PHOTOS: Representing Dominica at Miami Carnival 2012

The Miami Broward Carnival Parade and Festival is one of the most popular events in Miami. Carnival celebrates Caribbean culture with music, food, arts and crafts, and an outrageously colorful mardi gras-style parade.

Dominicans turned out in large numbers to represent the island in colourful costumes, many portraying the island’s flag.

Captured on camera was Tourism Minister Ian Douglas.

The event took place on October 7.

Here are some photos submitted to DNO by Roy Williams.

what are you talking about brown sugar.yes,u can wear what you want whenever u want, not just for carnival, but u cannot just make yourself noticed by just jumping in all pics. u must represent yourself well cause you never know where the pics are going to end up.and when they do end up somewhere people have a right to THEIR opinion so if anybody feels offended by the comments made, do not just jump in front of all cameras. u not no celebrity. Do you have a good job or an education?

It is unfortunate that because a picture of Mr. Douglas was shown with a group of Dominicans in costumes during the Miami carnival many people took the opportunity not only to criticise the minister but Riverland mas.Riverland mas has been organized by Miss Elka Coolslatigue for the pass ten years.Every year dispite what kind of costumes we wear their are approximately one to two hundred Dominicans waving our flags. One would have thought that Elka and her family along Bro.Germain,Medina,Parben,Bogoroy and many other Dominicans living in Miami and Fort Lauderdale would be congratulated for our efforts but instead we were criticised for everthing even the food that was supplied. The Trinidadians controlled Miami carnival and never in ten years have I heard them malpalay their bands infact they have commented greatly about our band because over the last three years Dominica has presented the biggest bands. Last year we received the third prize in the individual category. Instead of the criticisms, come join us next year and make the band better and bigger.

    • October 11, 2012

I was unable to attend but I fully agree; instead of criticising be a part of the process. Isn’t that the best Dominican trait, criticise?

He benefited from the American Economic citizenship via marriage. Pay as you go! Thats the reason why after being in America for 50 years he finally got to return to Dominica in 2010. As a result of cleaning doodoo all these years he could not sponsor his poor family he left home. He did say in another post that his sister is the poorest person in Wesley. All the wealth he writes about is a result of frivolous lawsuits.

The Minister should have a Dominica flag, T-shirt,
etc. Even though he is having fun, sometimes at events like that, someone might see what he has on and might want to know more about Dominica. I am tired of people asking me if I am from “Dominican Republic”, ’cause most people do not know about “Commonwealth of Dominica” Remember he is a “Tourism Minister, every little bit helps.

What is it with some people in the diaspora who just believe that they have arrived? Talking about civilized people? Only uncivilized people behave like that. It seems like ignorance has never left some people even though they pretend that they know so much. It is a shame that we have forgotten where we came from. “We are in America and not Portsmouth.” When one has forgotten who he or she is or where he or she has come from that is a very serious concern. All I see being displayed is ego, ego, ego and more ego.

    • October 11, 2012

      @out of south city

I know what you mean. I have lived in Toronto, of Ontario, in Canada, for 38 years now; it has come to the point where I am sick of living here, because I just never adjusted myself to that kind of high Life, which is plagued with noise, haste, and rebel.

People do not know the peace of silence, they do not know anything about God, how can they know Love; they are simply rushing and pushing to their death, fighting to have the most of money and material assets, wanting to own the first production of technology as it comes.

I just want my Life back in my home country at my beautiful village of Giraudel, where people love me and I have love to give to them.

The reason I am still here, in Toronto, is because of my son, who was born here, I would not want to leave him, neither would I want to take him away from a Life that he was born into. But my time will soon come.

Imagine that that a certain person said to me that leaving Canada, to go back home to Dominica, would be putting my Life in jeopardy–can you believe that kind of sentiment in someone who is from Dominica as well?

Yes, those are the people who are of the top critics against their own country–here on DNO–good heavens.

You are right, some people need to know where they come from–regardless of the height they have acquired; most of the time those people will fall flat on their faces–it can be very embarrassing to call for help from those whom you have belittled–especially your own people.

This is so true, we should never ever forget where we come from, just because you get an opportunity to lived in the USA, CANADA, UK some of us look down on the people, back home you can never tell life is so very funny sometimes it hits you like a curve ball, when you least expected.

Dear Mr. Minister of Toursim, I notice you were here again for the Miami Carnival and there was a Dominican band on the road, and no mention was made of the WCMF again. This is the third year in a row you have failed to exposed Dominica to this diverse group and their followings. You have been told in the past about this. (a banner on the truck would help) Sir, why don’t you follow up on what you say you are going to do? Shame on you.

      October 10, 2012

For a banner for WCMF to fly on this truck there would have to be a sponsorship agreement, and the last time I checked the decision to sponsor does not rest only with the minister. I’m sure that if WCMF offered sponsorship Riverlandmas would be more than happy to fly their banner and provide advertisement at all MiamiBroward Carnival events. WCMF or anyone else for that matter has no authority to TELL the Minister to PUT a banner on this truck. Get with the program….shame on YOU for trying to place blame on the Minister without knowing all the facts…….

      • Citizen K
        October 10, 2012

quite agreed. Dominicans too like to tell people how to do their job but when placed in position they can’t do better.

      • smart
        October 10, 2012

RESPONSE: lets talk about the facts for a moment. 1. The Minister can foster the idea of sponsorship for a banner to be placed on the truck. 2. Riverlandmas can aid in the effort to promote island of Dominica through its event, I was in Miami for carnival the number of times the TRINI artists asked the crowd who was going to Trinidad for carnival was amazing don’t really need a banner. 3. Sponsoring riverlandmas sounds like a good idea but at the same time riverlandmas need to step their game up. There were a number of dissatisfied individual’s who paid to be part of a band and felt cheated by the product they received. Now my next question is what in gods creation was going with Riverlandmas for jouvert, four speakers and folks in plain white no designs or print all for $30. WOW I am impressed. Now back to the original intents here the Minister can do better to promote the country and the last I checked that was his job, so before telling people get with the program I believe you may to to do the same and if you’re a member of the riverlandmas organization same on you.

We are having our Dominica picnic her eon the 13th of this month, it would be funny if we see Ian Douglas show up without an official invitation.

You know how he like to be in thing uninvited oui!

He could have attended the parade, and dressed up in a Green Black & Gold custume like most people or perhaps he could have dresed up i one of his Dracular long sleave white shirts he usually ware when he going aboard the tourrist ships play minister.

He had to dress up in a red shirt, and the worst pair of Jens one ever saw, he had to bring his Dominica politics to Miami we do not need politics in our business here when we are celebrating our country events out here.

We live as civilize people together, we do not present our self as supporters of UWP, DLP, DFP, out here we left that in Dominica, he need to take off his that piece of red garbage off his back when he is attending our events.

We are in America, and not Portsmouth, we do not want Dominica politics to come to plague us here: we do not want the stench of Dominica politics in our nostrils Keep it all for you Ian in Portsmouth.

You can come to our picnic Ian invited or not,but please dress normal, no red shirt, and no Dracula costumes either.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

If you are Dominican residing in California, Northern California, or Southern California, from San Francisco to San Diego, or in Las Vegas, Nevada, and wish to attend the picnic, if you need information you have not yet obtained, you can obtained the same from me, or I can patch you through to Dr. Professor Frances Bellot who will fill you in.

The man has a “clearly branded Miami Carnival based band’s” t-shirt on him, and all of a sudden it is “him bringing Dominican politics to Miami”??!! Telemaque, i’m not sure who you are, but you definitely have a problem!

    • politically blind
      October 10, 2012

If you were not politically blind you would notice that his t-shirt had the inscription “Riverland Mass, Peppa sauce”. Just a google search of “riverland mass” would yield results on what exactly he was wearing. You sound so childish and petty to even comment on his Jeans.

If Ian shows up at your bbq he would be well foolish…which I think he is not.

You, Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque is simply put- just an idiot. You cannot even spell Dodds. Now you have it. Feel free to insinuate (imaginary) things on here about me. Write more to expose your trashy self.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        October 10, 2012

Well, shut up you fool, who cares about red, blue green, except idiots, and low minded uneducated peasants, and people at the top of the political party who live off the blood of ignorant color zealots like you!

Red, Blue, and Green, cannot put food in you all belly, nevertheless, plenty of you all prefer to remain here and hide from the hardship big eye Ian impose on you in Dominica, if some of you want to sport red, go back to where your red came from.

        Dominica!

Red is a gang color in United States anyway, so dressing up in red the blue gangsters, gang bangers the Cribs, will easily identify you and the band as bloods, and take you all out when you venture into their territory.

You see I did not trouble you; my message was for Ian Douglas alone, where you come from all of a sudden you little gang banger!

All some of you care for is the color of a piece of cloth, while Dominica remain poor, and your belly twitch, with fraught boiling in it; whiles the politicians live high and fat of the hog, and not even throw one piece of crumb from their table in your plate to help save your staving life.

Right now some of you are so happy to tell people how nice Ian is, and that ” I jump up wid him in de band eh, you know, he, he, he, is a nice man you know.”

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

By him a better pair of trousers before he leaves for his Kingdom in Portsmouth, perhaps he will remember you for your handout.

That’s what you get for calling me a fool, or idiot eh!

By the way, all the people who are spelling Dods with two ” D” are spelling it incorrectly.

I do not care who they are even the most educated of the Dods in Dominica, for your information it is a slave name originating in Scotland, if you goggle Dods you will find that everyone in Europe with that name spells it with a single D., try it and post what you discover here so that all can see which of the two of us are the idiot, and do not know what the heck they are talking about!

As far as I know you may even find an explanation as to whom first used two D’s, and why, you will find out it was misspelt, by one who stammers; (one who had a speech impediment).

The less educated Dominicans, always know more than anybody else even when it pertains to spelling their own name, I suppose now you are getting ready to spell god with two ” d’s” also; think about it.

And by the way, if you are wondering about the name ” Telemaque ” do not bother, because it originated in Senegal in West Africa, I researched that the same time when I research Dods!

My name exists on the continent of Africa, on the Ivory coast and everywhere, again some of you get education form goggle. So go ahead goggle Telemaque, perhaps you will discover when my ancestors first arrived in the United States, and the rest of the Americas, which include the Caribbean, mind you I am positive I am not living under any slave name, we did not come as slaves.

For your education look up the ” Vesey Denmark Insurrection ” and see what you discover, you will find his original name was Telemaque, and if you do not have time to goggle, and talk crap, you can go to visit a university in North Carolina where a head piece is in cement and bronze at the entrance of the university.

His history deeply rooted in American history, and slavery is now taught in universities through out the United States

I am different you see, so before you open your mouth, think about whom you are talking to.

You need to shut your mouth because you do not know what you are talking about!

Because they say that the journey of existence in this world can present us, in nature, as once a man but twice a child. Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe!

Well FETe you accused me of gossiping, something that is not of my attitude as a Christian, so now I am starting with you, and that is as far as I will go–especially that I ain’t telling no lie here–you ought to know that is true.

But boy, I love the no rating thumbs up and down, because I would never read the sentiment of those here, who would have given you the thumbs down, for sure. So are you going to try to change a bit? Because those people are right you know!

And according to yourself that is “repentance”, which you are desperately in need of, I wish that you would stop turning a deaf ear to that call from those who have seen your need for that change.

        I. E. (Note, or not written or not edited) you can have some fun with that. As for the one who suggest my age, you are forgetting that it is honorable to live to a ripe old age, especially when you have lived, and are living a clean good comfortable, and very prosperous life!

Each day you breath God oxygen, you are one day older, if you do not want to age like me, simply drop dead today, tonight, or perhaps you can drink that thing you use to kill the weeds on your banana plantation: in spite of how old you made me, I am quite sure that I look fresh and younger than you.

If I die tonight, my sons, daughters and grandchildren will not cry because I left nothing to them they will be happy to enjoy what this idiot left behind to them, and unless they squander it all they will live and enjoy a relax life for the rest of their natural life.

How many Dominican idiots do you know can say the same as I have stated?

        Can you?

        Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

“Well, shut up you fool, who cares about red, blue green, except idiots, and low minded uneducated peasants, and people at the top of the political party who live off the blood of ignorant color zealots like you!” Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

You really showed who the True FET is. I think that first paragraph should be about you. Your post described his color of his shirt as politically motivated, yet still you are accusing the writer of being an ignorant color zealot. Eb-eh look jokes.

It is obvious that grade-school-drop-outs like yourself welcome the opportunity offered by blogs like this to have a voice. You missed the opportunity when you had a chance. Spew words that make no sense, just because you can. Empty vessels makes the most noise…write the longest post.

It was Eleanor Roosevelt who said “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

Well this is so much fun, reading all of those sentiments here against the Great Francisco Ettienne Dods Telemaque.

With the thumbs down, which I am sure he would have gotten here, I wouldn’t be able to laugh my head off so well. But FETe, I still feel sorry for you.

And also, I am sure that there are many Dominicans like you, who have settled their Will for those whom they will leave behind–not you alone nuh! Ayelass, Ayelass, Ayelass!

I don’t know why they advertising Miami carnival in the first place. I was part of the Riverland Mas crew and believe me it was pure garbage! NEVER ME AGAIN! I so wanted to support my country but oh no! The organizers had some really upsetting fish broth. You could smell the fish from miles. The black pudding gave me a “mal Vat” the next day.
The boat ride itself was another story. Not to mention the road parade. Look a disaster. the truck kept stopping and stopping due to mechanical problems so many times. Those Dominican bands that were here were still “testing” when I went out to party with them on Saturday night. I still waiting for WCK to play (like usual…they were stopped by the cops).
When allu in dominica see those people pretended to have fun just know is a Big stone that there.
THE ORGANIZERS NEED TO COME BETTER THAT THAT. IT WAS A HOT MESS!!!!!!!!!
