Popular calypsonians to light up King of Kings stage

King Dice at a KOK event

Several of Dominica’s popular calypsonians are expected to perform at the 11th annual King of Kings Calypso Extravaganza carded for Saturday, August 18 2012 at VIP Lounge, 745 Ralph Avenue, Brooklyn, New York .

The star-studded line up includes the reigning and five time record breaking Calypso Monarch, King Dice and reigning two-time Road March King, Sye. Three-time Soca Monarch, Daddy Chess and last year ‘s first feminine monarch Tasha P  are also expected to perform.

Also on the line up are 2012 finalist, Stardom King of the Tent and La Plaine Monarch, Checko with his popular hit ‘AM, PM,’ Hunter and Scrunter.

A surprise former Calypso King of a different vocation has confirmed he will perform.

Veteran Kings Solo, Ency, Rabbit and for the first time in the United States,  the enduring Picky  are expected to perform a number of road march hits from “Dominica’s Calypso treasury.”

To complete this musical galaxy of stars from the nature isle and making guest appearances are newly crowned prince of Bouyon, Asa Banton, Asha Thomas, Qfm’s 2010 Q Talent Search winner and Know you Kulture culture group, a Dominican group based in New Jersey.

The musicians will be backed up by one of the oldest orchestras from the Caribbean, 53-year-old Swingin Starz and Master of Ceremonies Prince Wadix.

This annual Calypso showcase has been vastly appreciated by the Dominican and Caribbean Diaspora residing in the United States and Canada.

Good morning Dominica. I want to congratulate all the entertainers who participated in the show because it was a nice show. I also want to say thanks to Ms Clarke Even though we did not discuss bringing this show to St Thomas. I also want to say thanks to Swinging Stars for a job well done and that they can compete with any soca band.

Once again, there was no air condition in the place. How do you charge $40/$50 for a ticket and not give people a/c? This was my last King of Kings show. This is disgraceful. I can’t force her to respect her supporters enough to give us a/c, but I can surely keep my money in my pocket.

Heard it was Brakes. In my opinion as a soon to be priest he should try to stay out of these worldly events. Is not that it is sinful, its just that leaders of flock should concentrate on thier CALLING and leave the other events to those who are already indulged in it.

What about donating set of football uniforms for a high school in dominica that would cost only $450.00us. What about a barrel for xmas for the home for the ages which would cost $500.00us including shipping. What abouts ponsoring one child to high school a year including text book and uniforms, wich would cost $350.00us.

“last year ‘s first feminine monarch Tasha P are also expected to perform.” really?? what exactly is a feminine monarch???.
“Several of Dominica’s popular Calypsonians are expected to perform” Isn’t Several and and the word Calypsonians both plural words?? This intro should have been reworded.

On another note, the show seem to be the same every year with just a few additions, why are the same calypsonians every year.?? Think it is time for a reshuffle. Probably just have a Calypso show.

Hi, I have always wonder why we do not have such a show for our entertainers in St Thomas. The stadium is usually empty for two day of the last week of carnival therefore we should be able to rent it. Anyway I will see M s Clarke tomorrow and I will asked her about bringing the show to St Thomas.

    • Met Yo
      August 16, 2012

Boy Dominicans not easy eh…You see a picture showing 3 people, all sweaty and tired in a show after dancing all night, you done label “new yorkers” as looking beat up?

I take offence by your foolishness. Furthermore I notice someone added their piece about the grass is not greener on the other side. Of course, this is their consolation for the nonesense they continue to endure back home under the government.

I am a Dominican living in New York and I can tell you, contrary to what certain people may say, EVERYONE has the CHANCE to live a better standard of live here in the US as compared to back home. The people in the US who will say to Dominicans back home that “things tight” are those who came to America and lived above their means, resulting in they having debt upon, credit card, eviction notices and the whole works. OBVIOUSLY, when you go living above your means, you will end up in a hole.

You see, while there are many who will say “things bad” and “grass not greener”, there and MANY like myself who can testify and say yes, WE ARE SEEING OUR WAY BETTER living in the US.

In dominica, a decent pair of sneakers cost me 250 dollars. In New York, we talking 40 dollars.

In Dominica a full shopping cart of gorceries cost 450 dollars. In new york, I fulling 2 shopping cards with 200 dollars.

But when certain Dominicans come here and want to bling quick to run home and vacation and show off, take loan, buy gold chain, make vary…then later they sucking salt in America, they like to talk negative about the same America that awarded them so many opportunities!

America has endless opportunities, you just have to be smart and have a plan and know what you doing! Doh think is the gates of heaven you entered!

So yea, back to the Calypso. King of Kings this Saturday, BE THEEEERRREE

      Off I gone BOOOOM

well when u convert every thing it comes to the same dominica sweet but is when u have money am from dominica and living in part of america and i can say that i see my way better than if i was in dominica i hardly spend two weeks in dominica for vacation

      • Rasta Mystic
        August 17, 2012

Met Yo , I agree with you 100% !! All Dominicans worth is to criticize and most of them don’t have a frigging pot to piss in , people are in a club dancing and having a good time so it’s obvious they’re sweating from the excitement , but to go as far as people saying they look rough , I mean come on !!!

@ Food you better get your life , you come across as bitter !!

      • Met Yo
        August 17, 2012

        @Reality

Nope, it does not work out to the same thing when you convert at all. Take for example a pair of decent sneakers. 40 USD is 104 EC. In Dominica you would pay 250 minimum for that same sneaker.

The same scenario applies to clothes and food. And in any event, we should not be doing this conversion thingy because the salaries are not converted. It’s not like a teacher in Dominica would get 1500 a month, while a teacher in NY would get 552 a month. It’s dollar for dollar.

        August 17, 2012

well said met-yo..i would rather clean gutters in America than do it in Dominica cuz u know why??? becuz the pay is much better than back home..America is not a dreamland but if u work hard u can and will achieve alot..

      • El Presidente
        August 17, 2012

Met Yo there is some validity to what the person said and if you living in NY saw someone in DA you might say the same, because you are very negative to everything Dominican.

Its not just living above your means that et you in trouble in developed countries, the cost of living is higher and the standard of living is lower.

Don’t be so quick to bash Dominica.

Bossmam that is why I like a Jamaican ….he gets 86 JMD to 1 US dollars, a beer is 90 JMD but Jamica is the sweetest country in the world to him.

Byt this little negro get to NYC and he thinks he is all that and a bag of chips.

Someone made her personal opinion that the grass is not greener on the other side …and the fool said…he takes offense to that and then proceeded to tear his country apart and his country men
