Nacheal wins 2013 Junior Monarch title

Nacheal Walsh

Nacheal Walsh is the 2013 Junior Calypso Monarch.

The 16-year old student of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School who came close to the brink of winning the competition last year, grasped another opportunity this year, with a song entitled “On The Brink”, to capture the title.

Her song was written by Tim Durand.

In 2012, Walsh came second behind that year’s winner, Janae Jackson of the Convent High School. This year the positions have been reversed.

Jackson’s 2013 rendition is called “Month-end Economy” and it was written by her father, Ian Jackson.

In third place was Lemar “The Irish Kid” Irish of St. John’s Academy with “Endangered Species” written by Livingston “Mighty Spencer” Cassell while Phael “Mighty P” Lander placed fourth with a Norman “Ency” Cyrille composition entitled “Crank It Up”.

“I thought I was dreaming” an excited Nacheal told DNO shortly after the competition. “When I heard Janae placed 1st runner-up, I started to tremble because I saw her as my main competition”.

The 2013 Junior Monarch hastened to add that some of the other competitors, including the Irish Kid, also gave strong performances.

The show, which was organized by The Leo Club, was held at Krazy Koconuts on Thursday.

i was very disappointed when the results came out and princess chels didnt place. she didnt even look worried or nothing. she is one of the young calypsonians with the best voice. she has a wonderful stage personality. but the song wasnt for her. i think she needs a new writer.

Every year is the same thing. De Irish kid that had to win the crown. When his music was playing another music came up y did that music come up when he was singing and it did not come up when the other competitors were singing? I was clear they did not want the Irish kid to win the crown

So i am sorry that the people you wanted to place did not place and I ask for you to stop criticising me and making completely incorrect statements. I am so proud of you for having the guts to sing calypso and for standing up for yourself. We really need to stop criticizing and try to be more encouraging especially to young people. In this day and age when so many young people are getting into trouble, we should praise those who try to make productive use of their time. Phael, your father is Third Eye, calypso id your blood, so I know that you have the potential to surpass King Dice in calypso.

My advice to you Mighty P, when you are in this type of business the best thing you could do is stay away from this kind of media.

You do, people will talk; yo doh do, they will still talk. They must talk, they will talk and they have to talk.

So next year despite of how tempting it is. Do not read the comments. It will be in your best interest not to!

My congratulation to Nachael, her school and all those who placed in the competition. it has always been my opinion that the students should be taught at school with the help of experience calypso writters to write and sing their own songs.Should this be the case, we would be assured of not only good calypso singers in the future but also good calypso writters.

Great Job Nacheal. Janna is good but she is too emotional. Her song did not call for all that drama. Her message about month end was serious but not vexatious as she appeared to be portraying. Janna you are very talented but u need to use the natural melody in your sweet voice.

Nachel, you will be a big calypsonian one day. Your voice is well suited for calypso, strong and melodious with emotions.

Great show. After listening so attentively from MYC to these young talents, I truly feel that the future of calypso in Dominica is very bright. Young talents such as the “Irish Kid” is going to have a huge impact. I believe the judging was mostly fair. I would not have placed the “Mighty P” and would instead place the youngster who sang last. Something tells me that the Irish Kids is going to luck down the crown in the upcoming years. Congratulations to all the young talents and best of luck to all of you in the future.

Can DNO give us a little clip of the song? I really admire Tim Durand as a writer. I think sometimes these writers do not get the recognition they deserve. I think Tim Durand is a brilliant writer.

DNO please, can we hear this song?

Do not worry, u will get to whaere u have to get to in due time, way before the rest, because i know your parents are at your back, side and infront of you.Let them press you still. you looked real good on stage, you are a professional. Jet black , white teeth in white suit. your father bring back tears to my eyes. years ago when your uncle sang with that exact same attire persons would run on stage and polish his shoes, ask your father more about that. Hats off to you Lemar, you make us proud, you are a calypso king, the world will hear about you in years to come. you go boy, go i say go.

I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY A COMPETITOR HAD TO BE ASKED 3 TIMES TO SING HIS SONG WITH THE SAME MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT USING THE SAME MIKE LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE AND THE MC SAYING THE JUDGES DID NOT HEAR HIS THE WORDS OF HIS FIRST VERSE.WHOSE FAULT IS THIS? THE RESULT IS 4TH PLACE? WHERE ELSE COULD THIS NONSENSE HAPPEN?
INJUSTICE TO THE OTHERS WHO DID NOT GET A 2ND CHANCE TO CORRECT ANY MISTAKES. WHY CAN’T FAIRNESS BE GIVEN A FAIR CHANCE?

    • here
      February 1, 2013

again.. that’s were we are misled as human beings.. The problem was ACTUALLY that they made a mistake backstage and gave him the wrong mic. He sang his first verse with a back up mic. is that fair? when it wasnt even his fault?

    • Rass
      February 1, 2013

The mic got mixed up back stage. His back singer took his mic by mistake. Only after the sound engineer brought up the mic he was using but it was to late. That is y he was ask to go back on stage. On his second appearance he only sang his first verse. Then he was told is the complete song he had to do over there is the reason for his third appearance on stage

  41. observant
    January 31, 2013

TREAT CHILDREN FAIRLY. I WAS AT THAT SHOW AND MIGHTY P DIDN’T DESERVE A PLACE IN THAT COMPETITION. HOW CAN YOU HAVE A COMPETITOR COME ON STAGE THREE TIMES TO SING THE SAME SONG. THE SAME BAND PLAYED FOR ALL 15 COMPETITORS THE SAME MICROPHONE USED BY ALL COMPETITORS AND YOU WANT TO TELL ME THAT THE JUDGES COULD NOT HEAR THE WORDS OF HIS FIRST VERSE, AFTER HE CAME BACK AND SANG IT, YOU THEN ASKING HIM TO SING THE WHOLE SONG OVER. WHERE ELSE COULD THAT HAPPEN?
    tHAT IS JUST NONESENSE.
