Signal Band releases new single

Dominica’s new and upcoming group, Signal Band, has released a single just in time for Carnival.

The single “For de Karnival” was inspired by request from support and well wishers, according to band leader, Sheldon Alfred.

“Though we have admitted to all well-wishers that we are young and know we may have a long way to go, we are still envisioning what it would be like if Signal Band had to hit the streets for Carnival,” Alfred said. “As a result of this vision, ideas came to mind musically and lyrically.”

Signal Band started in August 2010 “basically out of boredom,” according to Alfred. Band members range from 16 to 24 years and are from Goodwill, Kingshill and Elmshall.

The band has performed at events such as Creole in the Park, Mayfest, Eastfest, opening of Carnival City, various school events and many village feasts and festivals.

For the new single Clint Henderson of WCK fame and Wayne “Benji” Benjamin of Triple Kay International were brought on board. “We figured it would be ideal to bring on board two prominent and well known performers of Dominica’s own Bouyon music, who are also well acquainted with the streets on a typical carnival day,” Alfred said.

“For de Karnival” was written and performed by Darvin Labad, Clint Henderson and Wayne Benjamin. It was produced by Dernel Green and Sheldon Alfred.

Alfred provided background vocals and the song was mixed and recorded at Clint Henderson Studio.

Signal Band is expected to perform at Ms. Plus Size & Elegant on Febuary 1st, Prince & Princesses on February 2nd and DSC Mas Jamboree on February 7th.

I can see some potential there, someone should go back and revamp some of the real old school bouyon beats. This beat, though iconic of bouyon, was almost the reason for me not wanting to listen to the track. Try using some more authentic soca music in your tracks. My true pleasure with the single is that there was an apparent use of lyrics in the single. I disagree with the person who who commented that Bengi was the star as I personally feel that he should have never been included.
