OECS Joint Mission set to host groundbreaking Green Growth Investment Forum

The Brussels based Mission of the Eastern Caribbean States is set to host the Green Growth Investment Forum under the theme “Green Growth for Economic Resilience – Promoting Green Investments in the Eastern Caribbean through Innovation and Clean Technology” The groundbreaking event will take place at The Hotel in Brussels on the 6 and 7 October 2011.

The Green Growth Investment Forum is one of a series of initiatives by the Mission to highlight the general investment potential of the region in Europe as well as to specifically stimulate and facilitate investments and interest in the green sector in the Member States of the OECS represented by the joint Mission.  The Forum is in keeping with the international, regional and national focus on promoting sustainable development through green economic growth.

The United Nations, the OAS, CARICOM and the OECS as well as the EU and its Member States have been leading advocates of the green growth agenda and H.E Shirley Skerritt-Andrew, Ambassador and Head of the Mission, believes that, “leading up to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 17, as well as the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, it is important that environmentally vulnerable states such as those in the OECS sub-region continue to be key participants in the green discourse, particularly in a Capital as strategic as Brussels, where there are a plethora of major players from Corporate Europe, International Organisations, bilateral partners, Civil Society and of course the EU Member States and institutions.”

The event will therefore bring together private sector representatives, investment promotion agencies, policy makers, researchers, representatives of international organisations and other stakeholders from the Eastern Caribbean and across the European Union.  The aim is to promote networking opportunities, share experiences and build strategic partnerships all geared at contributing to the green growth programme in the Eastern Caribbean.

Hon. Dr. Douglas Slater, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Consumer Affairs of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will keynote the Forum which will also include presentations by officials from OECS Investment Promotion Agencies, the OECS Secretariat, CARIFORUM Directorate, UNEP, CARDI, OAS, the European Commission and private sector representatives from both the OECS and the EU.

The Green Growth Investment Forum is made possible thanks to the support of the Centre for the Development of Enterprise (CDE), the main sponsor of the event, as well as EUCARINET/ENLACE, CTA, OAS, the Taipei Representative Office in Brussels, Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the Caribbean Development Export Agency and the Caribbean Energy Information System.

The ECS Mission in Brussels jointly represents the interests of the OECS Member States of Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  For more information on the ECS Mission and the Green Growth Investment Forum, visit the Mission’s website at http://oecs.org/ecs-mission-in-brussels

Yeah, the characters from Invest Dominica Authority and Ministry of Trade might get a plane ride, some per diem and a night or two in a nice hotel, not forgetting the foood…

Not trying to be over critical, but if you know how these people use information you will agree with me.

When people go to meeting and can’t understand what is discussed at the meetings, can’t make a valuable contribution, come back home and struggle to write a report….you get the picture?

The PS then takes the report, passes it to his secretary to put in a file and this is it. Meeting finish, plane ride, per diem, hotel nights, really, who benefits….not Dominica for sure.

These are the kinds of things I would have love to see Skerrit put a brakes on, because when he could not approve travel, he was highly critical of all the travelling being done, once he gets to the position where no one has to approve travel for him, then its okay for all and sundry to just batchay plane at tax payers expense.

This is a great meeting, I think the whole issue of climate change is imperative for small island developing states, given the threat of rising sea levels and all other related disasters brought about by climate change.

It is a very very serious issue for all these small islands, but again, who is going to take this initiative and run with it. We got alot of resources to tap into eg. thru GEF etc., but who really is going to further that cause…..

My take is, don’t leave such an important issue to Yvor and his rest of clowns to decide on for Dominica. Bring in the real technical minds and something substantive from the Ministry of Trade, maybe the Director of Trade…who is he by the way….the last I heard was that Eisenhower was missing…..

We need serious people to attend these meetings, because while we using sling shots, the rest of the countries using machine guns….u know what I mean…and so we are always a few steps (or maybe plenty steps) behind.

I suggest that you recommend yourself for this important forum as you seem to have all the answers. When you point at others look closely at the number of fingers pointing back at you. Look closely at yourself and your personal and internal shortcommings and Stop criticizing, instead go out there and make a difference. You surely sound like a disgruntled servant who did not get their wish. Have you ever heard Nassief out basting anyone??? the man humbly go on his merry way while clowns like you try to show him off. Find peace with yourself so you can make a more postive contribution to DNO and other public publications in the future.

Why so cynical? I was one of the participants at the forum last week and must say that my fellow Dominican participants and I were all commended on our excellent presentations and contribution to the forum. We were able to interact with representatives of numerous agencies and potential investors and there are surely benefits to come to Dominica. All travel and other expenses were met by the OECS and the CDE.

Should be of great interest to Dominica given our natural resource endowments and our efforts at exploiting geothermal energy. Will there be reps from the Dominican private and public sectors at the event?
