NCCU Cadence-lypso competition to be held next year

Cadence-lypso singers and songwriters have been given notice to start getting ready for another National Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU) cadence-lypso competition next year.

NCCU President Dexter Ducreay on Tuesday night dispelled any notion of the show being a “one off” and announced plans for the staging of thge event next year.

Ducreay spoke at the prize giving ceremony for the 2012 competition at the Old Mill Cultural Center. “I want to announce that our patrons have demanded that we have a Cadence show next year, and we have responded in the positive. For the 2013 show, the format will be as follows: It will consist of four (4) judged appearances: elimination, quarters, semi-finals and finals with one song per artist,” he said.

He added, “every artist will start from eliminations…..this will allow greater publicity of the show, the artist and the song. The price for the tickets will remain at $40.00 in advance and $50.00at the gate. The date for the 2013 show is the Saturday before the weekend of the World Creole Music Festival.”

The NCCU president also released financial figures from the show which despite a financial loss, was from all reports, of a high standard. “I promised that the committee would release publicly, the financial results of the event.  This is a promise that must be kept because we strongly believe that this event like NCCU belongs to the people…..the information is as follows: Revenue $98,035.41 Expenses $110,324.14 Estimate deficit $12,288.73,” Ducreay said.

According to Ducreay, the idea of a Cadence Lypso competition was first conceived as a Calypso competition in 2011 by the Vieille Case branch. “After much discussion, we decided to organize a Cadence Lypso competition. In the planning stage of the event, the committee came to the conclusion that the show should be postponed as a result of the fact that the time was too short to host such a national event,” he said.

He explained that when preparation for the show began in early 2012, because the idea was a novel one, organizers were confronted with “innovative and interesting challenges” which he said were dealt with “by a committee of creative, intelligent and devoted men and women.”

Ducreay congratulated Webster Marie, 2012 winner of the competition and encouraged singers, writers and producers to start preparing for next year. “I want to encourage the writers, the singers and the producers to begin the process for the 2013 show.  There is money to be made in cadence and it is quite evident from what is happening here tonight. Everyone is being paid,” Ducreay remarked.

He concluded by thanking ‘cadence partners’ who he said had contributed tremendously in making the show a success and assured them that the NCCU would be requesting their partnership next year. “In addition, I want to appeal to you to engage me in discussions with ideas so that we can tweak the show in a manner that will increase movement of your products. I strongly believe that it is in our interest, when you the partners succeed,” The NCCU official said.

After reading all the comments on this music genre, I have to say that nobody in the Credit Union knows anything about the music industry proper. The sound was terrible, there is no marketable video being plugged on any of the TV channels…especially the most popular channel now in Dominica which is a new TV channel. Where is the proper marketing for this music, I notice that some quick Cd’s were produced to run alongside the Creole festival. This is what I am saying, CD’s o sale in this day and age. Once you put CD’s out there the pirate boys will show you how to sell it and you will not make any money. What are you doing about overseas distribution of the genre, where does it go from here…no hits were produced off any of the tracks, no buzz was created..what nonsense. Dominica is still way back in time and lost track of the outside world. Word of advice, get professionals in to advise you guys and get a proper plan and develop a proper music genre that can create hits..not those boring track that taking you old men back into your child hood. Now people want excitement.

One of the principles of the Credit Union Movement is a social responsibility, not only to its members but to the entire nation.

Credit Unions must report all activities to the people (not private and confidential) and so it is no surprise that the credit union will disclose the full expenses and income entries.

As to informing the AGM, I am a member of the NCCU and I have no need for the AGM to approve such social, educational activity. What we must do is to support the show and a surplus will be made and put back into the art form. Are you not pleased that we can highlight our culture? Are you not pleased that your funds can assist your people.

I should remind you that the credit union philosophy is “people helping people to help themselves”. Please ask the NCCU to educate you on the many principles of the Credit Union.

I think the initiative is a good one. But there’s definitely some work to be done:

    1) Seek out bigger and better sponsors.
    2) Re-think the prize structure.
    3) Having multiple showings is a good idea, but you guys must host these extra shows in a “low-cost” manner so as to not burst your budget.

There are many other ways to go…

Great show. Next year will be greater and more profitable. I’m loving the idea of transparency. WCMF need to take a page from that book.

WCMF posts the revenue and expense figures as well. This has become standard…

Yes Mr. Ducrey, take all people money and throw it behind a dead music genre, then in the end come and reduce the interest on the MRA to compensate.

Where is the due diligence? How much is this costing the NCCU members? Such a massive unprofitable venture should not have been done without the blessing of the AGM. This is not a private business or a Country club.

If this had to be done it should be Bouyon which is showing promise, not a near extinct genre which s minority are clinging to for old time sake. If continued in this haphazard manner its like pouring water in a bottomless barrel.

Do you honestly believe that a Bouyon competition has the potential to get as much support as a Cadence competition?

I agree that the genre is ailing (to say the least), but I’d like your honest answer.

It sure does. Bouyon music IS the popular music originating out of Dominica today. Bouyon music is just as big or even bigger as Cadance was BACK IN ITS DAY. All some of you can do is cry down Bouyon music and its artists. Why not support it and offer POSITIVE criticism. It is a fact that Bouton music is the in thing where Dominica music is concerned. Accept that and lets move on.

    • really?

You fail to see further than the tip of your nose. No explanation of the importance and benefits of such a visionary venture would get you more knowledgeable. The Cultural Industry means nothing to some people. Begging is an institution. CadenceLypso is an internationally acclaimed music genre. Bouyon is the term used to describe food for pigs.

Compare the lyrics and music of Bouyon to that of Cadencelypso. It’s like chalk and cheese. Which regional or international markets could Bouyon penetrate? Do you prefer pig food to a finger-licking broth?

This independence week is totally boring, nothing much to do for visitors.
Start sales of cadencelypso tickets early next year, reduce price by $10/15 and get independence bumper crowd, Possible merge with literary festival this week is great idea.
