Stardom Calypso Tent goes to Toronto

stardom torontoThe Stardom Calypso Tent is getting ready to slam Toronto on Saturday in what organizers describe as “the greatest show ever” and the first of its kind in that Canadian city.

One of the main organizers of the event, Frances Delsol of the Commonwealth of Dominica Ontario Association, told DNO that the show will give those who cannot travel to Dominica the opportunity to experience calypso first hand.

“Not all of us who live in Canada have the opportunity to go back during carnival time, or to experience it firsthand,” she said. “So this gives us an opportunity to not only to see the calypsonains up front, but to hear them.”

Calypsonians who are expected to hit the stage are former monarchs Hunter, Scrunter, Karessah, Daddy Chess, the first Female Kaiso Monarch Tasha P, the fast rising sensational and spicy Black Diamond, Loogers, Stardom’s former Monarch of the Tent Checko, Web and veterans Jamma B, Dyno, Senator, Intruder and Bassie along with last year’s Road March King Sye and more.

They will be accompanied by Dominica’s longest serving and greatest calypso band The Swingin’ Stars.

Delsol said the event is being marketed to other Caribbean nationals and Canadians, not only Dominicans, and is an excellent opportunity to provide exposure for Dominica.

She noted that the show will take the art-form to a different level since many people don’t realize that Dominicans sing calypso. “I think we in Dominica have some world class calypsonians and I think that if they get a chance for some Canadian exposure it’s going to help calypso in Dominica overall,” she said.

The show will take place at the OFL Patio Banquet Hall, 15 Gervais Drive, Don Mills, in the Eglinton area of Toronto.

I am happy for Sour-sour making strides on the international scene. It nice to know that the patrons out there have been asking for his performance. The overseas market is a good thing for the musicians. He make a much better ambassaodor than the ant e in the tale of clide.

People please stop using Dice to promote political division. He is the calypso king of Dominica, not a political party. The young man stated on my presence at the show in NY, that we should not segregate, so please cease from the political malice. Remember the great Nelson Mandela spent27 years to put an end to apartheid, stop this political madness. Shame on all those guilty of instigating division in calypso.

      • September 13, 2013

Please dont compare Dice situation with Mr. Mandela because it’s far from that it was unfortunate that Dice couldnt make it but remember that CANADA have a tough Immigration Policy and no one is above it.
I’m a fan of Dice but stop so stop pretending and instead face the FACTS as it is.

It’s great that they sponsoring the event will expose our culture to the North American market and hopefully our calypso will go international and more money for our calypsonians. All the best guys
