Officials prepare for 14th WCMF launch

Colin Piper, tourism director

The 14th edition of Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival will be launched earlier than usual this year.

The festival is one of Dominica’s premier events and is an avenue to showcase local music and culture to the wider world.

Director of Tourism Colin Piper revealed the event could be launched in May with at least three of the main stage acts, adding “and let people know that it’s on, let them know who to expect and let people know that we are in the planning stages.”

The World Creole Music festival emerged in 1997, and since then has attracted well-known musicians, not only from the creole-speaking region.

Last year, the festival was launched in August with renowned artists like Maxi Priest and Morgan Heritage forming part of event’s line up during the independence season. World-famous zouk band Kassav, and compas music star Sweet Mickey were among the other foreign acts on the main stage.

Locals WCK Band, Michele Henderson, Swinging Stars, Triple Kay International and the MFR Band also formed the line up for the 13th World Creole Music Festival.

The Festival is promoting Reggae Artists from all over the world and are not too interested in promoting local talent..Ras Judah,Atunyah,Mel-C,Dr.Silk just to name a few…When are we goin to give our local guys a chance on the big stage???

Comment to Rude Boy. Eddie Toulon did not name the World Creole Music Festival. I Mc McCarthy MARIE did. I am not a linguist but when I came up with the name creole I definitely knew what I meant and I definitely meant the music that is associated with the KWEYOL language as spoken in Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, French Guyana, Trinidad, Seychelles. I would readily admit that I am mad, but I am definitely not stupid to have meant something as patently absurd as using creole to mean a combination of any set of languages since every language would thereby be a creole; making the word meaningless and useless

This is one piece of fiction we need to get rid of to move the festival forward.

Hope organizers can deliver a great show…people still love WCMF and still big it up wherever they go no matter how disappointed they may get…we still know it’s worth!

I agree with all the comments especially with dat of gaza; the music festival is creole, not bam bam, blaw, they could be used as a pre festival concert and give us real creole music for the three nights, …. out there have enough creole band, ……… Louisiana, Sheshells, on the African west coast, Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique, eh eh, …….. Mr. Piper do your home work please and you will surely get support because people like the creole fess

RUDE BOY NO FEAR go learn what is the meaning of creole before you speak…to save you the time and work of finding what it means i did the work for you…A creole language, or simply a creole, is a stable language that originated from a mixture of various languages…that said it means that any country or island can have it’s own creole language. It does not have to be the french creole that we speak…Jamaica has it creole, Trinidad has it’s creole language and they don’t have anything to do with french..so when the theme “WORLD CREOLE MUSIC FESTIVAL” was chosen by Eddie Toulon and the rest it was with the mindset of this definition of the word creole. this is why from the inception of the event there has always been different geners of music including reggae…

Not interested in Creole Music Festival at all……I have taken a backseat on after last creole festival. It is just a waste of time and money….and waiting for the next band to perform…..Its time we make this a bit more professional and show-biz-like. The first thing is to declare the financial statement of the festival. …. what a joke.

i have always felt a festival can be promoted generally despite confirmed acts, as people come for the spirit of the festivities and as time and planning progresses new additions to the marketing and promotions could fall into place. In the past DFC would only start promotion if and when they confirmed the acts which were usually too late in my opinion, finally someone understands this is not necessary to bring visitors to experience our festival and island. Good work and looking forward to the early start.

They should also include the other bands in the country not only the bands which are said to be POPULAR! The organizers of the event needs to do something different, every year is the same! Three nights of Pulsating riddim

What about having an activity every night after the Lime’s Creole in the park with the Local Bands….Probably name it Pre Festival Warm Up….

So the Visitors here who we assume like to party can spend more and has somewhere to go! and also get a taste of our very own Boyoun Music. The show can start from 8 and end at 11!

    Easily!
