The Caribbean Performing Arts Federation (C-PAF) Dominica has formed a new Task Force to assist in creating an environment for the creative art sector on the island.

The Task Force was launched at the Le Bistro Restaurant on Castle Street, Roseau on Tuesday.

They are; Peter Panthier- Task Force member, Zarinah Matthew- Ministry of Trade Representative, Matthew Burton- Treasurer, Hanif Gregoire- Country Manager of C-PAF Dominica inc, Simeon Joseph- Vice President, Ayodele Andrew- Secretary, Kerry Henry- PRO.

Organizers said the force’s purpose is to facilitate the development of an enabling environment for the implementation of a more integrated OECS Creative Art Sector.

“C-PAF is a result of frustration that we have encountered throughout the years seeking to develop and promote this sector called the creative industry or entertainment industry as we move along,” Irvin Durand, CEO of C-PAF Regional, said at the launch. “It is necessary for us to understand that the frustrations that we have had in making things happen, in exposing the talent that we have locally.”

Durand stated that the problem is not unique to Dominica but a regional one and even more for smaller islands.

C-PAF new Country Manager Hanif Gregoire believes there is no entertainment industry in Dominica.

“I don’t think that we have an entertainment industry in Dominica, I think that is absent,” he stated. “Why I say that is because there are no standards set out that our entertainers could look up to and aspire to or upkeep. There are no standards set out that people could look at and say, well okay that is the standard I have to meet if I want to be a star, if I want to be a role model, if I want to be the best that I could be…”

He said that there is no order in the entertainment scene on the island.

“People are just doing what they want to do, when they want do it,” he stated. “Where there is no order there is no sense of direction, meaning there is no progress.”

He described some of the goals of C-PAF.

“We want to create a one-stop-shop where every person who is involved in the various disciplines in the performing arts sector would be in one data base, would be in one network so that we would make it very easier and very time efficient for persons when they are undertaking projects like music videos, live stage shows, theatrical productions…,” Gregoire noted.

He noted further that the four main goals needed to help along the way to achieve these goals are; public awareness, sensitization, education, training & nurturing and collaboration & support.
