Six young ladies from various communities in Dominica will vie for the title of Miss Mayfest 2015 in Marigot.

They are Christel Durand, 20 of Castle Bruce; Kimberly Pioche, 18 of Calibishie; Candice Simon, 18 of Marigot; Nakisha Joseph 18, of Wesley; Davia Joseph, 17 of Kalinago Territory and Aquenel Victorine, 20 of Goodwill.

The contestants were introduced at the official launching ceremony of Mayfest 2015 last week.

They are expected to compete in four segments: Talent, Swim Wear, Evening Wear and Question & Answer.

The event will be held at the Marigot Fisheries Complex on Saturday 2nd, May from 8:00 pm.

Vice President of the Marigot Development Corporation (MDC), Ellsworth Prevost said when the event was introduced nine years ago, contestants from Marigot were the only participants, however things have changed.

“Over the years we expanded it out into the neighboring communities,” he said. “So we have had contestants from all the way La Plaine down to Calibishie. This year we will be having a contestant from Roseau participating in Mayfest for the first time.”

According to him, the event has been a very good platform for young ladies in the Marigot and North Eastern area who are interested in participating in other pageants.

“It is an elaborate event that prepares young ladies for future participation in pageants,” he stated.

Miss Mayfest 2015 is being organized by a group of women from Marigot and the Diaspora.

A new aspect to the show this year is the People’s Choice Miss Photogenic Award, where those interested can vote for their favourite contestant atwww.extradm.com/may/fest.

Patrice Dorsette is the reigning Miss Mayfest Queen.

    List of pageants in past two yrs;
Miss Dominica, Mayfest, Miss DSC Jamboree, Miss pleasant plump, mademoiselle francophonie, St Mark and St Luke, Carnival Princess, Miss Teenage, Madam Wob Dwiyet, Mother Queen, Teachers , Beauty of aging etcc..

Pageants are ok but it seems its the only thing we push these talented young women into. Come on , there is more to be done than a million pageants a year.

Women in technology, women in agriculture , women in medicine, women etcc – Let us show these young women that they are more than these ridiculous pageants and start showcasing the other side of female success. We could agree to disagree that the roots of many of these things were fueled by misogyny and a hypersexual scoiety.

I concur. These pageants are just too many. Our young ladies are worth more than exposing their bodies to the world. Yes, I agree that we need to push our young ladies in other fields that will enhance them and further their mental development so that they can contribute to life positively.

      PEACE

Too much of this crap in Dominica – Miss this, Miss that !, Sewo this ! Sewo that ! Is that all we have to offer the young people of Dominica? Our Dominica society has decayed beyond recognition – alcoholism, cocaine, murder – poverty stricken, greedy politicians, lack of education
Its a mess and we find another pageant . Tell me how many new pageants there have been in the past 20 months

    Sadness

You find Dominica have too many pageants?? What you would say for Barbados now?

If you don’t like pageants, just keep it moving. Why did you even bother to click on the page? smh…there’s always a killjoy.

Thats your argument? Look at Barbados – really? Seriously? There are many issues in Dominica that allows these women to be objectified – we have not even touched the surface on the issue of abuse in Dominica. All we are saying is lets do more for these young women than pageant after pageant.

They clicked on the page so they could make the point that they made which is that there are just too many of these pageants going around which showcase only superficial qualities in our young women when in fact they should be engaged and encouraged to engage themselves in more meaningful and positive activities.

I say lets not make these women feel like they can make a change, people always complaining nothing to do on the island. i suspect you’re a priest. Either you make a positive contribution and suggest something positive or SHUT UP.

Please please please these young people are doing something, raising their self confidence and self esteem. do you prefer they stay home and make babies like rabbits and and be taken advantage of or participate in a contest win something and fell like they did something good?

“If you don’t like pageants, just keep it moving.”— and in the same vain if you don’t like the comment just “keep it moving”.

you know that democracy thing goes both ways right? those for the pageants and those against.
