“Sweet sixteen” edition of Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival to honour late cadence-lypso Icon…

Jeff Jo

The sixteenth edition of the Dominica World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) scheduled for October 26-28 at the Windsor Park Stadium will pay homage to cadence-lypso icon, the late Jeff Joseph. The festival which started in 1997 to provide a major cultural platform for Dominica’s emerging tourism sector will be held under the theme: “Homage to Jeff Jo…Sweeter at 16.”

In honour of the famed cadence-lypso legend, the Dominica Festivals Committee, producer of the annual event, is working with a number of local and regional artistes to honour Jeff Jo for his sterling contribution to Dominica’s music culture and for his many years of dedicated service to the island’s cultural and artistic development.

Several of the acts scheduled to perform on the festival stage are expected to incorporate Jeff Jo’s music in their repertoire and add to the week-end long celebration honouring one of the region’s premiere musical talents. Members of the original Grammacks, the band which would make Jeff Jo famous are also scheduled to perform on the final night of the festival as a mark of honour and respect to their fallen leader and musical icon.

Telecommunications giant, Digicel- the Bigger, Better network – and the Government of Dominica will once again be the headline sponsors for the staging of the WCMF. After sixteen successive years, the WCMF has emerged as the most diverse and indigenous music festival in the Eastern Caribbean, featuring many of the top regional and local Creole musical acts as well as other forms of popular music from the Caribbean and Africa.

The sweet sixteen edition of the WCMF will feature a line-up of top Zouk, Haitian Compas, Cadence-lypso, Soca and Bouyon acts over the three nights of pulsating rhythms.

Today is 08/31 and the full line for WCMF has not been released and we wonder why the festival is failing.

Should DFC receive our hard-earned tax money from Govt. every year, yet DFC would not give, or publish any statemnet of accounts? Where is the one for the WCMF 2011? Dominicans, when will you all care?

Where is the financial statement for the 2011 WCMF? How much did DFC receive in all? How much did DFC spend? Was there a loss? Was there any profit? How much? The public need to know those things. The other bodies who are giving to the DFC for WCMF, but are not forceful in demanding financial accountability, are encouraging bad business.

WCMF “Sweet Sixteen,” if is a tribute for Jeff Joe, all the former Dominica cadence bands and/or groups should be invited to participate. Surely, there is more than enough Dominican musicians and groups, who would eagerly put everything, bring all their talents together, their experiences in that popular Dominican genre of music, and put a fantastic show for WCMF 16, in memory of Jeff Joe. A couple Cadence/Compa/Zouk bands from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti and a Kweyol group/band from Africa, Nasio Fontaine and another local reggae artist/band, could complete the list.

Too much money leaves the island after WCMF, (payments for tickets, boarding and lodging, performances), at a time when visitors are flocking in to enjoy independence celebrations as well. Are some of the foreign artists really bringing in many more visitors as people claim? Yet they are paid tens of thousands of $US.

WCMF 2012 should be used to propell, to give viguor to, our internationally renowned CadenceLypso music again on the world stage and to boost that part of our cultural Industry. But who listens? don’t kill the vision.

Is it too late? Where is the Financial statement for WCMF 2011?

Good Idea. Jeff deserves alot of recognition! But how serious are we about this festival after 16 years? why is everything so casual? How long does the world have to wait for the schedule of events for the three nights to be posted. This is supposed to be a world festival, yet two months before we still do not know what the full line up is? Dominicans will be there, we know, regardless. But how do you expect to market the events overseas if this is not available? Obviously overseas persons need more information to plan appropriately, or even decide if its attractive enough. This is quite obvious. Many of the links on the website remain dead. How are persons encouraged to come see the event if the official website is not up to date and has only bits of information? I will not even begin to talk about buying tickets. 16 years is a long time to wait for better organization. The true fans deserve better. Alas I can’t even tell a potential fan what the schedule is!

I AM HAAPY THAT THIE FESTIVAL IS BEING NAMED IN HONOR OF JEFF JO…..but what about LOFTUS EMMANUEL? I AM VERY much distirbed that the memory of LOFTUS is being dissed by the organizers is this the way we treat our heroes? jeff and Grammacks might not have been possible to the extent that they were werent it for the efforts of LOFTI.

i need not say more on dat matter

    AH MAGWAY SAR

PAT AARON IM making an apeal to you to honor the memories of two HARLEM CULTURAL ICONS through MAS CAMP 2013 They are RUPERT LLOYD and LOFTUS EMMAUNUEL and a post humus award shall be considered for these two heroes served the nation long and hard with distinction.

so the RUPERT LLOYD AND LOFUS EMMAUNUEL MAS CAMP 2013 is in order!!!! YOU COULD ALSO consider writing some songs for each as a tribute to them also.

This is a creole festival where we suppose to celebrate and promote our creole heritage and culture yet the theme is in English. This makes no sense! The entire week and festival should be in creole!

      @Creole
When will people like you understand that creole does not mean our french patois. Creole is what is from a country. So french patois is our creole, cocoy is Marigotians creole, Bouyon music is our creole music , reggae is Jamaican creole music.
Every year this explanation has to be given

      • Really
        August 30, 2012

So why is it being promoted so heavily in French speaking countries. The comment talks about the event not the music!

The word creole means several things but our own creole is centered on French culture.
