Tasha ‘Tasha P” Peltier has created history by becoming the first female to win the Calypso Monarch title – in 54 years.

The Swinging Stars front-line singer also become the first calypso artiste to win three titles in one season. She captured the Calypso Queen and Stardom Monarch of the Tent titles earlier this season.

And now she is playing the dual role of ‘King and Queen’ of Dominican calypso.

The results were announced at around 2:30 a.m. at Carnival City in Pottersville, Roseau.

Tasha P’s songs “It’s Woman Time” and “Let Children Be Children” were written by Ian Jackson and Gina Letang, respectively.

Four-time Calypso Monarch Dice placed second after a return to competition; defending champion Karessah placed third and Checker copped fourth place.

Soul Puss received the most improved calypsonian award.

The other participants in the final were Explosion, Leandra, Lord Lugar, Peter Prosper and Sye.

Lord Lugas and Peter Prosper were competing in the finals for the first time.

Excellent job my dear and you did exceedingly well and you will be always be remembered for beginning to break down the barriers that still exist in the world dominated arena of ciaso.

Hopefully more little girls, teens and adult females will see what you have accomplish and beieve they two can achieve just that if they are will to work hard and not allow any status quota to hinder them.

Well done once again and loads-a-congratulations to you Tasha P and here’s to going from strength to strength.

You performed brilliantly and did all all proud!

I love Tasha and I congratulate her but DNO, she is not the first to make history by winning three titles in one year…Hunter with Carib bacchanal won: Roadmarch king, STardom king and National monarch in 1998. Dice did the same, I think it was with Animal farm.. History part is her winning as a female but not that line: The Swinging Stars front-line singer also become the first calypso artiste to win three titles in one season. She captured the Calypso Queen and Stardom Monarch of the Tent titles earlier this season is incorrect.

A deserving crown after two spectacular renditions . Tasha-P in my view was untouched in both rounds and infact she was un-desputed on her way to the crown . Tasha in my knowledge of calypso writing were given two dynamic songs to perform , and like many of you expressed politics is certainly not the only issue we face in this country , whilst we talk politics families are being broken , lives are being shattered , women are being abused and neglected , children finding it hard to survive . So Mr Aaron and the order writers must take a leaf from Doctor Letang and others who wrote for Tasha-P , ( education , politics , religion , poverty , abuse , violence , juvenile delinquency , tourism , science , culture ,agricultry and industry etc ) just a food for thought i wanna hear better calypso next year not same taste and sorry Dice i told you in your face that you’d not make it , all of you have the same taste , Tasha-P had the story and the recommendations . Great job young bull , get some honey and fix that voice , however you did run out of ideas , you had no conclusion to your song . Soul-Puss great job and in my view the first runner-up was certainly to be given to you not Dice . Karesa keep on writing , great efforts , however change the tunes a lil they’re same from ” steel under-wear ” fortunate for two years , with Tasha P around man have to come proper cause she sings of a high standard .

Politics, politics, politics…need I say it another time? Yes, I agree that calypso is social commentary but I find it very boring that the majority of our calypsonians, especially those who hail from a certain camp, only sing about politics. I mean come on, a calypsonian has to present two songs for the competition and both songs are about politics; presented in a different way. I think this reflects a lack of creativity, bankruptcy of ideas and it also shows that our writers, as good as they may be, seem to be too consumed with politics. We get bombarded via the media, so it is not like the “issues” are not being “brought to light”.

So is politics our only malady in Dominica? and are our politicians the only ones doing wrong? Our calypsonians call on our church leaders to condemn this and to condemn that. But do we listen to our church leaders when they call on us to live righteous lives? How about the breakdown in family values, how about the men in a country who abuse women and the women who abuse the men; all they want is a finance minister, selling their souls and their bodies for a monthly allowance! I can go on and on; not that I am the most righteous among men, but calypso writers need to think outside the box and begin writing songs that can be marketed outside of Dominica. There have been calls for our calypsonians to perform in the other islands; but can they really do so when all they sing about is our political leaders?

Tasha P’s writer did well by choosing to write on non-political issues and she was able to convincingly capture the crown, or should I say the title? The design of the physical crown that was placed on her head is in my opinion, neither here or there! The title is what matters to me. A lesson to the King Maker. I applaud your skills and your commitment to the art form, but the question I wish to poise at this time is; can you continue writing for so many calypsonians pretty much on the same topic and then have them go out competing against each other, but you having the final say as to who becomes the monarch by the material you place in their hands and the support your team gives to them? Maybe, just maybe, it is another writer’s time! Dominance or authoritative control in any area, be it politics or calypso is not right. We worry about a political dictator, but how about a calypso dictator, shouldn’t this have been one of the ten commandments of calypso?

What is wrong about singing songs that relate to the everyday corruption that has engulfed the leaders of our governement? Fed-up, you are too lap-sided, I know the truth is what’s killing you. Get over it, or may be you can’t, because it is people like you who perpetuate the on-going corruption. Tasha P won because her song reflected what children ought to be, and it was her outstanding performance on stage. Calypsos are just another avenue to get the messages to the masses.

They have heard so much of politics as broadcasted and printed through the Media that they do not want to hear any more of it. You know, “Too much of one thing is good for nothing.” It becomes boring, like a broken record.
For once it is good and worthwhile singing about other concerns.

Let’s face reality… What is our beautiful Dominica becoming. Yes we r entitled to our opinions and we do live in a democratic country, but where is our sense of love and respect for each other… We ridicule good things when it happens. it is time to open up our eyes and think and act responsibly… Tasha delivered her songs with nuff emotions… Her song titles were very sensitive ones… and she did do justice with it… I support caiso fully. I support the development of my country as much… And I had a swell time… Franklyn Moses U r a dynamic entertainer! Judges this year u judged fairly. Enjoy the carnival, it is ours!!! 25. It's Time
    March 6, 2011

It’s women time? A woman is the high-handed SPEAKER of the House of Assembly, blocking pertinent, genuine questions to be asked of the Govt. It’s women time. There are two women parliamentarians in the present DLP Govt. that have allowed themselves to be overpowered and manipulated be their men counterparts. They continue to blindly support corrupt practices and BAD Governance which seriously marginalises women as well as the men folks.

Those two women parliamentarians, as well as many others among us, have yet to denounce any wrongdoings or illegal acts committed especially by those in Public Office, although there are facts and evidence to prove that a few in High Places have been and are engaging in irresponsible, corrupt activities. There are many women who continue to support an illegal Leader of the country knowing that the said person lied to Dominicans and the world, women and women alike, disobeying the Constitution about his DUAL CITIZENSHIP status.

It’s women time of Course. Because there are many Dominican women who fearlessly denounce wrongdoings and advocate consistently against abuses and corruption of all sorts. But the million dollar question is not about the GENDER and whose time it is, but whether the Dominican people, on a whole, will take the courage to speak out and take the necessary action against the crimes, abuses, illegal acts, dictatorship practices, trickery and nepotism happening right here in our country.

It is a serious degrading policy that are having negative impacts against men and women to create ‘dependency through hand outs, ‘gifts’ or trinkets. Many of our women are still abused by men giving handouts to them and material things, instead of creating opportunities for their upward movement and interdependence Women in whatever organisation and institution, public or private, of whatever creed, race or social status, in calypso or otherwise, employed or unemployed, must find the inner strength to denounce those ills as well as other corrupt acts in our society that are surely negatively impacting their lives.

If this person, “It’s time”, was a positive, right thinking Dominica, one who wants to support the young people of our country, a country that they may want to convince us that they love, they would spend some time congratulating the winners, encouraging those who did not make it, complimenting the Calypso Association on putting on another splendid event, something they have been doing consistently year after year.

Shame on you for being so consumed with politics. One agrees that you have a right to your opinion, but give me a break, we can spend some time lighting a positive torch as opposed to always looking to blanket everything into the darkness that we hold in our hearts, how venomous can we be?

This is why Dominica will always remain at the bottom, it’s with uneducated individuals like you who sticks to the negativity. Then guess what this is your level and I understand. I have listened to the way that Tasha articulates, and without being insolent to the other kings she appears to be well educated and I know she will be an outstanding ambassador to the country. With the individuals who have a difficult time in interpreting the song title its woman time then there is no simpler way that it can be broken down. Well done Tasha, and I can’t wait to meet and salute you in the Military. Whoooah!
On another note I have nothing personal against dice, inspite he is a great performer, but the question is can he reresent the country as a good embassador. One of our main set backs in the out side world is our character.

Woman Time indeed!!!! heeee heeee :) Even though Tasha’s style and delivery is hardly what we consider the ’embodiment of calypso’ that cannot be measured against the likes of Mighty Karessah or Lord Loogerz, she is on par the best female vocalist to come out of DA. Pertinent well written lyrics with her first song that will strike a chord in every parent’s soul, but I thought the ‘crying’ thing was a tad pretentious and unecessary. The conciousness of her Woman Time anthem will appeal much to the delight of our feminist quarter. Nevertheless she deserves the recognition. What a great upset after 26 years!! Upset & History indeed!!! Hearty Congrats to Tasha-P!!!

Congratulations to the Calypso Queen. You have done well!
Wow! Many opinions, pros and cons. It is said that, “As many heads there are it is as many opinions there will be.” Some of them we should take with a grain of salt. Others not.
Ever since as those stories in biblical days in the Old Testament, women were prominent. Many of them outshone men.
A woman bore The Word Incarnate, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Obviously, she had to be a woman. :) We should all learn a lesson from her and her obedience to God. Check The Old Testament for those women of The Bible, their effort and strength whom we should emulate.
Throughout the years women have been discriminated against in many ways. However, have they allowed themselves to be discriminated against? Is it their fault, specifically in this era?
God gave women intelligence. Granted, women as well as men, each in their own way have their individual role to play in life. Women must not assume the role of men and men must not assume the role of women. It will be questioned, what is the role of men and what is the role of woman. My only response is note our parents, grandparents, etc. role of those days.
As the years progress and times have changed, it appears that those roles have changed, except for procreation. Today jobs which were considered for men only, women are assuming those roles and capably. This is the era we are presently residing in and which I will not dispute about.
The matter of singing religious and contemporary songs including calypsoes, are not particularly meant for men only. I do not think they ever were. It is acceptable that women should also sing those songs. It should be no exception or feat for women to compete with men specifically on this basis.
Pertaining to the songs: It’s Woman Time” and “Let children be children”, I am looking forward to purchasing them. They are appropriate ones specifically, Let children be children.
Some years ago a T&T woman calypsonian had sung “Women Rising.” Women have been rising years ago. I do believe that she opened the door, so to speak, for women, some of whom have been too shy to progress specifically in this field.
There is a non-profit organization which was established a few years ago in Toronto. The name is “Arising women”, to the effect, teaching women to be positive, to be proud of themselves, etc…
Those who criticize the 2011 Calypsonian pertaining to “Its Woman TIme”, consider the young girls. They need to be told and to be reminded that one day they will be adult women. Hopefully, it will teach them to conduct themselves appropriately and to remind them about their future role as women in society wherever they may reside.
I would think that this song is meant for also young girls and yes, some adult women who do not possess confident that they can achieve much more than they presently are.
I am residing in wintry and snowy Toronto. I do envy you in the hot weather and enjoying the carnival season.
I wish every one of you Dominican residents and visitors an enjoyable, safe and free of any abnormal incidents carnival. I am present in spirit.
Thanks to DON reporting, it has brought us – myself – closer in heart to Dominca.
DON you are doing an excellent job! I do share what I read about with others who do not have access to the Internet.
    God bless everyone of you!

You stay there with your stupidity. It’s woman time, no more will we let you guys strangle us with your control of the bible. I am a born again believer of the bible, and it says love your wife as yourself, and Almighty God said to Adam of Eve that she will be his help meet. Gone are those days when we were treated as slaves, and sex slaves at that. We are in the women era[ WOMAN TIME] whether you like it or not,
    MY CONGRATULATIONS TO TASHA P

    • I'm just saying....
      March 6, 2011

my dear women are still being treated as slaves by their husbands and sex slavery especially among women are on the increase pornography, human trafficking just for sex, child molestation , teen pregnancy, check the internet for the facts no amount of songs is gonna change the world

      • Muslim_Always
        March 7, 2011

@ minding, you are still treated as sex slaves. How many women in Dominica are sc***ed for top up? How comes a woman in a bikini is used to advertise alcohol and other products? The list goes on. @ Minding, you don’t believe in divine scriptures. If you are to post the complete verses you will see that the woman ought to submit to the man’s authority. This is clear defiance to the laws of the Most High. It is due to this foolish feminism there are high divorce rates. There is no order in the society. When this did not exist, the family structure was healthier, now there are more crimes in this country because children are neglected by their parents, this is the root of the problem.

        • hmmmm

the women you talk about do it by choice, they are under no obligation as compared to women in the muslim society

i really don’t need a woman to sing woman time for me to know it’s my time. everymorning for 5 or 6 days, we get up to go to work. This has been so from the time we left school. We take care of our family, we lead community groups, we are doing wonders in education. In fact we are doing so well in education that we been outshining the men for years. some of us take care of the men we are with. And we know all of this> why did we need a song to make us feel good as Woman. Jeez, i don’t get this. If the fuss was over the first song, i would get it, it has more universal appeal. But woman time has none. IT HAS BEEN OUR TIME!!!!!

What a night! What a Competition! What a performance! (Reminiscent of the great Dominican commentator Jeff Charles)

It is the morning after the night before. The dancing and celebrations have been put on a short pause in anticipation of Monday and Tuesday jump up. In the meantime people are beginning to wonder how did Queen Tasha P edge out the four time winner, great King Dice, plus the two time – back to back – reigning King Karessa. For purposes of discussion let us concentrate on these top three, although all the songs were of very high standard. This in no way minimizes the contribution of the other seven contestants. Without a doubt this was the best total contribution in all competition since Trinidadian born The Observer won with his song “Garbage Truck” 1957. In Round One, Tasha P’s “Let the Children be Children” was clearly a cut above the rest. The melody and lyrics were like hand and glove – they fit. Some parents in the crowd were misty eyed. It pulled at the heart strings and had parents at home dancing with their children; the result of a profound song, captivating with its lyrics and intoxicating with its melody. 90 out of 100 points in the first round put Tasha P in good standing against the competition. Karessa’s “Reach” was a close second amassing 88 points and Dice failed to live up to his “Commandments of Calypso” with just an above average melody for an otherwise well penned set of lyrics. However, what he lacked in melody he made up in delivery as only King Dice can and put himself in the mix by gaining 83 of the 100 points.

Now comes the second round. Normally this is the round where we generally see some distance between the sheep and the goats. Interestingly enough, this year was the opposite. The gap at the top began to close. Nevertheless, these same three were able to pull off slightly from the rest of the pack. The best two songs, Dice’s “Send Me” and Tasha P’s “Woman Time” in the second half tied for first place in both melody and lyrics. Some people might chop my head off for saying that. But remember acting assistant superintendent Claude Weekes will have none of that, having vowed zero tolerance for violence during the carnival season. Wait till Ash Wednesday and I will gladly accommodate you … ash cross on my forehead and all.

In any event I stand by my statement and I will continue to explain. These two songs both gained 34 out of 35 points in each of the categories of melody and lyrics. Delivery was superb on both counts, each gaining 9 out of a possible 10 points. It was only in the category of rendition that Dice’s “Send Me” was not able to resonate with the crowd in the same fervor and intensity as Tasha P’s “Woman Time”. She was able to get the edge over Dice, 19 to 18 out of a possible 20 points. As a result Tasha was able to edge Dice 96 to 95 points. Both songs were of equal caliber with great lyrics and equally superb melodies. Karessa’s “Cutlery” although a great song in and of itself was not able to cut it and gave him a close third with 84 points in that round. Melody, rendition and delivery were excellent. “Cutlery” suffered on its lyrics in comparison to “Send Me” and “Woman Time”. And how apropos for “Woman Time” for it will be Mardis Gras this year which falls on March 8, when we will be celebrating International Woman’s Day.

Melody and lyrics make a good song, but rendition and delivery propel a song to greatness. Tasha P dominated the night with two performances that will remain in the minds of calypso lovers for decades to come.

What a night! What a Competition! What a performance!

I agree with alot of what you are saying, but may I please ask that you view the video of Dice’s send me on the night of the finals…He shouted and often was short of words..The aggresiveness in the performacne resonated the crowd but was not good for his clarity and delivery.

Bouquets to Tasha P. Very well deserved in my opinion. Congrats also to the judges, they got it right this time. I also think that the guys who ‘faux-pas’ made it a little easier for them. I really enjoyed the show last night. Big-up to Franklyn Moses, great job. I hope they are not going to increase the price next year. The crowd would even be greater if the show was cheaper. Many persons did not attend because they were disgruntled by the ticket price. Please organisers, do the math for creole festival. Anyways, was great to see the lady in the V.I.P booth enjoying her Peter Pros moment.

With the strides women are making in calypso, I am of the opinion that we only need one Calypso Monarch competition open to both sexes. Nuff said. Hearty congratulations to Tasha for a well deserved win! Keep up the good work. One love.

Congrats and Big-up to Queen Tasha “P”, a most deserving and ultra-talented monarch. Kudos also to Dice for mounting a worthy challenge and to the valiant defending King Karessah whose efforts for 2011 came up short, forcing the judges to put a “fuchette” in it.

first let me say congrates to Tasha. she was great. Dice was at his worse performance in the first round likewise the caressa.secondly dice shouted too much and caressa stage propes and presenters threw him off. they started acting without lights and he sang a line twice that was obvious. Tasha was very consistant in both rounds and that gave her an edge over both kings. its no longer a king but a monarch. go head girl and do your thing.

For once the noise from your dad’s bus will be a very welcome sound.
I would also like to recommend that the government of dominica should honour you with a piece
of land or even better a scholarship to any university of your choice.
A fantastic way of encouraging other potential calypsonians to sing songs about everyday topics that affect us all – without the vulgarity and derogatory comments that usually accompanies our calypsoes.

For the people who think that a woman does not deserve the calypso monarchy, here is my take. Did any body stop the men from competing in the queen show? If they have what it takes, I say let the men compete. Well, in this case, they might have to “NOT HAVE” what it doesn’t take. The swimwear piece might be a challenge..   But if you all want to enter, more power to you all. In the mean time, It’s WOMAN TIME!! Like it or not. Congratulations again to Tarsha P.

    March 6, 2011

I remember last year when she told the judges if a woman can’t wear the calypso crown, they are boys. ‘Twas funny, but true. This year, they was no room for robbery. My girl deserved her crown fair and square. I always knew that crown would be between Tasha P and Dice, but even before the show something told me Dice might get carried away with the crowd on that second song, “Send Me”. Tasha P, congrats to you; I knew this year was gonna be your year. The show was of a really high standard, I have to admit. Dice, Karessah, Sye, Checker, Soul Puss and the other. Even Pros had a good comeback after his unfortunate faux-pas. Looking forward to representation from you, Ms Peltier, on the regional level. Good luck!

    @jacklong

Your Comments: but she can’t sing..u think she has a chance internationally?

    MY RESPONSE TO THAT COMMENT:

    What??????????

You all forgetting that Tasha P and Tarina Simon were the two powerful Dominican representatives in the Digicel Caribbean Song Contest in 2007?

You probably don’t keep up with what goes on in the Arts and Entertainment world so here is some help: Log on to http://www.youtube.com . And when you are there type in swinging stars and click on one of the clips with stars in the USA and see Tasha P singing a Spanish song to an International Audience during Labor Day Celebrations.

When you are through with that check out the Creole Festival clips of Swinging Starts as well and see Tasha P in action on the International Stage of the World Creole Festival in 2009 or 2010.

That is just a sample of the potential that this young lady is dropping down on the world and she has the advantage of youthfulness on her side!!!!

I can already foresee a double carrier or even multiple carriers that this Diva will enjoy. For starts she was already exposed to teaching music to the first form girls of the Convent High School – a very prestigious Girls School in Dominica which celebrated its 153rd anniversary a few weeks ago.

What does that say to you jacklong?

The young lady is been groomed, the young lady is being nurtured, the young lady is charting a strategic path to realize her full potential and she is already ripping success.

Let us all wish her the very best in all her future undertakings.

For the last 30 years I have noticed an interesting trend in Calypso in Dominica:

In 1981 The Tronada became King only once

In 1991 The Wizard was King

In 2001 Daddy Chest was King and has never regained a Calypso Crown to date

In 2011 we now have a woman as Calypso Monarch

I am hoping that in 2012 Tasha P and her team can release a CD with at least four good powerful songs and her previous songs in a remix with improved melody and instrumentation that would fill the gaps that the base and drums dominate.

That CD should come out by December 2011 and Stardom Tent should start the 2012 Carnival Season in December 2011.

With all due respect, tasha p won hands down. In the first round dice had his worse performance in his calypso career. His voice was off key in some instances and he almost caught the stage on fire. Tasha on the other hand must have scored full points In the first round. That was a phenominal performance.

Dice 2nd song was the best delivery he ever had. So he had two extremes. Tasha was also fantastic and was nt far behind dice in dat round. So the judges made a great decision. No bias!!!!

This yrs show was of a low class!! Soul puss repested verses in both songs, peter p crashed before he started, caressa repeated a line but the judges did not realize and lugars sang the second verse twice. Bobb n youngbull should have been dere

I stayed up because with so many beautiful calypso I know it would be a tough time for the judges but they did very well I just dont know what was wrong with the men especially Soul Puss and Peter Pros they had powerful songs that had stronge messages but they went down by their own hands.
Tasha P I congratulate you but the song I prefered was the one about the children you gave us all a warning to take care of our children because from what we see happening with them we needed someone like you to bring the message to the four front so all can identify with it we still dont know what or where is the young girl who have been missing for weeks PARENTS I hope you were listening to TASHA’S warning and so be carefull during this canival season.

WAW!!!! Excellent Show!!! CONGRATULATIONS Tasha P!!!! Very Well deserved Victory. You WHIPPED the men fair and square. You brought your “A+” game. They came with B’s and C’s. Great work, and like one person said, Dice said send him, but you sent them all… packing.

In my humble opinion, I saw it like this:
Best Performace – Karessa in round 2 but his round 1 was mediocre
Best Songs –Soul Puss but he messed up in both rounds
Most OK performance – DICE – I am still not sure why he was screaming and sometimes talking the words in round 2 – Sounded too aggressive for me.
Most Consistent and Sincere – TASHA P- Well done!!

The judging was excellent. Someone mentioned computerized something…well, it worked really well last night!!

I guess we guys have to play it cool this Carnival .. because it’s… WOMAN TIME!!!

Tasha deserved the crown. She out performed us she was really great and all men should be proud of her. This teaches men in calypso that we must go back to the drawing board like bob did.Pat Arron must cool out on the political lyrics and do like Tasha P.The best song for the carnival is Let the children be children.Pat must get lyrics like that insteading of his puppets singing one kind of song every year.If you listen to pat Arong songs all are the same theme. He never menttions the good the government does always the negative. When UWP was in power Pat never wrote anything against them. Now the tide is turning against Pat.Go back to the drawing board and give us balanced calypsos.I wonder how you feeling,A second year youthful female calypso singer came and beat all the kings you made.Am happy the tide changed because i heard Pat on an interview on one of the radio stations critizing Tasha P calypsos.Only Duncan Stowe stood up for Tasha P the two other men we critical because she was not singing about politics.Am male and you made feel proud because us under that women can achive what the want to.Some men must take example on you because of your courage for as young person. Some young men must follow your footsteps. You were great.

Well done Tasha. You have certainly shattered the glass ceiling in calypso. this is no easy feat. enjoy your reign and hopefully in the future it will not be necessary to emphasize that it is a woman who won, but that a talented individual won. hats off.

    WAW!!!! Good Show!!!!

In my humble opinion, the competition was well judged and Tasha P deserved the crown. Best performance for the evening was the Karessa in round two. His first round was mediocre. Soul Puss had the best songs but he messed up in both rounds one and two. Dice was ok, but I don’t know why he was screaming and sometimes just talking the words of his second and more important song. The crown was there for the taking and Tasha P was the most consistent. Excellent judging.

WOMAN TIME!! Give up to Tasha and the the WOMEN of Dominica!!

Way to go Tasha! You have managed to the glass ceiling in Calypso. Many women have tried but you did it. So congrats. Who knows, in the future we will never have to make it a point to emphasize that it is a woman who won and instead say that a talented individual won.

    March 6, 2011

Hey lets put this “Woman Time” in its right perspective ok. Beautiful song, well written, exceptional delivery, she won the crown hands down. However, Ladies, this is not reason to use the song to put problems in your home, when your husband, spouse, or whichever partner tries to communicate your first response is “Woman’s time” :). I can see some evil minded women doing that. Those ignorant men in Dominica if you are not careful will put your butt out on the street if you are sharking up with them :) trust me they not happy with lots of the words in this song because it hitting a nerve, especially if they are control freaks.

Haha we are no longer in the bed waiting to see what they bring, we are no longer going to sit back and accept their mistresses, we are no longer going to be the cooks, the maid, we can now do more for ourselves through our active role in making ourselves marketable through education, its all about equality now, but some of them men don’t like to hear that, so play your cards right ladies ok!

    Wink, Wink :) :)

  99. My Plea!!
    March 6, 2011

Just adding my two sense DNO.

This is my plea or recommendation to help make a request to the Right authorities for Tasha to get a piece of Dominica for her hard work and exceptional performances over the years that has now led to she carrying 3 Titles, Her gift from the Association is $20,000, what is the government chipping in?? :) A Scholarship? a piece of her country? please give her something to encourage her to continue on, an incentive is always a reason to work harder. No she does not deserve Duty Free, still a student and she not ready for a car, car is expense for her at this time. Dice got Land after winning a few years, in one year she has chopped 3, titles she needs something too. Her topics were that of our everyday issues in society I recommend a piece of LAND for Tasha,

Freddos, I saw you as a proud dad on stage, from the back I could see your nose shooting up, If U had to sing to save your life you would have starved, but you are a remarkable entertainer. That’s just my little joke, but your daughter did it for you. Mr. Mally, you are an xtra Proud GrandPa today you can take today off from your normal Taxi Duties to celebrate :), Congratts! To her hard working mom, I say Hats Off to you, Tasha sang that song for you.

The crown could have gone no where else. The judges finally got it right, so congratts to you guys too.

Tasha to young in the business all you want to much you cannot compare Tasha P with Dice Dice will forever remain the peoples King He worked for what he got from calypso and he deserved it so Tasha Congrats and strive to earn what the others got.. people $20000 is alot stop comparing her with others they worked their way to where they are so let her climb the ladder to get to the top this is just the first step… Dice was my king but is woman time and lets all accept that,

      • hmmmmm
        March 7, 2011

Dice did alot to get where he is , yes he got how many crowns in how many years but she created History in Dominica and has represented with dignity, respect and pride…not forgetting being a humble individual. Even before her victory she has been in the fore front and has maintained a good reputation for herself and has represented women. I agree give her something more, being young in the business is even more reason to give her more. She is young in the business and still created history!!!!!!!!!

to all those talking about a queen and queen on parade thats to show you how misinformed most dominicans are. I also blame the organizers for promoting the error. Because the national calypso competition has both men and women competetors the title to the winner is calypso monarch ( monarch stands for both king or queen). what has happened over the years is that for example when karessa, dice, hurricane and all other male won on the night they crown them as monarch but the media, public and others refer to them as king dice or king hurricane etc. But it is really Calypso monarch Brakes or spider or rabbit etc. I hope this shed some light on the discourse. So Tasha P is Calypso Monarch 2011. and yes i know what i am talking about as a past member of the calypso association of long ago.

women have been ruling for a long time. It angers me when I hear all this woman time as if this is a new phenomenom. The feminist movement goes back to the 60;s and 70’s. We had a strong female prime minister in the 80’s who convinced the powerful Ronald Reagan to invade Grenada. Dr. Caressa Etienne has been a medical doctor for over 30 years and works for the PAHO or WHO. The thing is, before strong, successful women were viewed by the Dominican public as lesbians or pathetic. Now, they have woken up and smelled the coffee; that it is always best to have your own career, job and financial security and not depend on men. Well, better late than never.

Women in my mind have been marginalized and stereotyped into roles that have, for too long, been accepted as being the norm. Now, we are seeing women breaking out of that “mold” and taking up nontraditional tasks in every facet of society and doing an excellent job to boot! Well done Tasha-P. You are the Calypso King by virtue of your performance, but moreover a QUEEN for being a role model and inspiration for generations to come! This is in no way to down play the amazing performance of her male counterparts. This is mealy a wake-up call to ALL men out there, that it’s time we start to think “outside the box” if we have not already done that!

congratulations to Tasha P. Dice and My dear Caressa you missed the edge and a we know there is always space for someone else lets take it in good faith.

to my festival committee and writers I wish to suggest that an open discussion need to take place to include the views of those who love calypso but cannot participate in the show because of lyrical content and behaviours. Do you see the posibility in the near future that more envangelizing messages created in this art form. We all need an opportunity to share in this cultural tradition.

Secondly when will we see the parade of the winners be paraded in other streets of Dominca. After all they come from all parts of Dominica come down to Roseau to compete the organizers can at least bring them back home when they won. And dont forget the tens of thousand who come to town as well to ensure the show gets the support it deserves and to be able to pay some of the bill

      Damn Sexist

    • Be informed
      March 6, 2011

Folks, please wake up and smell the coffee. If we are talking Calypso we have to be much more open minded than this.

In Trinidad & Tobago men and women compete for the title of “CALYPSO MONARCH” and there have been several times when a woman has won that title. Monarch (is either male or female) so there is absolutely no need to use the word “KING” here.
Calypso is not only for the males.

The same goes for the title of Socca Monarch. Even here in DA this year a woman won the groovy socca title, so there we go. It’s a unisex title OK!!!

I, for one, am a die hard Dice fan, but fair is fair and this is one time that I can’t complain about who was the winner last night as I was indeed satisfied with the judges decision.

Congratulations Tasha P, job well done. Stay humble and focused too.

    • Conscious
      March 6, 2011

Mwen la, it is a calypso monarch competition not a king competition. Why does having a female queen and female calypso monarch trouble you?

She is the Calypso Monarch and the Calypso Queen. In other territories, including St Kitts, those 2 shows are held annually and it is possible for a woman to win both. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.

Its was so hearts warming and brinings tears to the eye of many on D/ca Grammer School on Friday to see “the Paride” Mathias Bruno (a wheelchair user Student) performing a remix of King Dice remix which won him the crown of 2011DHS Calypso king. Man you should have seen the two when they took the stage as Dice made a guest performance during that show.

In my opinion that’s another history in the making when a differently abled person will hold that calypso crown and that not too far from now.

Tasha, these songs you’ve sang are great social commentaries. They truly touch very sensitive areas in our society, women and children.

You must be exhausted after a long battle. You have made history and given young women and children hope especially those who had no hope.

Congratulations to you Tasha. Your victory comes at a time when women’s day will fall on Carnival Tuesday.

Tasha, you will have many supporters, you have gained many supporters but to those who envy you, pray for them. If you pray for them sincerely in a good way, everytime you reflect, you will feel good inside because you did no one harm.

Enjoy your gain my girl… :-D

Who were at the show ? Men and women of course it was a DA dhow not a sex show thats what we are talking about and were are begining to understand the issue of gender. And dont be carried away by history. This will always be. there was that first women who entered that compition when its was only men so yes that was the one who broke the barrier give her that glory. And now tasha was sent to wear the crown. that takes away nothing from the valuable contribution that the men have been making to the artform.

We are born male or female but we are well able to perform all roles based on our mindset and our ability to perform biologically or interlectually.

    So so be it
So congrates to all who made this show one of class and yes Tasha got the edge. congrats

And oh by the way lets hope that the calypsos of 2012 lyrical contents will begin to portait DA as that posititve man. and that the negative discrption of the female sex that DA is most time chanted to
LETS ENSURE THAT TODAY AND THE REST OF THE SEASON REMAIN CLEAN and all the contestant and fan prepare and participate in the lentern season a reflecting on the life of the one who made all this possible’

I cannot believe that I am reading this comment. I am amazed that in order to be negative one would make a comment like this. Are you serious? Did you not listen to Leandra and Tasha P? Have you ever heard Dice, Soul Puss, Karresah? Did you pick up on the power that Sye sang these songs with? Are you honestly saying that NO ONE demonstrated the talent to sing last night? I do not think you heard the same thing that I heard. I can honestly say, and I did say it, our calypsonians ability to sing is so great now. No one’s voice cracked as you said. And even if they did, after singing like that for weeks, having interviews, everyday talking, allergens like smoke and dust and so on one might crack, but it would only be as a result of overextension of the vocal chords and irritation of the throat, and not singing ability. I am a soprano, and I know what I am talking about. I can honestly say I was impressed. This was a good show, and the talent of our calypsonians is not only obvious, but i dare say, as a group, unprecented. Before we had a few good ones and some not so good ones. Now we have a group of big guns who can make us proud anywhere. What are you talking about? I am very proud of our calypsonians. They were all good, including Propsper who forgot his song in the first round, and was still able to perform in the second round despite his disappointment. He even sounded like he could sing, and I do not hink that he is a natural singer. If you cannot be constructive, at least show respect enough to remain quiet. That might be better appreciated.

    March 6, 2011

How in the world can someone use the hard work and results of our arts – in this case Tasha P winning the Calypso Monarch and relate it to same sex rubbish? Get your dirty minds out of the gutter.
We are so shallow in our thinking it is a sad situation.
Woman Time..is simply stating how important it is for women to embrace their full potential, and show it is possible to achieve every and anything one sets their mind to.
We are too shallow and disgruntled. Long before the show was held many biased Dominicans claimed the crown for their favorite person, without taking time out to wait for the show and to objectively view it
in the eyes of a judge.
Tonight the judges’ decision stands…It is Woman’s time, like it or not. Celebrate the victory of your mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, nenen – who is a woman. Need I say more?
Grow up Dominicans. And support and celebrate the talent for what it is worth.

Tarina came close and then she choked and disappeared on us. Maybe she was sick some years and maybe she chose not to sing other years. She is probably the only other person who could have done this. But alas, Tasha kept fighting and kept pushing and when they told her she couldn’t she did. Ja-Li, Tarina, Yakim, Singing Sandy and all the rest should be proud of her and rally behind her!

The judges finally got it right. I was at the show, and I was very objective. Dice was a crowd favorite, and so the crowd roared for Dice. But there is no way Dice outperformed Tasha P. Dice got carried away, and he tended to shout too much. This was a competition my people. Dice did not perform at the level that I know he can. Tasha P gave a much more powerful performance. The judges finally got it right.

Congratulations Tasha P. You broke through to the next frontier with the right song … Woman Time. We wearing the crown now. The judges only gave you what was yours, so wear it with pride.

    • Conscious
      March 6, 2011

Your analysis is right. Dice overdid it in the second round. Perhaps, he was overconfident and wanted to work the crowd in a frenzy. That was unnecessary since the mere metion of his name is enough to get the crowd excited. He shouted a few times rather than sing the calypso as per normal.

cuz its a male dominated arena… cuz traditionally the men outnumbered and outperformed women.so women needed and arena where they could compete on a leveled playing field…naturally women work twice as hard and now the national competition is no longer to difficult for a woman to outshine the men. so if men now believe that whilst performing with women they are not on a leveled playing field then they can have an all boys competition…woman time

WHAT A SHAME!! Contrary to the arbitrary talk, your crown Tasha was very well deserved.

Continue to be you, the inocense in you continues to help you grow in the right time, do not force or push anything, You rocked me in the park, your performances were of an exceptionally high standard, you camanded the stage and you did well. She is the calypso monarch, not the queen. She competed for calypso monarch and won. You people need to appreciate the use of words and subtle differences.

lol, ok guys thanks for the education. see, i am not a carnival or calypso enthusiast. i always thought that it was about a carnival king and queen. i remember seeing them being paraded (years ago) and had always thought that they were symbolic of the most prestigious positions earned by a male n a female. My bad :)

i am not discrediting the judges or the young lady. like i said earlier, i did not listen to the show.

There is something exceptional that gave her the edge over Dice. I love Dice too. I think the lead judge DNO or some media person could get the information and say what really separated these two. :)

Was fun though!!! She has a voice though one thing I can tell you

I don’t believe even though I am a woman she won fairly.I think the judges went along with crowd pressure and maybe wanted to write some wrong. How could she win over Dice? stuepes. Good thing I didn’t waste my money on this bobol

dice try to hard… that is why tasha won.

      • Kalinago in New York
        March 6, 2011

Dice is too pompous, that’s why. He always thinks he has it in the bag as if his name is written on the crown… I trust that’s why he began applauding in advance coz someone tipped him off beforehand to avoid having him embarass himself in public since for him its the norm to behave like an ar…hole just as he did in NY.

    • Wikileaks
      March 6, 2011

How can you not be at the show and make that statement?

      • CARING wORDS!
        March 6, 2011

@ Wikileaks If he or she did not make that comment they would have been admitted at PMH, how pathetic to read some of those comments. DNO is a place to vent, so the clown had no other option but to post negative.

    • Iye
      March 6, 2011

Why can’t she win over Dice?
Is Dice Some sort of Calypso god?
Many people think that once Dice is in the finals, then the crown is his…….well he will have to come better next year

      • justice
        March 6, 2011

I am a big dice fan myself but u got to admit..not bcuz he come back he had to win. I always say this year he will place but he wont win…was not as strong as other years…..this year is woman time!….and im sure u a woman cant u be proud for the 1st woman calypsonian?

        • lol
          March 6, 2011

that person is right tasha’s songs were lyrically lacking! they were songs for the simpleton any woman could sing the way she did but that doesnt mean based on melody that she won.

        • my 2 cents
          March 6, 2011

If this girl did not win the Judges wouldnt be able to walk on the road..Anyway if She did not win Caresa would have cuz up to now i doh c de dice again thingee…apart from a good voice dice have nothing on This lady and Caresa

    • Gramma police
      March 6, 2011

Simply marvellous, well-deserved. The young lady can sing, she has a great voice and she will go far ( being front person for Stars also helps). Swing Stars was on point last night…excellent back up – after all they are the best band in the world…big up to Stars. Much love to Peter Pros for using his second song as entertainment for the crowd, he could have disappeared in embarassment, but he understood that this is entertainment and he did his thing – great job.
Tasha the best person won, and that was you….enjoy the rest of the season….WOMAN TIME !!!!

    • alas
      March 6, 2011

i agree. I want to know where the difference is. I may have been satisfied with a tie. Cause it looked like that to me. the Punch line i think won the crown “woman time” and the shows and tent were highly female biased( more females attending). I would in the future like them to give the total points. And i am wondering as well, whether there is a rubric. Lets say melody 35, in that 35 what are you looking for? lyrics 35..what are you looking for? I think that would help the audience better.
