Local singing sensation, Michele Henderson, is to headline what has been described as one of the “quintessential musical events of the Caribbean.”
Jazz on the Hill is to be held in Virgin Gorda on April 26 and 27 and Henderson told Dominica News Online that she is excited about participating in the event.
“I am excited to be considered good enough an act to be a headliner at a jazz event,” she said.
Henderson is no stranger to the Caribbean jazz scene, having performed at many major jazz events such as the St. Lucia Jazz Festival.
Her performance at Jazz on the Greens in Trinidad in 2012 was described by a newspaper on that island as ‘brilliant’ and ‘the highlight of the night.’
“Her experience showed as she gave a nuanced and expressive performance, shifting easily between sweet, melodic singing and hitting some soaring, powerful notes that stopped the show,” the newspaper wrote.
Henderson said she is looking forward to the show in Virgin Gorda since she started preparing since March. “I am very much looking forward to this,” she said.
She also noted that her performance will have a Dominican flavor. “They will know what our music sounds like …what Cadance is,” she said. “It will be done in a jazzy way but people will definitely have an appreciation for what we have to offer.”
Henderson pointed out that she is overwhelmed by the promotion that she and Dominica is getting because of the show. “Today I got a picture someone sent me from a magazine,” she said. “We were on the front cover as the headliners for the festival. It is exciting to get that kind of promo.”
Organizers of the event said it “promises to delight, inspire and uplift with a combination of R & B, pop, soul, gospel and of course, jazz!”
