Queen Ifrica to headline LIME’s 8th Creole in the Park

Reigning calyso monarch, King Karessah, performs during the launch of LIME’s 8th Creole in the Park on Thursday night at the Cove. Karessah is scheduled to perform at the event.

Female reggae superstar Queen Ifrica will headline the 8th annual LIME Creole in the Park.

LIME’s General Manager Jeffrey Baptiste sealed her appearance with an announcement at last night’s official launch of the “largest daytime event in the Dominica”. Other acclaimed performers like Peter Ram from Barbados and Kompa Kila from Guadeloupe will grace the stages.

“We are excited about this year’s 8th annual LIME Creole in the Park and we are fully committed to ensuring that patrons of this major event have a quality product to enjoy with friends and family during our Independence celebrations,” Baptiste said.

Jamaica's Queen Ifrica is the headline artiste for LIME’s 8th Creole in the Park.

CEO and Director of Tourism Colin Piper lauded the LIME initiative, which he said has undoubtedly contributed significantly to the tourism industry, lending to the island’s increasing number of stay-over visitors and amplified the interest of local and international interest in the Independence celebrations, and by extension the government-sponsored ‘World Creole Music Festival.’

Creole in the Park brings together Dominican culture with different genres of music, craft, food, local art and people in one location – the Botanical Gardens in Roseau.

This year’s event will be held from October 25 and staged daily from noon to 7 pm.

Tourism Minister Ian Douglas, in a brief discourse, spoke of Dominica’s unique Creole culture and committed his ministry’s support to the cause. The minister said the initiative is a significant contributor to the sustenance of creole in Dominica and dubbed it no longer a “fringe” event but rather one in a caliber of its own.

Chief Cultural Officer of Dominica, Raymond Lawrence, hailed LIME as one of the “greatest supporters of Creole” in Dominica.

“LIME you really need to be commended. You are assisting with developing Dominica by supporting culture,” Lawrence said.

He added that LIME has, in a very tangible way, demonstrated its support for Dominica’s independence and culture.

In committing LIME’s continued patronage of culture on the island, the telecommunication’s Dominican-born country head reminded, “I stand here as a Dominican first and second as the head of LIME Dominican.”

The lineup

Other musical acts that will be featured in this year’s Creole in the Park entertainment lineup include Triple Kay, Bouyon pioneers WCK, Derek ‘Rah’ Peters and his Riddim & Heat band together with the Fanatik band and the Original Serenade band. These, according to LIME, “will provide the entertainment required to get the crowd in party mode”.

Caribbean Vibes, Sub Urgan and Natural Vibes, will handle the reggae music lovers, while Freddie & Friends, Shades of Green, and Marie Claire Giraud “will satisfy the tastes of those who prefer the jazzy, lighter side of musical entertainment”.

The Kings of Cadance Midnight Groovers and the Swinning Stars – the longest serving band in Dominica – will return.

LIME will also feature 10 calypsonians, including reigning monarch Karessah, former kings Dice, Hunter, Observer and Daddy Chess. Making their debut at the event will be Sye, Tasha P, Soul Puss and Prosper.

“There are also three young and upcoming bands who are elated to be given the opportunity to perform at this year’s LIME Creole in the Park for the first time,” LIME said.

These bands are Digital Vibez, Xtreme Band and Machine Creole.

Creole int he park always better than creole festival itself. They manage to promote our local bands, bring in foreign artist and not stray too far away from the actual feel of creole. They manage to charge a minimal fee and still report profits. Now creole fest is the same bullshit year after year, prices keep going up, performances going down, we lacking the creole aspect of the festival, yet the reports are always that the show was at a loss. What a thing eh
