Smokie Cut releases new single

Cover of single

Local songwriter and singer Smokie Cut has released a new single.

According to the artiste the new single, “Friends with benefits,” is different from the typical music that is being produced in Dominica.

“I just wanna be different than the average artist by bringing something new to the table,” he said but also admitting that he has written a couple bouyon songs.

The artiste said he wants to use his lyrics to speak directly to his audience, allowing them to sympathize with him. He said his music features his personality as a man who would go the extra mile for those he loves.

Born Jihad Jean-Jacques, Smokie Cut has been featured at many local entertainment shows and has opened international shows for the likes of G Whizz, Popcaan, Gaza Slim, Busy Signal, Christ Martin and Lisa Hype.

In 2009 he recorded and directed a video for one of Jamaica’s entertainment programs REtv entitled “Doe watch me watch yourself.”  In 2010 his hit single “Nah back down” was released and in January Smokie Cut released a tribute song and video to his friend Omara Small formerly known as Mwanga Freeman who was shot execution style on September 17, 2010.

The song was widely distributed on Facebook and it highlighted the pain he went through as a man losing a close friend.  In April 2011 he released a song celebrating his mother, which included his first official video with a story line. It also featured his mother.

what does that have to do with anything?! don’t allow your jealousy to speak for you. they are a happy couple. check yourself and not them. typical dominican. all of an artiste songs can’t be based on their personal life. this is reality! “friends with benefits” is all around us! instead of pointing out the little negative you see… give constructive criticism or applaud the individual on their achievement! smh

I hope smokie cut can take constructive criticism . I have watch him perform at many shows an 1. He need more stage presence an 2. He need how to engage the crowd more . Apart from that with good managers he could reach far

From my knowledge or what i’ve heard from reliable sources this was just a mere coincidence. He did not write, record nor release this song because of colton t. I’m sure everyone realized that he released this song via youtube,fb etc.the day after dno published colton’s release of his song “friends with benefits”. How could he have time to write and master his song within a few hours??! Yes, they are the same titles but the story lines a totatlly different. In my view Smokie’s version is more catchy and the lyrics focuses on the title

boring!!! Not impressed. another black fella disrespecting women and not even setting a good example for the male youths of Dominica. I see why alot of these “less than men” spieces from DA are the way they are. Instead of the artist encouraging commitment and honest relationship, he there singing about benefits and incinuating infidelity. ugghhhhh these peeps are so fake… well I’m glad there 15 others like you out there so no one will take your work seriously.

      May 8, 2012

robin it’s obvious that you have no sense of “music taste”. wake up! we live in a world where “friends with benefits” is an everyday norm. let’s not be hypocrite to the fact. a real artiste writes his songs based on reality. there’s nothing wrong with that! i think you’re taking it to serious

some dominicans are so foolish!!! The press release was obviously sent to DnO for publication. What did yall think, that DNo broke into someone’s house and stole this press release or DNO held someone at gunpoint and tell them “give it up sucker”? jesus christ! thing is they hide behind the computer and put crap in the comments instead of showing up at the offices so they can get some free tutoring in commonsense.
