Local acts release Dancehall music video

Marigot-based label, Fine Grass Productions (FGP) and Ambo Visuals, have collaborated with several local artistes to produce a medley music video.

Medley videos have become a fairly common phenomenon on the Caribbean entertainment landscape, and this one aims to take Dominica by storm.

The medley, officially named the Buss Way Riddim Medley, features some of the hottest local acts on the music scene such as Asher Thomas, Himay, CHOEB and Colton T.

As is to be expected, several FGP artists also take center stage on the riddim and video.

The video was the brainchild of Dancehall producer/artist Irv ‘Oozy’ Antoine of Fine Grass Productions (FGP). The ‘riddim’ itself was created by Denzel ‘Delirious’ Matthew.

Local video production company Ambo Visuals, shot and edited the video, which was filmed primarily on location at the Pagua Bay House in Marigot. Additional scenes were shot at the Weirs Hard-court and in the capital city Roseau, Dominica.

According to a release from the producers, there has been a quite a hype leading up to the release of this video via social media Facebook.

This video is the second of its kind being shot on the island. The first was the “Red Klinic Medley” produced by Blackkingz Production in 2010.

If so many people we’rent so ignorant towards the dance hall industry i don’t think so many ignorant comments wouldn’t have been made. If we all knew what Jamaican patois is then nobody would be saying that they are all trying to sound like Jamaicans. If they don’t sing that way then it wouldn’t be considered dance hall music. It has nothing to do with their accents. I am an avid dance hall fan, i follow a lot of dance hall artists both prominent and up-an-coming so i would like to think i know a lot about the industry and the art form. Give them a chance, people. If they make it we all benefit. And to correct you all.. this is a medley video and not just one song. If you really want to know what each artist on this riddim has to say, purchase a cd and listen to each and every song.

The same musical styles… the same messages… how am i to support local if local doesnt want to distinguish itself or be different? Half of them trying to sound Jamaican the other half dont have anything that makes them stand out… How many of yall gonna remember this track in 15 years?

Well done Shadd and Ervey, look at criticism as a way of telling you guys you can do best not better best. For me it is great work and nice to see young people doing something positive. So big up to you and your team, keep reaching for the stars the sky is the limit. love you all.

Dominicans have to much of the ‘CRAB in the Barrel’ mentality; what is so wrong in giving these young people the recongnition they deserve! come on for once let us support and help build and uplift them instead of trying to bring the down with our negative comments. Those that want them to look for, why don’t you help them out by giving them a job. We need to stop this hatred that is strangling our country.

From Top 5 the song would be just fine without the rest

    1) Mysta Anytime(mostly cause he sing clear and not trying to sound jamaican)
    2) Delly (mostly cause he sing clear and not trying to sound jamaican)
    3)Asher Thomas
    4)Colton T
    5)Fieces

Criticism is not negativity, it is meant to help one (or more) improve. Without it, we are just like the other person next door! Some of the feed back on here are from music producers and artists who are IN the business and deal with these scenarios every day. This overall project gets 6 out of 10 from me. The music has no originality, too much of the same ole’ stuff, could not tell this was not just another Jamaican production, needs differentiation. The vocal ability has improved tremendously, did not try selling sex or drugs, great to see young folks taking a step towards creative artistry. Keep up the good work and to my Dominicans, relax man, criticism is not hate. Stop using the “haters” term until you understand what it means!

greetings – and it is admirable tht you are speakin knowledge to the world in order to add to humanity rather that detract from it. . .however if it is ur position tht songs that glorify violence or generally unsavory topice aren’t marketable. sadly, and most unfortunately so many of our top stars here in the states have to keep a certain amount of ‘street cred’ as they ascend the socio-economic strata. and regrettably tht means they write what they know about. and as a sidebar, they need to first break into the UK scene. if u’re big in england then the rest of europe is rdy and waiting. THEN come to the states with all tht experience…all in all they are helping americans do goooooogle searches to see precisely where dominica

wow, it’s refreshing to come across a comment that is well stated and can be clearly understood grammatically. seems like u understand the place that civil discourse has in society. . .however, i would venture to say tht most of these ppl are, in point of fact,’hatin’ on a the youth of ur country. wht u refer to is ‘constructive criticism’ meaning, u can tell me wht wasn’t right or good about my perf, but needs the proper intention behind it. but besides just sayin whether or not we like a song is cool, but ppl feel like they’re music moguls these days. I feel inadequate and stop short of criticizing the artistic merits. why? cuz i can’t write a song to save my life.and so i don’t criticize those who clarly cann! it’s kinda like ‘numb-nuts who complain about taylor swift only writing about ex’s…when you can put pen to paper, create something from nothing – and the whole world clamors for it, that’s some true BOSS swag. keep in mind-they’re puttin y’all on the map in a broader way! i’m in the states and we’re discussing a group from dominica! nuff said and while i also applaud avoiding misogyny and refs to guns n drugs, the record label is called FGP. or fine grass prod. . .lol – peace

The video is excellent, they just need to work on the lyrics. In this day and age, no song is going anywhere when it promotes shooting. SO i say before releasing, go back and edit. I hope that you guys take this little piece of advice, but all in all, thumbs up and way up. Stay positive and you will sing positive lyrics. Question: why is it called red Klinic riddim.?

This joint performance or production merit a featured appearance at the world creole music festival. I strongly suggest that the festival committee provide an early notification the production group so that the home get amp,e time to put together a 1 hour slot featuring the various artist as presented in this video. A live and that can produce a tight groove and performance of the songs.
I am asking the festival committee to give our young talent the chance and exposure they deserve . Allw them the opportunity to get paid like some of the international artists on the lineups.
To the producers of this music video you must make it happen. Engage the committee and show that you are ready to do this. Start your rehearsals and come up with a production that will match or exceed that of the Jamaican artists that they will bring on 2013 festival.
Remember what mind conceive you can achieve.

      April 4, 2013

So what making this dance hall music so different from all the other dance hall from all over the world? How does this merit special attention at the CMF? Man, that kind of music so “past it”, nothing original about it. People don’t have to come to Dominica to hear that. Think of something more original or ethnic.

Great work guys. The video is great. I put out the challenge to the local TV stations to dedicate a channel to showcase our talent. I know the goal is to make it big but if our local TV stations start to showcase our talent they will surely get the exposure they need. Once we start to market within i am sure that the music will get out there. What it will do is get Dominicans all over the world to be expose to the music and love the music and force the radio station where they live play your music. Keep on doing what you guys doing.

Great Job you guys, was very impressed by the quality of the video and the lyrics brought forward..really encouraging to see young people especially young men being into something that will keep them out of trouble and allow them to be more socially productive in your society. Thumbs up guys.
My only criticism is that beside Colton, Asher, CHEOB and the young lady I think all the other artist should clean it up a little more, a little hair cut or shape up never hurt nobody. Just do that and you guys will be great.

Congratulations to the young people for a well done production. I hope that you guys hold this together and try to break through the regional market with shows. I knw that Colton has been trying to get His material and talent outside of Dominica but I believe too that the collaboration of the various artists is a great idea. It is a great opportunity fr a producer to recognize that there is a pool of talent in little Dominica.

That is exactly my point Ti Nom. It is technically o.k. but there is nothing to make it stand out from the crowd. I know these young people mean well but this could have been produced by anyone else outside of Dominica. We will not get noticed unless we do something radically different.

      • Jayson
        April 4, 2013

Jay I understand clearly where you’re comming from.

It’s a nice song. It’s a nice video. It’s nice singing, but there’s no originality about it. It doesn’t have it’s own unique sound, so it can be lost in the hundreds of other dancehall/reggae artists out there.

It’s difficult , if not impossible to get anywhere in the music industry being a carbon copy of everybody else.

Example: Bouyon was original. If u hear Steel Pulse you KNOW it’s steel pulse. If you hear Burning Spear you KNOW it’s Burning Spear. If you hear Midnight Groovers you KNOW it’s MIDNIGHT GROOVERS! They all have an original sound!

If it’s been done already, leave it, they don’t want to hear no more, and get a good music manager that has an idea what he’s doing and let’s u breathe artisticly.

It’s understandable that everybody has to start somewhere so I don’t mean this as a press but just as constructive critisizm. Feel free to thumb’s down me :(

i disagree. you’ll be noticed when a reporter says, “where are you from?” – and they reply DOMINICA! having to create an entirely new sound or innovation in music is not wht artists set out to do hypothetically speaking, they could be singing opera or country music. wht’s imp is how they do it. and that is a good msg to put out to the world about ur country…and just to give an example of the voracity of my POV, i should point out that i hail from TX and here we are talkin bout a group from dominica! peace

I am not a fan of the genre but I am very impressed with the quality of work produced by our young arthists. I like the idea that the video potrayed no profanity nor sexual explicitness, nor belittling to women.
Great improvements in the vocals and the lyrical composition. I luv the tansition from the dancehall rhythm to the pop/ R&B type.
A few of the background actors and actresses seem camera shy but there is always room for improvement.
Guys you all need to focus heavily on taking your product to the next level. It s agreat idea to move forward as a collaboration in order to break through the circle of inclusion. We are way to weak In international popularity and recognition but there is strength in numbers.

Has any of the singers thought about trying out for one of these singing shows – the voice now that American Idol is doing the last ad final season. All it takes is one try.

I am way to entrenched in the old school music to become a fan of the dancehall and R&B but again I have become a fan of our young talent – I will buy your CD or come to your shows.

wow. . .i think it’s really beautiful how you took the time to so eloquently make the case tht it wasn’t ur cup o tea, but still had the human decency to realize the ‘greater good’ of supporting developing artists in one’s native country…however as an american who is a ballet dancer, this got me JUMPIN, JUMPIN! regarding ‘sounding like jamaicans’ to the rest of the world, we have in our heads tht there is an sort of “island-speak. meaning we can’t discern if the person is from jamaica, st. lucia or domonica, so tht really becomes a moot point. – ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
