Shanice Langford of Newtown has emerged as the winner of the first-ever ‘Shat out Violence’ song competition (‘shat’ is the cocoy word for ‘shut’).
The event was held at the Arawak House of Culture and was organized by the Youth Development Division.
Langford was able to outperform 11 other contestants to gain the top spot while Marvin Jervier got the second place position and MRB & Spidey grabbed third position.
Speaking to Kairi FM after the show Langford said she was elated to have captured the number one spot. “I am elated, very elated,” she said. “I had a lot of sleepless nights and it did cost a lot of work.”
The 19-year-old’s song was entitled “Nation’s Cry” and she won $3,000 for her effort.
Jervier received $1,500 for his second place position while the third place winner got $750.
The ‘Shat out Violence’ song contest was preceded by a series of song writing workshops on the topic for youth on the island organized by the Youth Development Division.
Participants at these workshops were then given the opportunity to take part in zonal competitions which culminated in the grand final at the Arawak House of Culture on Wednesday, September 26.
Twelve individuals and groups participated in the final.
The show was well done… Lots of good music and lyrics… A really close one to judge in my humble opinion… Big up to the staff of Youth Development Division for keeping things positive for the youths and them….
DNO you failed to mention that every finalist was awarded $300 for participating…

Great perfomance by Shanice. It was a great show. The band was good ,the stage was well decorated.Who decorated the stage?Julian Pacquette was a good MC. He should be contacted by DFC .The performance from the prisoner was great.Good idea from YDD and the prison authority to allow him as a guest artist. He demonstrated signs of remorse when he spoke before his performance.I know the Youth Division will work with him when he lives prison.Hope the Q show have a live band also to hype up the show on Saturday
Shirley Alexander, a YDD staff did the decoration, she always does a good job
