The Mr. Caribbean Pageant, one of the most talked-about competition in Dominica, is on for the second time this year.

Seven men from various countries in the Caribbean will compete for the title of Mr. Caribbean at a competition to be held at the Arawak House of Culture on August 29th from 8:00 pm.

They are Jeffrey Burgin Jr. of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Paul Charles of Guyana, Ercil Charles Jr. of Antigua & Barbuda, Junior Thomas of Dominica, Alphonso Henry of Nevis, Chrispin Benjamin of St. Lucia and Michael Redhead of Grenada.

The contestants will compete in Performing Talent, Magnificent wear, Swimwear, Formal Wear and Interview segments.

The show is expected to be a chic display of natural masculine charm and will focus on talented males between the ages of 18 and 45 who are role models to their countries and possess ambassadorial qualities, according to Chairman and Brainchild of the Mr. Caribbean Pageant, Marie-Antoinette Mora.

She said the Mr Caribbean show was born out of the Mr. Dominica competition, which was held in 2012.

“It was founded against the backdrop of the disappearing male in society as it related to an avenue that showcases a tremendous amount of talent that abounds in this region,” Mora explained during the launch of the show on Tuesday.

She pointed to a host of shows, such as the Princess Show, Miss Dominica Pageant, Miss Wob Dwiyet pageant, among others, that allow women to express themselves in various formats and pursue future opportunities via scholarships but “there was nothing for young men.”

Mora also described the Mr. Caribbean Pageant as one other pageant that is putting Dominica on the map.

She revealed that the contestants from the other islands are coming to Dominica for the first time.

“So this tells you that this is also not just a cultural product, but it is a tourism product and very often we don’t see the value of our products, of our own home grown products until we leave our shores,” Mora stated.

She encourages the public to turn out in large numbers to support the contestants who have been working very hard over the past few months to put on a show of a lifetime in Dominica.

Meantime, Chief Cultural Officer Jacinta David said the pageant provides opportunities and benefits for the cultural industry in Dominica.

“I see this pageant as being in its embryonic stage, the birth of this pageant will create fashion designers particularly for male consumers, talent coordinators, trainers, makeup artists, costume builders, costume designers, speech coaches and the possibilities are endless,” David said. “I trust that this event will create an incentive for other young men to get involved in the creative industries at whatever level one may choose.”

She encourages everyone to support the Mr. Caribbean Pageant competition and urged the public sector to support and encourage men on island in positive activities by contributing in cash or kind towards the staging of the competition.

Tickets for the show costs $50 and are available at Prima Donna and Don’s and Divas.

The reigning Mr. Caribbean is Kadeen Tyson of Nevis.

I suspect we will soon have gay schools, gay churches, shops with marks saying “Gay only”, gay radio and gay TV stations and yes MOST likely, a GAY Ministry in Government. That gay thing is certainly going too far now.

Talk about fear-mongering and an ignorant slippery-slope argument. How on Earth did you go from a Mr Caribbean pageant, which is the kind of thing that occurs in many other countries, to segregation by sexual orientation? Not even nations that have legalised same-sex marriage have ‘gay-only’ segregation like what you stated.

And how is ‘that gay thing’ going ‘too far now’ when Dominica is a homophobic nation that refuses to grant the most basic legal protections to LGBTQIA persons? Peter…best you go to Paul for your arguments from now on, but then again, you probably think that’s gay, too. Lol.

Woe be unto them that call good evil and evil good. Dominica is a Christian nation and we will never tolerate the legalization of sodomite behavior. God said it’s wrong and we will follow HIM, not the Babylonian system.

        Selah!

Here, here, and well said! I was wondering the exact thing myself. I couldn’t understand where did this venomous and “overt homophobic outburst” came from, as one minute I was reading about a pageant, and the next it was a “blatant/ignorant/primitive/stone age/stuck in the dark ages” insinuation and slur on the delegates’ sexuality. It really isn’t important, in fact rather boring in my book that interested in one’s sexual orientation, much less casting unwarranted aspertions on individuals who’s done nothing wrong.

At least they’re not out there overdosing on cocaine, heroin and marijuana, like so many losers out there, but instead appear to be true ambassadors for their islands. Well done guys! Dominica should host more national and regional empowering pageants for boys and men! Hope it goes well! HATERS…………enlighten yourselves via http://www.mrworld.tv

I think we should commend the gentle man for being brave enough to represent our country at the show. Especially knowing how Dominicans can be so petty and judgmental. Age is just a number. Who knows what will be the outcome of the show?!? What matters is that someone is brave enough to do what many don’t have the guts to do. You have my 100% support Mr. Junior Thomas. Thank you for representing our country.

I agree he looks substantially older, but if he qualified, he qualified, so we should be prepared to support his attempt to bring some good publicity towards Dominica if he wins.
