Peebles Park comes alive with Christmas cheer

Santa Claus at Peebles Park

Peebles Park in Roseau came alive with Christmas lights on Monday night as several companies combined  their efforts to bringing holiday cheer to the city.

The event was part of an initiative by the newly formed Unite Dominica group.

Group member, Robert Tonge told DNO that the idea was to reinvent the Christmas spirit.

“Our first event is to put together this Christmas tree lighting where we thought would bring Christmas cheer that is something we don’t see every day in Dominica much now … to bring back the Christmas cheer,” Tonge said.

According to him, Unite Dominica is also planning a unity day event.

“The next event is a unity day event where we plan to bring people together hopefully at the same location where we have different people talking some of the best practices on the way we see the move forward,” he said.

The Christmas tree lights in the park event is expected to be an annual one and will last till December 31, 2012.

There are also other areas such as the bayfront, which is being considered for future attention, according to Tonge.

Companies which assisted in staging the event include DOMLEC, First Domestic Insurance Co Ltd, DEPEX Colour Lab, Royal Bank of Canada, Josephine Gabriel & Co Ltd, Autotrade Ltd, Perkys Pizza, Petro Caribe (Dominica) Ltd, HHV Whitchurch & Co Ltd, National Cooperative Credit Union, LIME Dominica Ltd, App Electricals, Ettiene Laurent and the Division of National Parks.

Excellent idea to the “Unite Dominica” group. Not too far away from Peebles Park is the Melville Battery quarter of Kingshill where beautiful ights can be seen. A simple drive up the Kingshill centre street just past the kingshill Baptiste Church or up Morne Bruce and look across to the south over in the Battery area and the splendour of a lighted neigbourhood at Christmas will come alive. Come see more lights.

Isn’t it ironic that DOMLEC is partnering with others and their business place doesn’t have any lights. Like a ghost town. DOMLEC can do more for Christmas in the community by giving certain discounts or concessions so that people can light up and make the spirit of Christmas come alive. I hope that the new owners of DOMLEc will initiate a Christmas program where people can be encouraged to light up in exchange for some concession on thier light bills or some sort of competition for the community e.g the best lighted community at Christmas etc. Run a competition for the best lighted neigbourhood or house. Something of sorts.

People will buy lights, taxes will be paid, DOMLEC will sell more lights and soem excitement will be created in the country over the lights.

Thanks “Unite Dominica Group” for bringing Christmas cheer to Roseau, since last Christmas 2011 was dismal for those of us who live in the Roseau area.

This is a wonderful wonderful idea. Its really heartwarming to see corporate citizens coming together to bring some Christmas Cheer. It is even better to know that this is going to be an annual event. Can you imagine, there had been no location that has been designated to go to see christmas lights. I hope that the nationals enjoy and appreciate this and not destroy. At the same time, keep the area clean. Do not litter!!! Blessings to all who supported this project.
