An artiste who gained huge popularity during the golden age of Zouk in the 70’s and 80’s has died.
Eric Brouta died in Paris on Thursday at the age of 53.
The Guadeloupian singer/songwriter/producer/arranger is among an elite clique of Zouk musicians which includes Fred Fanfant, Edouard Benoit, Alain Gervais, Tanya Saint-Val, Tatiana Miath, Frederic Caracas, Luc Léandry, Francky Vincent, Zouk Machine, Chiktay, Jean-Jacques Gaston and others.
Brouta began his musical career in 1977 as a drummer in a small group called Smoke.
He played drums for Franky Vincent, Experience 7 and Taboo No. 2.
In 1985 he released a song in collaboration with Frédéric Caracas named ‘Cheche-mwen.’
He began his solo career in 1987.
Brouta became part of the Creole Caribbean music heritage with his hit song ‘Telephone’ released in 1988.
He also worked with legendary producer Henry Debs, the man credited for helping introduce Dominica’s indigenous music, Cadence, to a larger audience.
Brouta’s music was described as crisp and highly percussive but the quality of sing songwriting varies.
See video of his smash hit ‘Telephone’ below.
RIP Boss
my zouk man dat,RIP
Eric Brouta was also OPhelia’s drummer for many years after the untimely death of Phillipe Menard , Vikings first drummer. He is the one drumming on OPHELIA’s Album
” Live in Paris”. He was always a great sport and we will sadly miss him. WE last met at The Zouk Festival in Petit Bourg in 2010 when he performed on the same stage with OPHELIA.

Unfair DNO
DNO is fully aware that the thumbs up and down are not operable to some people and that they may be restricted from accessing it.
Too many people today, May 8th have been able to access it while some are not able to do so. I suppose, DNO’s favorite people.
I am not deceived for the Media has its technician(s) who can very well manipulate its Website and make it do exactly what it wants to do. Who are they deceiving? Not me! I know when this is done.
I have worked with various computer systems for some years and can tell one way or the other if a computer system is good/effective or not. Believe me! It has been proven true.
What type of computer system of an enterprise is this if it crashes and is not (fully) effective to its users/readers?
You are losing out on some intelligent responses and constructive advice (not garbage) which will also serve the government of all.
I bet some will be able to give this “thumbs up or down”.
Let us see DNO repair this situation ASAP and may it never recur.
Tous jous sec. The good old zouke days . Eric did his work. he had some real good songs that I still play in my car
DNO is there a problem with your thumbs up and thumbs down symbols? Seems they are not operative…
ADMIN: Thanks….we will have our tech team look into it.
I have commented about that. It appears some people are able to activate it and others are not. Why were some able to activate it and also today, May 8th? Last night, May 7th I was not able to do so.
I have stated it in the past that DNO needs to upgrade its Website. After writing the comments, they take long to appear on the screen.
No sense commenting if we are not able to activate the thumbs up and down.
‘Access”
RIP Mr. Brouta.
He performed at WCMF in 1999.
He possessed a unique voice and will truly be missed by Zouk lovers globally.
He made over a dozen albums.
Gone at the tender age of 53.
“Mwen ke devire” ( Zouk Chire) and “Telephone mwen” (Zouk Love) will stand tall as two of the greatest Zouk hits of all time .
Like greats Jeff Joe, Patrick St Eloi, Oliver N’Goma, Henri Debs, Jean Zenare( Chiktay) , Gilles Floro and others, gone the wild beyound but their illustrious works will continue to caress the frequencies of the francophone world.
RIP ERIC BROUTA
Another Icon of music Gone. The true manifestation of Caribbean unity thru his music has left an indelible impression with all genera of the music & those who danced to his music. May he rest in peace and his family morn with the fact that he is continuing to sing in heaven.
