…Leslassa and her crew worked damn hard to get where she is and others should respect it and emulate it and stop trying to destroy what is our own because it seems easier to hate what we done understand than to try to educate ourselves…!!!!! Jah Bless Leslassa and Dominica…Let no Man Curse!!!

Wey papa , boy there are some jealous and bad Dominicans eh. For you all to support the young lady because she is going to contest the Miss Universe Pageantry, you guys are finding all negative things to say…(.how come this or that, why this or that). First of all , she has her family’s full support and those of us who even if we don’t know her still support her 100t %. She is Dominican just like us and right now those who are blasting here and there should not be throwing all those negative comments toward her. This is looking so bad reading all those negative comments online. If it were another Caribbean national vying for Miss Universe, you all would not have anything to say much less say something negative. Her family got her there , so what? If my family can get me up in the sky, I’d be happy and so would anyone else. Leave the girl alone and let her enjoy herself. Who on earth would leave their family behind and uplift another? Dominicans need to stop that bold azzz jealousy attitude they have. Just hope all you doh put voodoo on the girl . ZOR TOE JALOUZI.

One of the deadly sins is envy. It appears to be rooted in their hearts. It is disappointing that they are so negative. The world consists of such people. There are some who are not encouraging and have nothing good to say about others. God is taking note of their words. They should know the end result of their envy and bitterness of heart if they do not change. These are the ones who give others thumbs down for stating the truth.

This is all well and good but it just confirms one thing and that is, Discrimination is alive and well in Dominica. Dominica still operates on class system. Over the years there were several others queens who did just as well around the region but was never supported or pushed to participate in the Miss World competition, instead, they committees played broke and called it a day. Now all of sudden Colin Piper speaking. Anyway, congrats, I look forward on seeing her Sash saying Ms Dominica in the top 10. We will still support her.

Am I to believe based on the comments that I’ve read that because Leslassa comes from an affluent family that she should not be given the opportunity to showcase what she can do?If it was someone who was not “rich”,as some of us may put it, that person would be encouraged to reach for the stars,be told the sky’s the limit, don’t let anything or anyone keep you back and we would have already started all kinds of “……thons”,to help that “less fortunate”person. So tell me what is wrong with Leslassa having the same opportunities?
Leslassa’s family and friends have stood behind her, lobbied for funds to help her and have their own funds that they can help with. What is so wrong for wanting to give that to her?
Leslassa is well spoken and very articulate…she doesn’t “mamotay” or speak in that sing-song voice.
Leslassa can dance ballet and play a musical instrument, among other things…which the the talents she would need to display at shows of this magnitude….not recite a poem or cram a play for laughs on stage.
So give the young lady a break….who her family is should not be used to squash what she obviously be very good at.

All we had to do was wait for the right year and for the right queen to come along. Leslassah whether she is here because of her surname or not is an exceptional Queen, one we have not seen in a while. And I do not think former queen Miss Lando(who is too busy now with other things) would give great representation or even beat the odds like Miss Armour-Shillingford.We need to give her our full support no matter what because truth be told she is going to make a great impact at Miss World.#teamleslassahmissworld

It is understandable and should be to everyone that this year 2013 she competed in those pageants and won three of them. Therefore, it is to be expected that she, no one else, should enter the Miss World Pageant 2013. It makes good sense. Why can the critics not comprehend that?

I see blatant discrimination in this decision thought i applaud the effort, why was Marcella Larocque not given the chance, why was the charming lady from the territory not given that same chance too to me this lady from the carib territory would create a much better impression for Dominica coming from the original carib tribe, only in Dominica the NAME and FAMILY connections matters

Was it possible at the time? did they have the financial backing? stop posting stuff under the name of New Yorker and help in the areas you are requesting. I always marvel at our ‘memwe poule’in Dominica. every year when our queens win, there is a rallying call for them to participate in miss world. I recall on various blogs and social media, people suggesting that contributions be sourced even from Dominicans in the diaspora to fund this. where were you then? well the way I see it, this team appears to be willing to go the extra mile, so I say to them go for it. the thing that separates these go getters from the rest of us is not necessarily their name but their work ethics. a favourite priest of mine always used to say, “hayee chien may dit dent y blanc”

the reason why the others haven’t gone it’s because of funding. Obviously the young lady family is willing to fund her and in turn the festival committee assisting. They all are afforded equal opportunity as long as they’re capable of helping themselves but as we know…we as Dominicans always looking on someone to do for us..I applaud the queen for going for it considering it was felt by many as an undeserved win so she has to prove herself

What is the point of all these “lame” reasons and excuses as to why Ms.Shillingford got the opportunity to participate in the Miss World Pageant. You people are ridiculous. Allow me to express my apprehensions in saying that it is a wonderful opportunity that she has grasped taking part in this pageant for it inspires not only her but other young women and it shall become a tremendous boost in our tourism industry. I don’t think we should be quick to bring judgement as to her family being who they are and connections she has access to that she is given the opportunity. It is fair to say that every Former Miss Dominica deserved the equal opportunity to participate in pageants on an international level but we should be rational thinking persons and acknowledge the fact that there is a tremendous expense facilitated with these shows internationally, so therefore this could be one of the reasons why former Dominican queens have not been able to grasp the opportunity. And to respond to a prior comment, Nadira Lando was a wonderful queen and I have paid close attention to every pageant she has participated in as well as her interviews, yes she is indeed beautiful and has the Miss Universe potential but there is a saying, give a man a pencil let him write he would write you and excellent essay but give a mike and let him speak out loudly and he chokes or sounds ridiculous. Ms.Lando therefore needs a some speech development and it is obvious seeing that she has never won best interview in any of her pageants but she is intelligent and needs practice in portraying it. Ms.Lando is indeed a beauty. Ms.Shillingford on the other hand has beauty and speech and would be excellent given more required and necessary Training for I did as well pay close attention to her pageants. POINT IS… that When Ms.Shillingford takes the stage she would not just be representing her self and her family but a nation, a people, a culture and that is us and we should be a proud people. It is mandatory that we put our negatives aside, behind where ever, and give her the support she needs and not only need but deserves. She will indeed do well and she has the support of not only Dominica but every Pageant committee in the Caribbean and the Caribbean people in general. My advice to Ms.Shillingford is that make your people proud, do your best and keep your head up, but remember stay humble cause any self centred pride god forbid will be your downfall. Blessings and success to you Ms.Shillingford.

Totally uninterested with the content of the topic at hand because I do not see how it relates to national development, pride maybe… But the conversation is an important one because it will be a litmus test for the committee who is responsible for making the decision to send the future queens to different contests. It will demand more careful selection in the next pageant, and the queen will be more thoroughly selected. Though I do not care about the content, as indicated above, however I believe that the conversation is good because it tells those in authority (from the Portsmouth protests to the Grandbay protesters) that the people are watching, and it seems like the good old days have a number written on its back…

From since Leandra or is it Nakita?..the queens have been winning 3 regional crowns no body ever listened to the call to send them to miss world. Now the last name is double handled we can send her…..Double standards. I was elated to read this news articles that Leslassa will be participating in Miss World Pageant. Good luck to you. I visualize that you are presently preparing for this major undertaking. Dominicans of goodwill are with you all the way, wishing you all the best.
I am looking forward to September 29th. I checked it on the calendar. It is a Saturday, an excellent time that the pageant will have a worldwide audience that evening.
I hope nothing of importance comes up which will keep me away from viewing the pageant. I will prepare my healthy snacks and drinks and with a few friends to have a get-together while viewing the show. Who knows? We may plan a party if not at my place of residence but at another. Whoever gets the preference. :)
Rest assured that I will be spreading the news and among my non-Dominican friends who, in turn will inform their family and friends. Miss World Pageant will have a greater audience than ever. Consider all the Dominicans all over the world who will be tuning in.
Leslassa you can say that you got us, more than ever interested in Miss World Pageant. When you are on stage slightly remember all of us who will be viewing you and vying for you. Do not get nervous. :) We will also be praying for you. Come what may our love and admiration for you will not wane. You have already excelled and we are satisfied with your achievement. Her outgoing personality and self confidence will allow her to rise above these harsh comments. Lesslassa, win, loose or draw you have our support. Your participation in this prestigious pageant will bring tourists to our humble shores. We love you. Go for it!

CONGRATULATIONS LASLESSA!! Congratulations to Discover Dominica and all others who contributed to this outcome. NOW LET THE WORLD TRUELY DISCOVER DOMINICA’s IMMACULATE TALENTs. Laslessa’s Dream most now become Our Dream, Dominica’s Dream.

Now we should all rally together as one nation and the chorus of support should drown out all negativity. Others say there were other queens of the past – true that is but let’s discuss after the pageant. Now Dominica must focus on winning.

With Laslessa’s consent and that of Discover Dominica and her sponsors, the billboards must now be a feature at the arrival side (airside) of the airport, the entrance to Roseau, at Picard, Close to Auto Trade and other strategic locations arround the island.

She should be branded with a Dominica product – probably a local exotic beauty product (like Heaven Scent????) – but first verify the product’s autheticity, market worthiness, packaging and possible appeal).

To enthuse the whole nation, set up a Queens of the past radio competition (ALL RADIO STATIONS)- the what year, what about them questions with historical facts around the era they reigned and with reasonable prices to add to the hype – NOT MUCH TIME I KNOW !!

Do I sound overly excited? Indeed I am because Dominica has an opportunity to shine – the whole nation must say that today we begin a new life: we are unstoppable

To use a Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu Affirmation, Dominica should say “I WILL PERSIST UNTIL I SUCCEED, I WAS NOT DELIVERED IN THIS WORLD IN DEFEAT. FAILURE WILL NO LONGER BE MY PAYMENT FOR MY STRUGGLES.

GO AND WIN LASLESSA. GO AND WIN DOMINICA – WHATEVER FORM THAT WIN MAY BE WE WILL BE GRATEFUL, BUT AIM FOR THE CROWN.
    SUCCESS

CONGRATULATIONS LASLESSA! I cannot be more pleased. NOW HER DREAM BECOMES OUR DREAM – DOMINICAS DREAM. WE MUST BE ALL IN TOGETHER!! Congratulations too Discover Dominica for a fantastic effort so far and all others with them.
NOW WE MUST LET THE WORLD TRUELY DISCOVER DOMINICA AND THE RICHES OF ITS BOUNTIFUL TALENTS WE ARE ENDOWED WITH.

We must create one rallying cry of support in all forms that is so loud it will drown out all negativity from whichever source it comes. Let just positivity, hope, hightened expectation, encouragement and support reach throughout the breath of Dominica.

With the Consent of Laslessa, Discover Dominica and sponsors, the Billboards must now be throughout Dominica – from the arrival side (airside)of the airport, to entrace to Roseau, one at Auto trade, In Picard and in other strategic locations around the island.

Brand her with a Dominica product of strategic value – even a beauty product like Heaven Scent or whatever that product may be(first verify its appeal, packaging , marketability etc. ) Maybe not much time but it may be worth the effort.

produce fliers. create a quiz surrounding the past dominica queens – a who in what year competition and what we know about them with lucrative prices to add to the hype.

I am excited because this Wonderful Gem – Laslessa, has given Dominica aof a n opportunity on a plater. We must embrace it. KUDOS to Discover. All COPORATE CITIZENS – infact ALL DOMINICANS WHO CAN SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THIS EFFORT. Is there a special Miss World 2013 Fund set up yet? This must be done yesterday, if you get my Drift.

GO DOMINICA!! GO LASLESSA! AND WIN !! WHAT EVER THE FORM OF THE WIN WE WILL BE PROUD

I think lesslasa can represent Dominica but she should change her ballet talent. In the Caribbean we are not use to seeing ballet so it will look unique to us. Go out there in the wider world where they are use to seeing ballet will not be creative or unique to them cause its an everyday thing. So you can do it just change ur talent. That’s my best advice to you.

    August 12, 2013

    This is predictable.

Once the uppity possie realised they had someone they could push they did.

Bear in mind that other Queens in the past simply did not have that kind of advocacy or support. Piper and co are bandwaggoners, eager to support the same bofa pretend elite.

There is a principle here. Dominica Queens who have pedigree should get support.

And this is Dominica in 2013.Still run on the same narrow values of 50 years ago and with cronies in nearly every institution looking out for ONE SET of people.

Whats the problem you say, she will do Dominica proud. She may well do and she is a wonderful young woman from appearances. The problem is someone else may also have done Dominica proud in the recent past, not just those ordained by a family and a set of friends in high places.

It is very much like scholarships in the days gone by.

The problem is that once merit is selective it permeates every level of society.

Unfortunately we have mediocre people everywhere pulling strings.

The Kalinago girl won a couple crowns, the girl before her as well.

Note that every engine of support has been mobilised for this Queen.

Again, no fault of the girl, who is beautiful and intelligent from everything I have seen and heard.

If Dominica Tourism, the DHTA and Invest DOminica and all the other well wishers want to see Dominica represented on Ms World, it would help if that was a wish that had no specific horse to ride on.

I will enlighten you reporter. Leandra Lander won the same 3 regional crows leslassa is holding right now. And let us not base it on the number of regional crowns. We have Nakita Lugay, Marah walter, Marcia Baptiste, Nadira Lando who all won 2 regional crowns and are very intelligent young women. Why is it they could not rally around them to take part in the Miss World pageant. It is not just for one set or the bofa ones. Leslassa I support all the way but she taking part in the Miss World pageant would have always brought up controversy seeing that we had other queens in the past who performed excellent.

I think she deserves to go up for Miss world because she has “proven” herself. You can’t just send anyone up for Miss world. We’re probably the only country representing the OECS. It’s not an opportunity that comes every year, where we can just give each queen a shot. Also about family this and family that on the big stage the name Armour is but a spec of dust, who do you think they are the Elizabeth family? It has to do with talent, go ahead and send anyone to Miss world, you must have not seen the question and answer round when Miss Nadira Lando won, girls couldn’t answer simple questions such as 2+2 in a local setting. Now put them on a stage where the entire world is watching what do you think will happen? She speaks well, and looks okay. When going up for these things you send the best possible candidate you can find. If you’re WELL educated with good looks and the grace of God it doesn’t matter what family you come from you will go for far, but sadly a-lot of people aren’t blessed with both. Wish the lady good luck and stop talking BS so Dominica can receive some form of exposure to help your tourism industry.

regardless of your opinions, all arguable, and which i must attest I can understand but largely disagree to, there is a moment when you will stop the PREDICTABLE bashing that you are doing, the shade you are throwing, and show your support also.

Have you seen her perform? Watched any of her competitions? She is absolutely breathtaking and in every pageant, regardless of the demographic, the audience could agree that she shone the brightest.

I urge you to remove the Amour-Shillingford and think of her as Leslassa, look at the way she works the pageant and try to not be captivated.

      August 13, 2013

Only in Dominica people can do whatever they so please and get away with it. Its not a question of whether Leslasa deserve to go. EVERY PAST MISS DOMINICA DESERVED TO GO. Stop singling out the queens. Every one deserved an equal shot. Being miss Dominica is enough to qualify you. I am waiting to see what happens next year because I am sure the next years queen will expect the same treatment. Now I don’t want ignorant responses like shut up, I will logical opinions. If you were a past queen wouldn’t you feel cheated on if more fuss was made over one person over you? wth. You people really know how to make some feel special and the rest like they don’t matter.

There are many Miss Dominica’s who didn’t win regional pagaents which are just as talented as Leslassa. And please not Nadira. That was our least talented queen. I understand where you are coming from however it takes the Team to make the effort and drive and push the Queens and the different organizations responsible. From all accounts Leslassa’s Team is powerful and completes her. The other Queens whom I agree were talented and as you say qualified to compete in the Miss World just by being Miss D/ca did not have such impact as Leslassa.
Further their Team were not as cohesive as Leslassa’s Team. Respect Carla Armour. Leslassa is the first queen to make us see Miss Caribbean World live on Stream
First queen to make us see Miss Carival live on stream
First queen to make us see Miss JCI live on stream
First queen to make us see Miss culture in St. Kitts life on Stream

I may be totally wrong but if I remember correctly, Diane Francis and Macella larocque did as good if not better than she has done. As for all the firsts you mentioned, these are totally irelavant. We didn’t have the ability to see those shows before, so after saying all this I tend to agree with anyone who would suggest that the only reason she is going to miss world is due to who she is, I. Call them bougouise if you wish but they have the ability to make things happen. Maybe we can learn from this and use them in future, rather than criticise her and her team for being who they are and for making a positive difference. Oh how we love to hate success! How do we know that past queens did not qualify for this kind of support? It really is not a matter of surname or the effort that her team is making. It is a matter of transparency in the process.

Prior to making negative statements which come from your mind, as imbedded in your heart, you should ask yourself the question, “Did any of the other Miss Dominica showed interest in it? Will the future Miss Dominicans show interest? Leave this to the future.

      August 12, 2013

Some of what you and others have said may very well be true. Every queen who won Ms. Dominica should be able to go to Ms. World. However, the fact is, knowing Lassa, she is innocent of any of the evil things that may are attributing to her. She is not ambitious in a negative way, her head is not swollen and she is truly doing this for Dominica and Dominicans regardless of what family and surname we may have.

How about we rally behind her and hope she does so well that the next one, next year will also get the same inopportunity once the NDC/DFC realizes the impact of just being there at that pageant. I don’t know if you realize this but a campaign was started by an international organization agitating for Dominica to finally rejoin the pageant after 1975 and I am sure there was much consideration and deliberation before the decision was made.

Lassa does not stand alone but on the shoulders of Marcella LaRoque, Diane Francis, Francilia Agar, Nakita Burno, Marcia Baptiste and all the other bright and talented queens that have gone before. I am sure none of them begrudge her but celebrate her. Because of all of them, she stands. So if they support her then why shouldn’t we? Think about that.

were you aware that her and her team pushed for the support that was necessary for her to even qualify for ms world? She was not selected by the festival committee at random ‘because of her name’ or even because of her awesome talent. She worked for it. Certainly every ms dominica deserves the same opportunity as the one she as received but did they want to go? I actually don’t know.

If i was a past queen and saw the mammoth potential that Leslassa has I wouldn’t bat an eyelash that it was ill-deserved. All of the crowns she’s won were wipe outs, she blew the other contestants away. she is special and she certainly deserves the fuss. There is no way you can argue otherwise.

This was my comment to a previous article and I shall say it again.
My wish is that both the Government and the Private Sector would recognize the achievements of these young women, who have made Dominica, the Venezuela and Puerto Rico at the Miss Universe and Miss World at the Caribbean level. I believe that Dominica could create an impact if we send Nadira to Miss Universe 2014 nd [ Miss Universe is a fashion/runaway model show] and Leslassa to Miss World 2014 [ Miss World is beauty with a purpose and talent round]. Both girl would need a year to prepare. Where our private sector would come in is by assisting to acquire the franchise, while our Government with it relations with Venezuela, who seeking Venezuela support in providing training, there are pageant schools in Venezuela.

On a different note anyone wishing to take part in the Miss Dominica/Carnival Queen Show should have made up her mind and have her preforming talent down pack. She should already be shaping her interview and communication skills. The rest is left to the designing team.

To all Dominicans when someone is good just please accept that the person is good she is just the right person to represent dominica at the miss world pageant Just As i said lenox LInton will be a very good Prime minister I can see lenox one on one with President Obama and many other top officials discussing issues and talking so that we understand
So when someone is good lets just say it

I have no difficulty supporting what is good but there should be clear rules or guidelines identifying who does or does not qualify for the kind of support that the DDA and the Festivals Committee is giving. If there were clear rules and guidelines which applied to everyone I can assure you that people like me would see transparency and there would be no basis for making my comment.

Granted, everyone gets thumbs down. It is not a competition. However, the fact that you mixed politics with someone participating in Miss World’s Pageant, this is why you got many thumbs down. You should have kept to the issue and leave politics, politicians and a future politician out of this topic.

Since you made this statement, I will deviate and state if only they showed their love and cared for the life of others as they do their so-called standard, the world would be a happier, peaceful and safe place. Their standards are what caused terrorists actions and caused governments and airline enterprises to expend exorbitant sums of money to protect their property, employees and passengers. In turn, passengers bear the high cost of flying. This accounts for the high cost of flying. Ever considered that? So much for their so-called standards. Think before you comment.

Why wasn’t the former queen given that opportunity? Dominican be smart why wouldn’t u send someone with more experience. Personally I think the former miss Dominica should represent Dominica and Miss Shillingford can go next year. Lets be fair this is so unfair to the former miss Dominica. It’s really who u know.

The former queen isn’t bothered…why should you? If she is then that’s her business… if you didn’t notice Ms. Shillingford supports pushed for her to go to the pageant other than just ‘talk’ about it…. everyone can’t go…

    • August 12, 2013

its fear enough miss shillingford won more than nadira and have a greater personality than nadira she is the one who can go she prove herself miss shillingford.

Because the opportunity did not present itself. Who has more experience? Personally, I do not think the former Miss Dominica should represent Dominica this year and Miss Shillingford next year. This is not unfair to any former Miss Dominica. The time is now, let us all appreciate.

This former queen has an attitude that irritates many people. It is ok to have standards but I Believe the former queen NL is not representing Kalinago. She does not want to be carib . She wished to be someone else. The woman writes Ms Jaycees,Ms Dominica, Miss etc at the back of her name each time. I was wondering if these were degrees. Look at how humble Leslassa and those before her are. Gone with the former queen.

  87. Impartiality
    August 12, 2013

Again I applaud the young lady on her achievements and I wish her the best in the Miss World Competition but I have a few questions. How do
the Discover Dominica Authority and the Dominica Festivals Committee decide who they will give support to for the Miss World or any other competition? What are the rules? I get a sense of partiality toward Leslassa because there have been a few young ladies who have done very well in the past and I don’t recall any public or other statement of support for their participation in the Miss World competition by these entities. Anyone who has better information please feel free to enlighten me.

    • Justice and Truth
      August 13, 2013

Nonsense! Be broadminded. My thoughts are, it all depended on who sponsored her, who chaperoned her and her interest. It had absolutely nothing to do with partiality – preference.
The time was ripe – right for her. Later for others to come if they excel, qualify and are interested. Leave it at that!

      • Impartiality
        August 13, 2013

Why should depend on who sponsored her? So the sponsorship and not her ability should dictate whether she qualifies for further assistance from DDA? Now you talking ..it. You say be broadminded but you seem to be very limited in your thinking. I am thinking of the wider implications for all of the young ladies who will participate in these competitions in the future. What kind of sponsorship do they need to have to move to the Miss World level? If the sponsorship is so important don’t you think they should know the importance of it to their progress even before they enter the local competition? Give me a break.

When you think of her relatives, grand’s as well, her grand aunts on both sides of her parents, you will know why. She is a product, descendant of them especially her parents. I recall them in D/ca. One of them, her grand aunt Jacqueline Armour. She was (is) a beauty. The others as well. All of them have their individual character and personality trait.
I recall, too, her late grandparents by father, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Shillingford. They were beautiful and pleasant people; always smiling. Mrs. W. Shillingford, Aunty Bam as a friend who is related to her call her (most people), taught at the Dominica CHS. Leslassa certainly inherited some of her relatives traits.

I hope she does well at the pageant and Dominica gets the recognition its deserves thereby attracting more visitors to the island and boosting the tourism industry. However she is not the only queen in Dominica history to win all their regional pageants. Its because of surname they send her miss world. But anyway i hope she does well.

    • anonyme
      August 12, 2013

Enough already with the surname story. turn the page From what I hear she does not flaunt it so give her a chance. I also know her mother(former schoolmate)and she was on to something when she introduced Montessori to DA. look at the results. (My own daughter benefitted from Montessori in the US.) Maybe you can look at it in this light rather than always look for the negative. I don t think their intention is to keep score of who won the most pageants.

    • Anonymous
      August 12, 2013

She is being sent because she deserves to go who on earth cares about a surname it certainly is not going to make any difference in indonesia. Give credit where credit is due

      • Justice and Truth
        August 13, 2013

Some of the bloggers commented about her surname. They are the ones who brought it up and who think petty. People are not responsible for the family they were born into. Furthermore, God ordained all to be. It is his choosing.
This era is not the same as it was in those days. I am certain she is a humble person and is not lording her family name and her name over anyone.
What I have known of the Armours, Shillingfords and the Josephs, they are all nice people. Some have since passed on. Generally, the manner we treat others, it is the same way they will reciprocate. We give them due respect.
Simply love Leslassa as a person and a fellow Dominican. Encourage her, applaud her, lift up her spirit and for her achievements. I am certain this is all she humbly and lovingly expects of especially Dominicans.
