Deadline extended for 2010 Carnival Queen pageant

With only eight young women registered for the 2011 Carnival Queen Pageant, the Dominica Festival Committee (DFC) says it has no option but to extend the deadline. That deadline was today.

The pageant needs about seven contestants, all of whom are subjected to an interview, selection and elimination process. The elimination process becomes almost irrelevant with only eight candidates.

“Young women come out and take advantage of the opportunity to become ambassadors for your country,” encouraged DFC events director Natalie Clarke-White.

Meanwhile, reigning Carnival Queen Marcia Baptiste said today, “The Miss Dominica Carnival Queen pageant is an opportunity for young women to develop themselves, be an ambassador for Dominica and to contribute to our culture, so take it seriously and try to make yourself and others proud.”

She advised young women vying for next year’s crown to start acting in the role they wish to secure from the moment they are selected.

I believe the way that this year’s Queen was treated has left a sour taste in the other’s mouths. Lokk at the kind of support that she got when she represented the North, Also when she represented Dominica, her country ( or moreso the committee) did not give her the full support she needed, the support that they gave to Leandra, Marah etc. I guessed the girls read the statement of Marcia, and decided what the hell, if that is the support that we are going to get, why embarrass ourselves. FYI, doh say I say, but when the Queen went to a particular person on the committee begging for support he told her to get out in front of him. They that say, is not me that say. I only saying what I hear, but it have some truth in it eh.

There really isn’t any hard rule that says the Miss Dominica Pageant has to feature just (7 contestants), as the island is made up of several districts and parishes, Towns/Cities and that may well be a POSTIVE STEP in the right diretion to foster more inclusiveness in such pageants.

Case in point, representatives from all over countries like Canada/England/USA and numerous others in the Miss Canada, Miss UK/England and Miss USA/America compete in their respective competitions so it is not un heard of or impossible.

I say why not as it gives us a chance to showcase even more of our brainy, beautiful gems (ladies) to the world. :-D

Wake up my people! With 8 girls, they’re extending the deadline? They don’t think any of the 8 are suitable to represent and/or they have somebody else in mind and holding out for them to register. The 8 should take a stand and drop out.

Sweatheart I wish I could be more uptimistic, but all I will say for now is to do some research although you don’t have much time and perhaps speak with the current and past contestants and ask them, ‘woman-woman’, what their thoughts are on you being a contestant in the Miss Dominica Pageant.

Then with what I hope will be the honest advise these individuals pass on to you, pray about this, follow your heart and listen to what your inner voice is saying to you, more importantly speak with the people closest to you like your parents/siblings/extended, valued friendships/past teachers, etc, and ultimately make a decision on this.

Best wishes my dear and all the best making your decision.

Personally i believe the Queen show committee is pushing it, the young ladies are already late in preparing for the show and you are now extending the time phrame? Use what you already have! There are eight young ladies, start practicing with them and molding them into making a grand show for 2011.. STOP WASTING MORE TIME!!

wey-hey – you all must stop making statements. St. James warned us about the tongue yet we continue to talk and make statements. And Commit sins, We have to be careful. DFC themselves not all information has to go to the public, if you have eight girls, why do I have know dat. Just choose the girls from the numbers you have. Stupes……….

    @CONCERNED:

You have a very good objective. Wasn’t Marcia Baptiste faced with that same problem last year?
Why are the young women having the problem of getting a sponsor to take part in the Queen pageant? It is that sponsors do not know where they are, or perhaps people do not care about anything or anyone, anymore?

in order to get girls in this thing, they need to disband the entire Queen Show Committee, who continue to display preferential treatment to selected contestants every year….

if they were getting the things promised to them they would come, plus there is no integrity in judging.

Extend the search to allow Dominican Women or those of Dominican decent to register! I hope the Johnson girl from Morne Daniel is one of the 8.

MAYBE SOME OF THE YOUNG WOMEN HAVE NO SPONSORS. IF YOU KNOW ANY YOUNG WOMAN WHO ARE INTERESTED, OR YOU BELIEVE WILL BE A GREAT CANDIDATE PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM TO SIGN UP!
