Q95fm Radio is pulling out all the stops for the “Champ of the Champs” final of the 5th Q Talent Search (QTS) competition scheduled to take place tonight.
Organizers say that the event, which will be held at the Arawak House of Culture, is expected to be a tough one.
“It’s going to be a tight competition, because you never know who might win. All of them have great voices,” Sales and Marketing Executive, Kamisha Dominique told Dominica News Online(DNO) in an interview on Friday.
“Their voices are much better coached and anyone can win because all of them have very strong voices…the returning champs should not feel like they have an advantage because they were all coached,” Dominique said.
A total of fourteen singers will compete in Saturday’s event, including four returning champs. They will all battle to secure a position in the top four.
Those returning to the competition are Carlene Simeon, Jazmine Laville, Earl White, Roggerson Jeremy and Willis Joseph. They will compete against newcomers Alicksia Thomas, Dahnella Georges, Jessica Riviere, Kenisha Hadeed, Leon Fontaine, Marsha Laurent, Sharon Gordon, Shernika Zephy and Tracey Johnson.
Dominique said through QTS, Q95 Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sheridan Gregoire is pursuing his vision of providing Dominicans with the best singing and performing talent in rural and urban communities, the opportunities to display their talents.
“They compete in two rounds, the first one is international and the second round is local,” she noted. “Most of them choose Calypso to compete in their local round…so I guess it builds their confidence according to how the crowd responds to them and you will find that these are the ones who will move on and take part in the national calypso competition that is the level of product we put out there.”
Asher Thomas captured the QTS Star Achievement Trophy in 2010, Shamica Sorhaindo in 2011, Rachael JnoBaptiste in 2012, and Leona Peters in 2013. The QTS U16 trophy was won by Ashanti Alleyne in 2012, Casim Birmingham in 2013, and Chelsea Prince in 2014.
A release from QTS organizers states that hundreds of young Dominicans participated in QTS competitions from 2010. Many of them have gone on to participate in national calypso competitions and cadence lypso competitions. “Several of these QTS Rising Stars have produced music albums, singles and music videos, which have gone down very well with local and regional music lovers,” the release adds.
The line-Up of special guest performances at this year’s final includes QTS winners Asher Thomas and Leona Peters, QTS Under 16 winners Aaliyah Christopher, Casim Birmingham and Chelsea Prince. Street Swag Royalty Dance Crew, 2014 Cadance Lypso King Anton Joseph and a special surprise guest performer will also perform.
The show is expected to begin at 7:30pm.
